I’ve Finally Forgiven Jim Thome

As Jim Thome is on the precipice of hitting 600 home runs I have finally come to the realization that I am not angry with him anymore.  I know I am one of the later holdouts amongst Tribe fans.  I am also well aware that nobody was really waiting with baited breath for me to come to this conclusion.  It just occurred to me for all the negativity I had regarding Jim Thome and him leaving Cleveland for Philly following the 2002 season, I am no longer feeling angry.

Yes, we’ll always have the infamous quote, “my wife is my rock…”  We can always make the argument that Jim Thome chased the last dollar.  Many will argue that the Indians offered just enough money to make it look good and guarantee that Thome would leave while still allowing the Indians to defend themselves.  We might never know if that was truly the case or not.  What we do know is that Thome left for a prospectively better situation for more money. While We’re Waiting… Varejao’s Wrist Injury, Clemens’ Debut, and Saying Goodbye to Eric Snow

The voodoo that you do: ”Perhaps someone with the power somewhere put a hex on Cavaliers’ right wrists this season.  Darnell Jackson broke his in the preseason. Delonte West broke his in January. And now Anderson Varejao, who had a perfect attendance record, is being bothered by his, too. [...] X-rays taken at the arena showed no break and there’s a chance he’ll have an MRI on Monday, but the team generally believes it is not serious.” [Brian Windhorst/Plain Dealer]

Are You Still Shocked? Really?

A Rod Smoking SteroidsYesterday when the A-Rod steroid story broke, my immediate response was surprise.  That lasted a second and then it occurred to me.  I am not shocked by any of these stories anymore.  In fact, I don’t know why anyone would be.  I guess I would be shocked if I found out that Jamey Carroll was juicing.  Or maybe, I might be surprised if I found out that Sal Fasano was slamming back doses of HGH.  But the shock of some elite level player having gained an edge chemically is non-existent at this point.  I think it is time to be honest with ourselves.

Now this isn’t to say that it isn’t wrong.  It most certainly is.  But that, in and of itself doesn’t have to drive our reactions.  We have already gone through phases of realizing that the game of baseball doesn’t have a crystal clean background.  How much more realization can we go through than having Rafael Palmeiro’s fake denial?  We already saw a balding, slightly less bigger Mac sitting in front of legislators avoiding questions about the past.  And this was way before his scummy brother decided to shop a tell-all book about how he introduced his brother Mark to the methods of juicing.

Then last year, we acted shocked again when the revelations about Andy Pettite and Roger Clemens came out.  I think this was mostly because Clemens was the highest profile pitcher to engage in a practice that had been thought to be reserved for homerun obsessed power dudes who wanted to grind bats into splinters with their hands. 28-funny-warning.jpg

It’s been a busy week here at WaitingForNextYear, highlighted by Derek Anderson’s egg-laying, Larry Hughes’ big performances, Rock taking a national columnist down a notch, Sarge discussing Brady Quinn’s alleged comments, and a pretty long discussion about the future of C.C. Sabathia.

While we’re on the topic of Sabathia, here’s what Clevelanders are saying about #52-

According to the PD, Mark Shapiro has no intention of trading the Tribe ace.

Just because C.C. Sabathia doesn’t want to talk contract until the end of the season doesn’t mean the Indians are any more interested in trading last year’s American League Cy Young winner than they were a week ago. “Our priority is to win now,” said GM Mark Shapiro on Thursday as spring training officially opened with pitchers and catchers reporting to camp.

A Rooting Interest

bill-simmons.jpegFor several years I have cared less about who wins the Super Bowl. The game for me was more of a chance to get together with friends or unfortunately to work. This year I again don’t care for either of the teams in the game, but my hatred for Boston sports is reaching new heights. Actually I think I have more of a problem with the typical Bah-stun fan than any of the teams or players. So when I read got my January 28th edition of ESPN the Magazine, I nearly choked on my own vomit.

Everyone’s favorite national sports writer Boston homer Bill Simmons was in rare form. I was curious how Simmons would respond to Clemens’ HGH use err, allegations. I figured high fives were coming, perhaps a few witty retorts and a Real World reference was in my future. What I got was nothing short of an indictment of the typical Boston fan. [Read more...]
