Box Score: Cavaliers 89, Clippers 105

“I think we saw one of the most underrated, unsung teams in the NBA tonight.”

That was the comment from FOX Sports Ohio’s Jeff Phelps after the Cavaliers’ tough 105-89 loss to the Los Angeles Clippers tonight. Head coach Byron Scott certainly was not as eloquent or long-winded after the contest, which snapped an 10-game losing streak by the Clippers (43-18) at Quicken Loans Arena.

After a hot burst from Dion Waiters in the mid-third quarter brought the Cavs (20-39) within three at 62-59, it was all Clippers from there. And, there even were some decent moments from former Clevelander Ryan Hollins (while it was mostly the Jamal Crawford show). But it was a tough final 17:48 for Cavs fans.

Overall, like the ckise Heat game last week but certainly not as dramatic, it’s hard to take away too many negatives from this loss. This was the 5th game in 7 days for an improving yet still very young Cavaliers team. This is a tough stretch in the schedule — even if they’re lucky to at least have five straight at home, through next Friday, March 8.

All one can hope is that the late-game collapse doesn’t become a typical trend and that the team can remain competitive against closer opponents. The Clippers, although still maybe underrated on the national radar despite ironically being in LA, remain one of the five best teams in the league. The Cavs, on a good day, on leaning toward mediocrity. They’re just going to lose these games, for now, more often than not — especially with Kyrie Irving still being out.

While We’re Waiting … Tribe Opening Day, Expected Value of Tanking, Post-Hollins Struggles

While We’re Waiting serves as the early morning gathering of WFNY-esque information for your viewing pleasure. Have something you think we should see? Send it to our tips email at tips@waitingfornextyear.com.

The DiaTribe features its annual player/song matches to get folks psyched for today’s opener: “[T]o lighten the mood before Game #1 – the annual suggestion of music to accompany each Indians’ player to the plate or to the mound. After an off-season of conjecture, a Spring Training of dissection, and before a season of heavy lifting, this little exercise in frivolity always serves to break up the tension and perhaps provide a little bit of “firing up” to those in need.” [Paul Cousineau/The DiaTribe]

NBA News: Ryan Hollins to Sign with Boston Celtics

This past Tuesday, a source close to Ryan Hollins told WFNY that the recently released center would “have a new home” after clearing waivers. Two days later, Hollins has in fact cleared waivers — no team wanted to be on the hook for the remainder of his $3 million player option — and it appears that a new home is indeed on the horizon.

Sherrod Blakely of CSN New England reports that a deal between Hollins and the Boston Celtics could be consumated as early as this evening with the player being available on Friday evening when Boston plays the Philadelphia 76ers.

Celtics stalwarts Paul Pierce and Kevin Garnett had the opportunity to play alongside Hollins this past offseason and reportedly feel that the 7-footer would fit in nicely within Boston’s system.

Hollins and the Cavaliers decided to split, amicably, after the center was all but completely removed from the team’s rotation to allow rookie Tristan Thompson some additional playing time. Through 24 games, in what was mostly reserve minutes for the Cavs, Hollins averaged 3.7 points and 2.3 rebounds.

The Cavaliers’ roster still stands at 14. It is expected that the team will sign either another D-League prospect or a recently released, post-trade deadline casualty.

Introducing the Inaugural WFNY Cleveland Sports Awards

We’re calling them the Woofnies. Quick back-story. My daughter (5 years old at the time) jumps in my lap as I’m writing one evening. She takes a look at the site logo and says “Dad what’s woofnie?” Apparently that’s how you pronounce WFNY.

Each day we will present one Woofnie chosen by the staff here at WFNY, and introduce an award category for you to vote on. The comment section, as always is for you to defend your selection, tell us why we’re brilliant with our selection, or I suppose argue why we got it wrong (not that we ever get things wrong). The awards are for June ’10- June ’11. And here we go!

The first WFNY Cleveland Sports Award is the civic pride award. [Read more...]

Re-Sign or Release: Ryan Hollins

Back in May, 2008, we featured a little series called “Re-Sign or Release” where we went through every player on the Cavaliers roster and turned to the readers to see what they would do if they were the general manager of the Wine and Gold and – hypothetically, of course – all of the players were up to have their respective contracts renewed.

Same hypothetical this time around: We’re looking to build for the future; all players are restricted free agents, likely requiring a bit of a pay raise from last season.  Do you re-sign them? Andrew has already laid out the roadblocks currently facing the Cavaliers in 2011; now it’s your turn. Vote below and leave your support in the comments.

Yep…sure didn’t see too many of those jerseys in the crowd this season…

Cavaliers Season Ends with Many Important Lessons

Last night, Joe Tait fittingly put an end to an era.  I am not happy to see him go, but watching and listening to him end his career last night just seemed fitting.  I didn’t cry, but I didn’t dare say anything either with a lump in my throat the size of a grapefruit.  There never is a good time to say goodbye to those you love.  That goes for Joe Tait and the rest of the Cavaliers even as we all partook in one of the most difficult seasons in Cleveland Cavaliers history.  As Tait signed off for the last time, I couldn’t help but feel a sense of relief as this season leaves me with a multitude of feelings.  I feel tougher, smarter, hopeful and resilient to name a few.

The Cavaliers were schizophrenic in this season of change.  They embarrassed themselves and their fans on December 2nd in their first meeting against the Miami Heat.  They embarrassed us further with a 26 game losing streak.  In that stretch from November 30th  to February 11th when the Cavaliers finally beat the Clippers in overtime, the Cavaliers lost 36 out of 37 games.  One of those games was a 55-point defeat at the hands of the Los Angeles Lakers.  I could go on and on, but the fact remains that this season could have been the most miserable season ever.  Somehow it wasn’t though. Hollins Incited Villanueva Like a Little Brother

Growing up in the suburbs playing neighborhood sports there were a fair amount of fights. When you are playing competitive running bases, occasionally a fielder is invariably going to apply a tag a bit too hard, too late, or on someone’s face as they dive headfirst. Obviously that isn’t even to mention football. Worse yet, there was kickball when a sprint down the first base line would turn into a game of dodgeball where the runner would be out if you pegged him from across the diamond. Competitive juices were flowing and you just knew that occasionally the powder keg would blow. Normally not quite to the level that it exploded last night in Detroit with Charlie Villanueva and Ryan Hollins during the Cavs’ 110-101 victory.

Everyone will want to talk about Villanueva because he appeared to be the crazy one having to be wrestled out of the arena. He charged across the court long after everything seemed to be settling down which emits a certain air of pre-meditated psychosis.  He reportedly followed that up with his long-lasting rage that led him to want to get at Ryan Hollins deep in the bowels of the Palace after both players were sent to their respective locker rooms.  Many will want to judge Villanueva, but  I’ll tell you.  I’ve been there. What Baron Davis Has Meant to the Cavs’ Frontcourt

Editor’s Note: Craig will be coming up shortly with what last night’s Cavaliers win means in the grand scheme of all things crystal ball.  For now, even more from me regarding the Baron Davis Effect.

In late February, Cavaliers general manager Chris Grant pulled the trigger on a deal that had the entire basketball world talking.  Mo Williams, who was to be the Scottie Pippen to LeBron James, was sent packing to the City of Angels for the well-traveled and well-documented Baron Davis.

Earning the reputation of a malcontent at nearly every stop of the way, Davis allegedly signaled the end for what was the Cavaliers’ potential rebuilding process.  He would tarnish the locker room, one rife with rookie and other considerably young talent.  He and Byron Scott would ultimately go to blows once again despite declarations to the contrary.  How could the addition of a 30-year-old point guard with wonky knees and a terrible contract possibly help a team that desperately needs to improve?

For now, ignore the age, ignore the knees, back, and personal issues and focus on the position.  Baron Davis is a point guard.  [Read more...]

Cavs Win As LeBron Skips Intros

Dan Gilbert’s prayers were answered tonight.  The Cavs came out with the hard-nosed intensity that was lacking on December 2nd.  Ryan Hollins played out of his mind and even almost scrapped with Dwyane Wade. Baron Davis acted as closer. Anthony Parker bombed. Alonzo Gee blocked a wade jumper and played above the rim.  We will have much more on this game tomorrow, but sleep well Cavs fans.  Cavs beat the Heat 102-90!

Oh, and here is a video of LeBron skipping player intros.  Weird.

Ryan Hollins is Your Starting Center

After a few days of hinting towards potential linuep changes, Cavaliers head coach Byron Scott has decided to start oft-reserve center Ryan Hollins tonight as the Wine and Gold host the New Jersey Nets.

The move to start Hollins has several folds, per Scott.  The Cavaliers have lost eight of their past 10 games and are (once again) in need of a shake-up.  However, with the Nets rostering one of the NBA’s rare “true” centers in Brook Lopez, Scott felt that starting the team’s lone, healthy seven-footer would be of benefit.

The move will slide JJ Hickson back to his true position at power forward and will allow the team to bring Samardo Samuels off of the bench (perhaps also his true position) as the first reserve big man.  This change comes just three days after Scott told the media that Hickson and Samuels would remains center and power forward, respectively, for the duration of the season.

Boykins Blasts Cavs Once Again

On the 2010-11 season, Cleveland native Earl Boykins is averaging 8.3 points per game on 45 percent shooting for the Milwaukee Bucks.  When Boykins faces the Cavaliers, the 5-foot-5-inch guard steps up his game, averaging 13.5 points on 70.6 (yes, 70.6) percent shooting.

Of all the teams Boykins has face at least twice this season, only the Los Angeles Lakers have seen the veteran produce better scoring totals.  But in last night’s 110-90 loss to the Bucks, the former Cavalier did his old team dirty by shooting 8-for-9 from the floor, tallying 18 points – all in the first half.

Boykins was a perfet 6-of-6 from the floor in the second quarter, leading the Bucks on a 30-10 run that would prove to be insurmountable by his Wine and Gold-clad opponents who have now lost five of their last six games.

Ramon Sessions and Baron Davis: A Changing of the Guard?

As Baron Davis finishes addressing the media and chatting it up with various Cleveland Cavalier employees, he slaps on his over-sized eyewear and extends his left arm towards Ramon Sessions’ locker.

“Good game, Sesh,” Davis says as the two bump fists and the veteran guard proceeds to take on the rest of his night.

Though Sessions’ obliged his teammates’ show of camaraderie, the fact of the matter is that he has not been the same player since Davis arrived in Cleveland earlier this month.  [Read more...]

Chuck Hayes Just Pulled Down Another Rebound

Editor’s note: Hey, Mo Williams was traded! Feel free to discuss this topic over here or wait for Andrew’s upcoming analysis.  This post, however, is about last night’s game.  Do enjoy.

It has become a bit of an inside joke within the media that, following a Cavaliers loss, Antawn Jamison is the “‘Twan-man Show.”

Taking the role of Papa Bear, Jamison is the veteran who takes the time to given his take on the last 48 minutes of play, discusses the faults and sheds light on what the team needs to do to get better. Sure, a lot of it may be rhetoric and redundant, but when a team loses approximately nine of every 10 games, what else can be expected?

Well, following the Cavaliers 124-119 loss to the Houston Rockets, the media circle of cameras and voice recorders was on the familiar far wall of the locker room, the same one where one LeBron James would command the entire room for 10-15 minutes of postgame questioning.  But this time, said circle was around none other than…

Previewing Cleveland’s Second Half Schedule

The All-Star Weekend has been nothing special for Cleveland Cavaliers fans thus far, so let’s take a look at what’s left in the 2010-2011 season.

Currently owning the NBA’s worst record at 10-46 at the break, the Cavs will hope to utilize several upcoming home games to gain some optimism heading into the offseason. After winning two of three games this past week, the team plays at the Quicken Loans Arena for six of its next seven contests beginning Wednesday, Feb. 23.

Only six more wins are necessary this season to avoid tying both the 1970-1971 inaugural roster and 1981-1982 squad for the worst record in franchise history. It’d also be nice to crack the 17 victory mark set just seven years ago as well, so let’s see what’s left on the table for Cleveland:

Thursday, Feb. 24 – The NBA trading deadline is coming up shortly, and much could be changed around the league by next Thursday. [Read more...]

Cavaliers Preview Game #47: Cavs at Magic

Cleveland Cavaliers (8-38) vs.
Orlando Magic (30-17)
Amway Center, Orlando, Fla.
Sunday, January 30, 2011
7 p.m. EST, FSOH/WTAM

The Cavaliers are 1-29 in their last 30 games, and despite those sad results, are forced to face the Orlando Magic and Miami Heat on the road for their next two games. There were some points of improvement in the team’s latest loss to the Denver Nuggets Friday night, but maybe not enough to compete for 48 minutes against two of the Eastern Conference’s best teams.

Dwight Howard presented serious matchup problems for Cleveland last year, even with two future Hall of Famers and a former All-Star Lithuanian on roster. This will be the case again tonight against new center Ryan Hollins, but hopefully fans can look forward to continued production from Ramon Sessions and Antawn Jamison offensively.

Losing Streak Hits 17 as Cavs Let One Slip Away to Nets

With 1.4 seconds remaining on the clock, Daniel Gibson ran off of a screen and was open in the near-side corner.  Teammate Joey Graham hit him with the pass, Gibson squared, released and watched.

In what could have been slow motion, the ball rotated perfectly, was in line, but caught just enough of the back of the rim and bounced out.  The end result was a New Jersey Nets win, 103-101, and the Cavalier’s 17th straight loss.

“I had the range,” said Gibson. “When I let it go, I thought it was good. I really thought it was good. It caught a little bit of the back rim.”

Following the miss, Gibson crumbled to the floor and sat with his head on his wrists, both resting on his knees.  The purveyor of many past three-point conversions (10th in the NBA in threes made, seventh in three-point percentage), Gibson said that all he could think about was how making that shot would have brought smiles to the faces of his teammates and the fans back in Cleveland.  [Read more...]

Byron Scott Says Certain Players Still Lost on Offense

The Cavaliers are 41 games into the regular season and there are still players who do not understand the team’s offensive schemes.

As amazing as that sounds, Byron Scott says that there are members of his team that still do not grasp what needs to be done on the offensive end.  With Wednesday night’s game within reach, Scott says that the inability to execute in crunch time led to the eight-point defeat.

“We still have guys who don’t understand what we’re doing offensively,” said Scott. “Like I told them today, there’s no reason why that should be because most of these guys have been here all year long, so they should understand what we’re doing at all times.”

On Anderson Varejao’s Injury and What Exists Ahead for Cavaliers

Practices are typically a time of rest for Cleveland’s Anderson Varejao.

Earning the most playing time in his career to this point in the 2010-11 season, a team-high 32.1 minutes per game entering Sunday night, Cavaliers head coach has been taking it easy on his starting center when the team takes to the practice floor at the Cleveland Clinic Courts.  But as their luck would have it, in what is slowly becoming a season to forget, Varejao would fall victim to a foot injury while running a non-contact drill during Thursday’s practice. Mo and Andy Continue Rehab, Questionable for Tuesday

The Cavaliers have been forced to play two games without starters Mo Williams and Anderon Varejao.  In said games, the Wine and Gold are 0-2, losing by an average of 17 points and have suffered on the glass, pulling down 14 fewer rebounds than their opponents.

With the Philadelphia 76ers coming to town, and the Cavaliers looking to get off of the schneid at home (currently 1-4 in the confines of Quicken Loans Arena), they could once again be without two key parts as both players are listed as questionable for the game.

Varejao (ribs) and Williams (groin) were both injured in Wednesday night’s loss to the New Jersey Nets.  While Varejao would return, fitted with additional protection for his chest, Williams would not and seemed destined to miss several weeks with a similar injury he had sustained a month prior.  [Read more...]

Raptors Deliver Harsh Dose of Reality to Cavaliers, Cleveland Fans

It’s an entirely new feeling for Cleveland basketball fans. Overjoyed by the team’s surprise victory Wednesday night over the Boston Celtics, the Cavalier faithful fell right back down following a 101-81 loss to the Toronto Raptors Friday night.

In the start of what could be many painful games on the road, Toronto conquered the helpless Cavs in nearly every single facet of the game. Most notably, the absence of both Mo Williams and Anderson Varejao left Cleveland without two of their top starters and most consistent performers. Filling in Mo’s spot, new point guard Ramon Sessions struggled to consistently set up the offense, and although the Raptors are also projected to be one of the worst team’s in the Eastern Conference, they easily took advantage in front of the home court advantage.
