Santana Passing the Eye Test

I’m not quite the stats guy that Jacob or Jon are. I’m not even sure what Jon does with numbers even qualifies as simply stats. It’s some kind of mix between math and art, but not a medium I fully understand most of the time to be honest with you. It does make for some fascinating reading material. Last week Jon gave us some ‘translations’ for what kind of numbers we might expect to see from Carlos Santana based on his play so far in Columbus. Going back a little ways, Jacob wrote this piece on Santana’s consistency.

While I may not be a stats guy, I am a baseball guy. In his Clip Show reports Dan has been telling us for weeks just how good Santana looks. I have to agree. Even in the limited time we’ve seen him in Cleveland, Carlos has the look of a baseball player. He passes the eye test immediately. [Read more...]

Tribe Weekend Recap: Santana, Strasburg, and Actual Fans!

What a weekend it was down at the corner of Carnegie and Ontario. The new face of the franchise, Carlos Santana, arrived with his full offensive arsenal on Friday night. He didn’t get a hit, but his team won its third straight game. A day later, his bat did all the talking and led the Tribe to their fourth straight win in a game that lasted just two hours and five minutes. Finally to close the series, the Indians got to face the phenom of all phenoms, Stephen Strasburg, and play on national TV in front of 32,000 plus.

For the first time since 2007, there was an actual buzz around the stadium all weekend. A major part of that was Santana and Strasburg. Lets call a spade a spade; fans were not coming to the park in droves to see Russell Branyan and David Huff. [Read more...]

Confessions: Am I rooting for Strasburg at the Tribe’s expense?

This afternoon will likely present the most electric atmosphere at Progressive Field this season.  Unfortunately, it’s not on account of the home team.  Stephen Strasburg is a pitching prospect who has come up with unparalleled hype.  In his first ever major league start this past Tuesday night, he electrified his home crowd in Washington with 14 strikeouts.  He struck out the side 3 times and finished the game striking out 8 of the last 9 batters he faced.

His second start this afternoon at Progressive Field will put the Tribe on national TV at home for the first time this season.  The Indians are expecting a huge walk-up crowd and the highest attendance of the season, save for the opening day sellout.  They have sold more than 9,000 tickets to the game since Tuesday night when Strasburg’s debut managed to outshine even an NBA finals game.  It is looking 30-35 thousand will be on hand.  He is the main attraction and the Indians souvenir stands clearly agree.  A lot of you who have decided in the past week to head down to the game are not going to see the Indians.  This raises a dilemma: we likely know why you’re going, but what do you want to see today at the park once you get there?

Santana debuts, Kearns crushes former team for 3rd straight win

When breaking down the schedule at the beginning of the year, the Indians home series with the Nationals looked to be one of the more unappealing weekend series on the schedule.  But the events of the past week have added increased hype and excitement, turning it into one of the more anticipated weekends at Progressive Field.

The highlight of the series was expected to be Stephen Strasburg’s second career start on Sunday, 4 days removed from his scintillating debut.  But after a late call up of Carlos Santana Thursday night, last night’s game took on added significance for Tribe fans.  Santana joined fellow top prospects – Strasburg, Jason Heyward, & Mike Stanton – to make their debut here in the first half of the 2010 season.  Manny Acta wasted no time and put Santana 3rd in the lineup as the starting catcher wearing number 41.

Mangini on Joe Thomas:  ”So is he one of the best left tackles in the league?  ’I think he’s got to be in any of those conversations I think.  Yes, I think you’ve got to discuss him, put him with whoever you want to put him with.  I think he’s pretty good.’  It’s almost as if Mangini knew darn well as he said the words that they’ll be recited back to him at some point between now and the end of the 2011 season.  And it’s likewise almost as if Mangini recognizes that nothing he says will change the fact that Thomas deserves to be paid — and will be paid — among the best left tackles in the league.” [Mike Florio/ProFootballTalk]

This Week In Sports: Furthering Our ADHD

Quite a week, yes? There were some Izzo-to-the-Cavs rumors. Stephen Strasburg made his first start, and now Carlos Santana has finally been called up. The MLB Draft occured. The NBA Finals are on, with a random role player from one of the two teams stepping up to help win every game. College football is looking to change significantly on the horizon. USC got hit extremely hard with sanctions by the NCAA. Somewhere in the footnotes of the week, you’ll see that Oregon’s starting quarterback was kicked off the team. Lord Stanley’s Cup was just awarded to the delegates from Chicago. Oh, and the World Cup kicked off this morning.

With all those things being listed, I’m gonna go all Buddy The Elf on you guys. What’s your favorite sports story of the week?

“There are a whole slew of Cleveland fans who just don’t get it. They don’t get what a razor thin margin is being worked with here, they don’t understand the valuation of major players or prospects, and they don’t get how perfect this organization has to be. I’m not saying the organization is perfect. I’m not even ready to say it’s approaching competence. I’m just saying there’s a lot to follow on the farm as a result of Shapiro’s noted horse-trading prowess and the decisions of whoever’s pulling the levers on the draft this day. And, as it is draft day, that person did some more pulling today and I, for one, choose to be excited about that instead of sort of perplexed by whatever David Huff did.” [Lets Go Tribe]
