Sports, Technology and Taking Things for Granted

Louis CK has a comedy bit where he chides people for complaining about their cell phone not working.  Why?  Cell phones are the most incredible thing in the world when you really think about it.  It is a tiny device that let’s you talk to whoever you want from anywhere you want without wires!  How much do we all take technology for granted every single day?  If you’ll grant me some latitude, I will eventually get back to sports.

A couple weeks ago, my brother and I had to head down to Columbus from Chagrin Falls for some meetings.  He drove and I was riding shotgun.  We were listening to my custom Slacker station on my Android phone and talking.  I got an email from a band from Canton called Lovedrug who my brother and I both like.  Their new EP came out.  With a few clicks on my phone, I bought the EP on Amazon and within literally 20-30 seconds, we were listening to the first song as the rest of the album downloaded.  It didn’t stop there.

On the way back, we were listening to Ron and Fez on XM satellite radio and they started talking about an interview that movie director Kevin Smith did on Marc Maron’s WTF Podcast.  A few more clicks on my phone and Marc Maron’s interview was playing on my phone so we could listen to Kevin Smith talk about what a jerk Bruce Willis was when they were making Cop Out.  What does this have to do with sports? Is LeBron James the Apple Inc. of Sports?

I really like sports. I also really like technology, and more specifically Apple products. My Macbook, though held together by duct tape due to my own stupidity, is my baby. My iPhone is indispensable. I’m looking forward to the day when I can change my setup to desktop + iPad for my computing. So this is an article that will likely interest me and no one else. It’s either one of the most lucid comparisons I’ve ever drawn, or it’s completely contrived. OK, the disclaimers have happened. Read away.

Two (non-political) things that impossible to avoid over the past few weeks in the media have been LeBron’s impending free agency and Apple’s newest devices – the iPad and the likely-to-be-announced-Monday new iPhone. In thinking about the two parties involved (LeBron and Apple) I’ve come to the conclusion that the two are extraordinarily similar in many aspects. I’ve listed a number of areas they’re similar and drawn examples of each so that it’s clear.
