The Week That Was

This Week: 2-1-0, 4 points
Overall: 31-24-6, 68 points (4th division; 12th conference)

Just like last week… Columbus continues to play well, BUT they can’t move up in the standings. However, the Jackets have played the fewest games in the conference, meaning they have a chance to make up points on the teams in front of them. BUT, they also play 16 times in 31 days in the month of March, or the same number of games they played in 31 days in December. And, we all remember how that turned out. The Jackets are in the midst of a huge road trip, and GM Scott Howson made a move yesterday to try to give the teama little extra push for the final 21 games.

Jackets Plagued By Bad Bounces and Ineffective Power Play as Coyotes Sneak Out 4-3 Winners

The biggest question going into this game for me was: which Jackets team would we see? Would it be the team that’s moved their feet, worked hard, and beaten some quality teams, or would we see the team that faces some adversity and folds up shop? Certainly helping to clarify matters was the fact that the Coyotes were on the second night of a back to back, and looked the part early on. But, it was the ineffectiveness of the Columbus Power Play coupled with a fluky bounce into the Jacket net that sent them to a fifth straight defeat, 4-3 to the Phoenix Coyotes.

As bad as the Jackets looked on Friday night—and have looked in four of their six losses on the season—the silver lining is that going into last night’s tilt at the Staples Center they had not lost two in a row on the season. That streak was put to the test, as the Kings had not lost at home in eight games at Staples (8-0-0) and possessed a perfect Penalty Killing record (31-for-31) on home ice. Not an encouraging sign for a Jackets team that sits last in the league on the man advantage.

Much like the Avalanche who have dismantled the Jackets twice on the young season, the Kings are a hard- and fast-skating team who basically owned the Jackets most of last season, including a combined 12-2 goals advantage in LA. Sounds like the end of the Jackets’ “not lost two in a row” streak, right? Think again.

The Jackets are smarting after getting smoked 7-3 by Dallas on Saturday on their home ice. They need to come out tonight and re-establish home ice dominance against the last-place team in the conference. St. Louis also played last night in Detroit (losing 4-3), so Columbus should have the energy/jump edge as well. It looks like the Jackets will welcome back defenseman Rostislav Klesla, as well, which should help on defense (though his overall energy level and ice time are still up in the air, depending on how well-conditioned he is). Steve Mason (battling mononucleosis) will make his 19th consecutive start in goal, as well. [Read more...]

Week: 1-1-1, 3 points
Overall: 14-15-4, 32 points (4th division; 12th conference)

The Jackets’ one win this week was well-documented here, but unfortunately the rest of the week went downhill. After outlasting the Sharks at home in what could have been the season-changing win, the air came out of the baloon pretty quickly and in gut-wrenching fashion. [Read more...]

I’m worn out. Let’s make it short and sweet this week. It is clear on Election Day that the Jackets have ELECTED to attempt to play better hockey (see what I did there? I’m funny!), yet they are still finding ways to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory. We highlighted their very nice win in Colorado last Thursday. They played well enough to win the other two games they had this past week, but in true fashion managed to have unfortunate lapses at the wrong time, losing each in overtime/shootout fashion. Before we look back at last week, it is important that we look forward as we’ve finally (FINALLY!) gotten to the point in the season where actual news happens, and actual action is taking place. Tonight is the first exhibition game of the 2008-2009 season for the Blue Jackets. They will be in Chicago playing the Blackhawks tonight at 8:30 EDT, followed by another game tomorrow night in Minnesota. This is the first look at the new-look Jackets. Check the “Up Next” section below to see their full pre-season schedule.
