Yup, I’ve been drinking a lot of the Jeremy Lamb Kool-Aid lately. This is just another explanation of why: “4. Jeremy Lamb, University of Connecticut – This will put me in the minority, I think, but I believe Lamb would be a fine selection at 4. It is easy to forget how good Richard Hamilton was, but Lamb really has his potential, with the frame to support more muscle than Rip ever did. He shoots midrange lights out, is a fine long distance shooter, can create a bit of his own offense but uses off-ball screens better than most his age. Without Lamb, there is absolutely no way UCONN would have won a national championship in 2011. He was able to feed off a shoot first point guard and get his own opportunities and make the most of them. I believe with Kyrie Irving, its a perfect fit.” [David Zavac/Fear The Sword]

Backup plans for the Browns’ offensive leader: “Running back Peyton Hillis missed practice for the third straight day Friday with sore ribs and is listed as questionable for Sunday against the Steelers and their No. 1-ranked run defense. ’I'm still optimistic he’ll be able to play,’ said coach Eric Mangini. ‘I feel pretty good about it, but we’ll see.’ If Hillis is limited during the game, the Browns will rely on Mike Bell and also use Joshua Cribbs in the backfield, both in the wildcat formation and maybe in the regular offense.” [Mary Kay Cabot/Plain Dealer] [Read more...]

What David Veikune should have been? ”The Browns have been looking for a pass rusher and maybe Marcus Benard is going to fill the bill. Benard got to the quarterback twice and was credited with 1.5 sacks last Sunday against Tampa Bay. Benard started at outside linebacker and had three tackles, including one tackle for a loss and two quarterback hurries.

He combined with Scott Fujita for a sack and then had a solo later in the game. Benard has only played in seven NFL games and he has five sacks, including 3.5 in the final six games of 2009.” [Fred Greetham/The OBR]

The X-Factor? “The rivalry with the Celts is full-blown now. It’s got all the physical intensity of past tête-à-tête with the Wizards, without all the rap disses and extraneous shenanigans. The catalyst for that may be LeBron vs. Paul Pierce, but as the last game showed, the trench war will be just as important as the air assault. Big Ben and Z and Varejao and Smith vs. Perkins and Powe and Davis and Moore. Just glad that guy with the crazy hair’s on our side.” [Vince Grzegorek/Scene Magazine]

About the Buckeyes Draft Class

The year 2008 saw the Ohio State Buckeyes take the field with top recruit Terrelle Pryor.  His presence may have made recruits for this year shy away from Columbus.  And the Buckeyes may have gotten some bad news on signing day with Marlon Brown and Justin Green going their own way.  But while some may want to focus on the bad news that came up over the final week of Signing Season, the truth is that Ohio State Buckeyes will take the field in 2009 with one of the top recruiting classes in the country, despite not signing a “Pryor.”

For those of you wondering how the main recruiting boards graded Ohio State:

Scout.com: 1
CBS.com: 2
Rivals.com: 4

And while those guys are obviously in the “know,” here is a quick synopsis of what others in the blogosphere as well (as main stream media) are saying about what the Scarlet and Gray was able to do with this season’s back of high school seniors. [Read more...]

WSJ: Ohio Makes the Best Coaches

In a time of the year where football success is not exactly the common theme, we have a recent article by the Wall Street Journal that is not only interesting but makes one simultanously wonder how this translates to success.  If it does at all.

So…You’re Sayin’ There’s a Chance

It happened almost five days ago, and most of us are all still in disbelief about the absolute dismantling that took place at the hands of the Southern California Trojans.  No, we were not favored.  But even the most pessimistic Buckeye fan did not imagine that the Scarlet and Gray would fail to score a touchdown.  Not one.  Senseless penalties, questionable play-calling, and downright lifelessness all lead to the debacle in Los Angeles, California.

The result?  Well, you have a slew of opinions from fans, as well as those who were waiting for the Buckeyes to fail.  Take your pick…We have the comments from our open blog.  We even have the take from our friends over at Eleven Warriors.  And then there are the others

All in all, the consensus among journalists, bloggers and fans of college football: The Buckeyes’ hopes of a National Championship are done.  Kaput.  Finished.  And more often than not, you have a splash of “We told you so.”  Alas, the polls took us down a few rungs as the Associated Press has Ohio State 13th, USA Today places them 14th, and the Coaches Poll is 11th.  Regardless, there are about a dozen teams ahead of Ohio State, and this is all before the BCS even releases their initial take on matters.

Ohio State Football: SI Cover Jinx?

I’m typically not one to harp on the superstitions of the whole SI cover.  Madden cover, sure.  Just ask Michael Vick and Donovan McNabb.  But SI?  Not at all.  The Browns’ Jamal Lewis made the cover last year and the Browns put up one of the more memorable seasons in recent history.  But how often does the #2 team make the cover, with one, three and four being on the inside flap?  Not that I’m complaning… [Read more...]

“Playoffs, you’re talking about playoffs?”

mikeslive.jpgWho’s the guy with the sour puss? Why it’s SEC Commisioner Mike Slive!

In a move that our SEC brethren will no doubt find a way to blame on Ohio State, or the Big Ten in general, the BCS committee decided against going to a plus one format. It was not just the Big Ten and Pac Ten that were opposed to the change however. Commissioners from the Big East, Big 12, WAC, C-USA, MAC, Mountain West and Sun Belt were opposed to changing the nature of the BCS as well. (Thanks to ESPN’s Mark Schlabach)

Big East commissioner Mike Tranghese said if the proposed plus-one model for determining college football’s national champion “looked like a playoff, smelled like a playoff and felt like a playoff,” it probably was a playoff.

For a BCS meeting that was supposed to be uneventful, this bombshell was front and center after the 11 conference commissioners and White met behind closed doors for the third straight day: The Big Ten and Pac-10 aren’t alone in their opposition to a playoff.

And any chance of a college football playoff is dead, at least for a long, long time. [Read more...]

Ohio State Football: Volunteers On Deck…In 2018

osuut.JPG
Fewer teams in the NCAA have been criticized more for their out-of-conference schedule than The Ohio State University.  A quick look at last season’s slate and you’ll find names like Youngstown State, Akron and Kent State – not exactly your typical powerhouse list. After taking on Texas in back-to-back years in a battle of the Big 12 and Big Ten, Ohio State will lock up with USC this coming season, allowing for some play against the ever-vaunted Pac-10.  But, if we look even further ahead, the Plain Dealer is reporting that the Buckeyes will lock up with the Tennessee Volunteers in back-to-back seasons starting in 2018.

The first game of the series will take place Sept. 1, 2018, in Knoxville in the season opener for both teams that year. It will be followed by a Sept. 7, 2019, game at Columbus.

“Tennessee-Ohio State is a great natural match-up for two tradition-laden schools that are less than 400 miles apart,” said Steve Snapp, OSU associate athletic director. “Playing the Volunteers for the first time during the regular season will be a great series for our fans.” [Read more...]
