Re-Sign or Release: Mike Brown

Mike Brown, Cleveland Cavaliers

With the NBA season in the rear view mirror, we now turn to a summer full of front office decision-making. As fans, we all have our feelings on what needs to be done to improve our Cavaliers team. Rock has laid the figurative cards on the table, but this is where we turn to you – the readers of WFNY.

The premise is simple. Assume all players are restricted free agents and that they’ll likely need at least a small raise from last year’s salary. Do you re-sign? Or do you release? Of course, we’ll leave LeBron James out of this scenario.  And also, a little supporting argument always helps.  Do Enjoy.

It’s getting to the point where you all are wielding more axes than the banking industry.  D-West and Boobie got invites back to participate next season.  The team then followed suit.  But since then, we have been releasing players left and right.

While we could attempt to delve into Ben Wallace, I have a feeling I know the result.  Zydrunas Ilgauskas would be a solid conversation, but we’ll save that for later.  For now, let’s change things up a bit and discuss the man behind the curtain: Mike Brown.

WFNY Readers Have Spoken…

Delonte West, Daniel Gibson

…At least figuratively.

As you know, we’ve been running the “Re-sign or Release” feature here over the past few weeks.  Starting with the backcourt, the only two players that have garnered a majority of “Re-Sign” votes are Delonte West and Daniel Gibson.  Well, you guys are two-for-two.

Per Mary Schmitt Boyer:

The Cavaliers have made qualifying offers to Daniel Gibson for $972,581 and Delonte West for $2.76 million, meaning they will become restricted free agents on July 1, and the Cavs will have the right to match any offers they receive from other teams. [Read more...]

I’m getting the sense that you guys simply do not appreciate any player on this Cavaliers team.  We started off strong in this exercise, saying that we’d love to bring back Delonte West and Daniel Gibson.  Since then, the “Tribe” has given the axe to Devin Brown, Sasha Pavlovic and Damon Jones.  Someone has to play here, right?

So, we’re going to mix it up a bit.  Straying from the backcourt, we’ll take on a guy that everyone seems to love – at least judged by fan reaction upon entering the court – yet a guy that everyone is willing to deal this off-season.  Anderson Varejao, you’re on the WFNY hot seat.

Thanks to the overwhelming vote of sending Sasha Pavlovic on his way, all of you GMs out there seem pretty comfortable with a backcourt of Delonte West and Daniel Gibson for next season.  But if we’re releasing Pavlovic and Devin Brown, who does this leave off of the bench?

Enter Damon Jones.  While he’s become more of a celebrity than a “player” on this team, is it his fault?  Jones has obviously fallen out of favor with the decision-makers, evidenced by his lack of playing time during the entire post season.

Three guards up, three guards down.  The Tribe has spoken regarding Delonte West, Daniel Gibson and Devin Brown.  We’re going to deviate from the “D’s” a bit today and take on another guard in Sasha Pavlovic.

With Delonte West and Daniel Gibson already discussed, we continue with the backcourt.  But while West and Gibson were logging minutes – at least until Gibson’s injury – one Devin Brown was not.

Rumors are circulating that Brown had missed (or shown up late) to a team practice during the post-season, thus landing in Mike Brown’s doghouse.  Whether or not the playoff-long punishment was justifiable or not can be discussed at another time.  For now, the only question is: Should Devin Brown be a member of the 2008-09 Cavaliers team?

Welcome back, friends, to the show that never ends…

While we touched on a few issues regarding Delonte West about this time last week, we now turn our attention to another guard.  But unlike West, this one started off promising, and seemed to have faded back a bit towards the end of the season.  Granted, injuries played a large part in his regression, but I’m willing to bet that there is a large contingency of Cavs fans that were disappointed with what they got out of their would-be star two-guard this season.

We’ll start this series off with the backcourt.  West seems to have won a few fans over with his play over the final stretch with clutch shots and decent defense, but is it enough to garner him the title of “point guard of the future?”
