WFNY Podcast – 2012-10-20 – Talking Colts with a Colts fan

When you write sports at a website like WFNY for a while you get to know your own kinds of fans. As many of you know my house is divided from a football perspective because my wife grew up in Indianapolis. I spared you my wife being on the podcast, but my brother-in-law is very much a similar kind of football fan to what I think we cater to at WFNY, so I talked to him for about ten minutes about the matchup and what it’s like to be a Colts fan on the heels of Peyton Manning and with Andrew Luck at the helm today.

  • How do Colts fans currently feel about Peyton Manning?
  • How much easier did Andrew Luck and the draft make Manning’s departure?
  • Are there any Colts fans that support the team losing this year?
  • Can the Colts actually make the playoffs?
  • What are the risks for the Colts with this Browns matchup?

NFL News: Fujita, Patterson and Pinkston out vs. Colts

The Friday injury report is out concerning the Browns game this Sunday versus the Colts. No big surprises as Scott Fujita, Dimitri Patterson and Jason Pinkston are all listed as out.

Important questionable players include Trent Richardson, Mohamed Massaquoi, Travis Benjamin and Ahtyba Rubin.

Certainly looks like the Browns have the advantage in the injury report. The Colts officially won’t have Robert Mathis or Donald Brown. Dwight Freeney practiced fully.

Of course the big news out of all this is the scary blood clot that hospitalized Jason Pinkston. It is reportedly in his lung. Anyone who has dealt with blood clots – or embolisms as they’re called if they form in one part of the body and travel to another – will tell you just how scary they can be.

Andy Dalton Gets Banged Up Against Colts

From the important AFC North injury chronicles, Pat Shurmur is nodding his head approvingly that he didn’t put Brandon Weeden on the field last night. Bengals second-year starter Andy Dalton got sandwiched by a couple of Colts and trainers were attending to his elbow.

He got up after being struck by Colts linebacker Robert Mathis. Moving slowly, Dalton flexed his fingers. Later, he was sitting on the turf near the Bengals’ bench, with trainers attending to him.

The announcers explained after a commercial break that trainers were checking Dalton’s elbow. He currently is one the sidelines, and he seems to be OK.

And good for Dalton. I am not one to cheer for injuries even in a brutal sport like the NFL. 1 As has been a topic of conversation for the past week, it is a bit of a “damned if you do, damned if you don’t” decision on who to play and how much they should play in the 4th preseason game.

Surely nobody will be upset with Shurmur for playing James-Michael Johnson, a rookie who suffered an oblique injury last night in the Browns’ 28-20 loss to Chicago.

NFL Free Agency: Colts’ Robert Mathis might hit the open market

According to PFT the talks between Robert Mathis and the Indianapolis Colts aren’t going anywhere. In fact, they might not be going hardly at all. Mathis is one of the most talented defensive players that could hit free agency this season and is probably second among defensive ends only to Mario Williams in Houston. Mathis will be seeking a big pay-day and at age 31 he doesn’t fit the Browns’ stated free agency goals at least as of last year when they targeted younger players.

The situation in Indy is complicated too, as they figure out what they are doing with Peyton Manning, let alone free agent Reggie Wayne.

Complicating matters in Indy is that Chuck Pagano has a history of running 3-4 defenses while Mathis has only played defensive end in a 4-3 front. He might be athletic enough to make a switch, but how much money are the Colts really willing to risk on that?

So we’ll see if Mathis actually makes it to free agency and if the Browns are willing to go a little older and sign a 31 year-old to start opposite Jabaal Sheard next season.

NFL Free Agents: Defensive Ends

League-wide free agency begins March 13th. The Browns have stated all along they prefer to build the team through the draft, but will take a look at the players available in free agency. Previously we looked at the receivers available. Then a glance at the linebackers. Next, we stared longingly at offensive tackles before finishing last week with quarterbacks. Today, we look at the pass rush specialists on the d-line.

Last year the Browns sought to improve their struggling defensive line through the draft, selecting DT Phil Taylor and DE Jabaal Sheard. Both players were starters from week 1 and lived up to their draft status. Combined with Ahtyba Rubin, the Browns have three-fourths of a great defensive line in place. The Browns were disappointed in DE Jayme Mitchell, and are expected to replace him.

It is entirely possible that they do that through the draft, but could use free agency to fill the spot as well. There are plenty of candidates.

Gary Bracket Ruled Out for Colts Against the Browns

Obviously when you have a quarterback of the stature of Peyton Manning, his inability to play will dominate the headlines.  The Colts got crushed in their first opportunity to play with Kerry Collins under center in a divisional matchup with the Texans last week.  Don’t think for a second that as the Browns attempt to fill multiple vacancies due to injury that the Colts aren’t also trying to do the same.

Last year when Scott Fujita went down for the Browns it was pretty noticeable that the Browns’ field general was absent as well.  The Colts face the same thing this week as their talented linebacker and captain Gary Bracket is nursing some kind of shoulder injury.  His status for this week has been downgraded to out according to the Indianapolis Star.  Bracket’s backup is… ummm… hmm.  According to the depth chart on the Colts’ webpage on NFL.com the backup for Gary Bracket is nobody.
