Shaq Vs Suggestions

shaq-vs-1Last summer Shaq challenged several pro athletes for his series Shaq Vs. It appears that enough people watched to entice the network to renew the show for 6 more episodes. While I’d much rather see Shaq’s other idea for a show realized (he recently suggested a reality show following the Cavaliers) it got me wondering what other athletes and sports might be interesting to watch Shaq try to compete in? Here’s what WFNY came up with-

Shaq Vs Joey Chestnut

Okay, there is a chance you don’t know who Joey Chestnut is. Shame on you. How could you not be familiar with the current Nathan’s Hot Dog Champ? Are you American? Chestnut is a competitive eater, which may not be a sport in many eyes, but we’re certainly willing to stretch the definitions (not to mention Shaq’s waistline) for our entertainment. Chestnut holds the world record in five different eating categories. Among those are hot dogs (68 in ten minutes), deep fried asparagus (8.6 pounds), steak (4.5 pounds in just under nine minutes), pork ribs (9.8 pounds in twelve minutes) and chicken wings (241).

I’d like to see the chicken wing challenge personally. As with all competitions, Shaq would have to get some sort of handicap. I would suggest this- first contestant to finish their plate of wings wins. On Chestnut’s plate- 100 wings. On Shaq’s plate- 50 wings. Sauce is up to the competitor. Could Shaq finish 50 before Chestnut downs 100? Chestnut is built for speed, but let’s not pretend that Shaq can’t down some food. [Read more...]

While We’re Waiting… Shaq’s Mobility, An MLB Playoff Preview, and Jamal Lewis’ 30th Birthday

shaq-vs-3We give a [darn] about the drama that you do bring, I’m just trying to change the color on your mood ring: “So far, Shaq has shown the shooting touch that encourages opponents to use the ”Hack-a-Shaq” tactic, along with, in the Williams’ exercise, diminished mobility that makes him possibly more vulnerable than incumbent center Zydrunas Ilgauskas against the high pick-and-roll.  Shaq’s show might be a disturbing peek into the future, physically. Philosophically, the Cavaliers’ attempt to win the NBA championship will depend on O’Neal’s willingness to renounce the very premise of “Shaq Vs,” which is that he has no limits and is more than “just a basketball player.” [Bill Livingston/Plain Dealer]

Shaq vs Common Sense?

shaq-footballSaw a video of Shaq fighting Oscar De La Hoya over at ’64 and Counting. Tonight you can catch a double dose of the show on ABC starting at 8 with a replay of Shaq vs Ben Roethlisberger, and then a new episode at 9 with Shaq taking on Misty May-Treanor and Kerri Walsh in beach volleyball. Perhaps you may even catch a glimpse of the executive producer of the show. No, probably not.

I admittedly didn’t get to watch the first episode, (Scott did) so I don’t know how intense these ‘competitions’ are. The  clip of the fight with De La Hoya certainly didn’t throw up any red flags, as the two were about as civil with each other as sparring partners usually are. But I still have to wonder if these little tests of Shaq’s athletic prowess are really what you want to see from your 37 year old center. [Read more...]

shaq-wwe-9I’ll take backhanded compliments for $500, Alex: “Don’t call him the Big Rip-off: Shaquille O’Neal says ex-teammate Steve Nash’s idea for a TV show was “slightly different” from “Shaq VS.” [...] O’Neal said Saturday that Nash’s idea was about training with other athletes, not competing against them. O’Neal also noted that Nash is an executive producer on his ABC show. Says O’Neal: “He’s the Canadian Aaron Spelling, and I’m the black Spielberg.” [AP/Arizona Central]

Shaq Vs: Drama with Steve Nash, Legal Suit

shaq-tmzAn interesting subplot in regard to Shaquille O’Neal’s “reality” show has apparently bubbled up over the last few days.  While O’Neal was the man behind the microphone as well as the center on Tuesday night, the Arizona Republic reports that he won’t be the only one getting credit for the show when it comes to compensation.

There’s an interesting back story here, one that explains in part some of the fractured relationships that defined the Suns’ struggles last season.

O’Neal stole [Steve] Nash’s idea. [Read more...]

Shaq Vs: Entertaining with a Side of Cheese

shaq-vs-1Last night provided us all with the long awaited premier of Shaquille O’Neal’s reality television show Shaq Vs. By now, you know the premise.  Gigantic basketball player a bit past his prime challenges other athletes in their respective sports to prove that he is more well-rounded than perceived – you know, as a gigantic basketball player a bit past his prime.

While I was unsure as to how the entire show would unfold, I must say that if I can judge from one show, ABC is focusing and capitalizing on Shaq’s most valuable asset.  His soundbites.  Right out of the gate, Shaquille O’Neal’s mug is front and center dropping one-liner after one-liner.

The pilot episode featured the Big Arostotle taking on Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger.  [Read more...]

ben-roethlisberger

When Cleveland’s own Shaquille O’Neal – The Big Field General – squares off against Pittsburgh QB Ben Roethlisberger Tuesday night, I don’t know – or care – what the competition is that will be used to determine the winner.  I have to think that since its Shaq’s show, he has designed a way for him to have a legitimate chance to win, but even if he hasn’t, he better find one.  We need it…real bad.  Because if Shaq doesn’t get this one, it could be a very, very long time before Cleveland has any kind of gridiron success against the Steel City.  And if Big Ben throws his arm out trying to win…that wouldn’t be too bad either.   [Stepien Rules]

Shaq Vs: O’Neal Challenges Lance Armstrong

shaq-tmzWith Shaquille O’Neal’s reality show (Shaq Vs.) set to premier in about two weeks, the Big Diesel is looking for any challenge that he can find.  Next up on the block?  Lance Armstrong.

In his latest tweet, O’Neal apparently cleared the last week of August or the first week of September to take on Denny’s writstband supplier.  How he would “challenge” the bicyclist is beyond me, but after being shot down on his soccer challenge I think O’Neal would welcome any and all competition.
