NFL Report: Browns ask permission to interview Vikings’ George Paton

With Chip Kelly news at a standstill for the moment, you can add another name to the GM search for the Browns, according to Jay Glazer on Twitter earlier this afternoon:

George Paton (note: just one “t”, not two like the general) was promoted to the Assistant GM position with the Minnesota Vikings in February 2012. This is his sixth year in Minnesota and he has had a long relationship with team GM Rick Spielman. The Vikings improved from 3-13 in ’11 to 10-6 and a Wild Card berth in ’12.

Previously, Paton also spent six seasons with the Miami Dolphins as their Director of Player Personnel after beginning his post-playing days with the Chicago Bears organization.

Also on the Browns reported list at the moment: former Raiders employee Michael Lombardi, San Francisco’s Tom Gamble and Seattle’s John Idzik.

While Browns fans remain fixated on the team’s coaching search (which will occur before a GM search), Adam Caplan dropped a bit of a bombshell on Twitter this afternoon.

Caplan’s tweet said that Mike Lombardi, already in the Cleveland-related rumor mill, reportedly has already been working on the free agent scene for the Browns. Caplan was quickly bombarded with replies, to which he said it’s not illegal, that Lombardi is just getting ready for the possible job and he’s not certain of possible free agent targets.

Specifically as well, one follower mentioned how he/she preferred hot candidate Tom Gamble, currently the personnel director for the San Francisco 49ers. But, as many have speculated, Caplan replied that the Browns opening isn’t really a true GM position. With Jimmy Haslam and Joe Banner already leading the charge, it’s likely the team is just looking for a salary cap expert.

Albert Breer is reporting that the Browns along with the Jets, Jags and Chargers are pursuing the San Francisco 49ers’ director of player personnel, Tom Gamble.

Gamble has already interviewed with the Jaguars but competition from the Jets might be strongest of all according to NinersNation. According to their information the Jets have put Gamble at the top of their wishlist based on a recommendation from former Colts President Bill Polian.
