Grading the Cavaliers: Zydrunas Ilgauskas

Z report cardWhile the Cavaliers use the All-Star break to rest up (well most of them anyways) we thought it would be a good time to reflect on the season so far, and issue some grades. In addition, we will detail what the Cavaliers will need from each player in order to hoist some team hardware this summer. We start today with Zydrunas Ilgauskas.

Relevant Stats-

Season Averages: 20.6 min / 7.5 pts / 5.3 reb / .451 fg% /  .77 bk

With the addition of Shaq we all knew that Z’s numbers were bound to go down. The question coming into the season concerning Ilgauskas was how well he would adapt to coming off the bench, both mentally and physically. Let’s start with the physical. If you talk to Zydrunas, he will tell you that he feels great this season. His minutes are down to 20.6 per game, or roughly 8 full minutes off his career average. Add those minutes up for 53 games and it is easy to see why he feels fresh. There is more to it than that though. Zydrunas has always been a player that needs shots to get warmed up. He doesn’t usually start a game off lighting up the scoreboard. That has led to a few games this season in which he struggles to make shots, and just never gets going. [Read more...]

Exploring Other Options for the Cavaliers

jerseycavs-copyThe trade deadline is just days away (nine days actually) and we’ve been monitoring all the options we can find for the Cavaliers. One option that hasn’t gotten much attention these days is adding a player after the deadline passes. This obviously is only accomplished by signing players to free agent deals. After the trade deadline passes there are occasionally players that hit the market because they have had their contracts bought out by the current team. It is something that the Cavs are quite familiar with.

Last season the Cavaliers reacquired veteran Joe Smith after the trade deadline when the Oklahoma City Thunder bought out his contract. While not an impact player, Smith logged 19 minutes per game with the Cavs and scored 6.6 points a contest. In the playoffs, Smith had 2 fantastic games against Detroit, but was abused in the series against Orlando.

In addition to getting the player they want, they also have missed out on players such as Antonio McDyess two years ago. [Read more...]

Cavaliers’ Future By The Numbers

Cleveland Cavaliers wastelandWith all the trade rumors swirling around, I realized it’s been a little while since we’ve done some math around here to illustrate the financial implications of what the Cavaliers can and cannot do in the future, as well as how LeBron’s contract will shape the future. Of course I realize that right now the team is solely focus on winning a championship this year, but I promise you that Danny Ferry isn’t making any moves without considering how it will impact the future of this franchise.

For the entirety of this post, I will be using a cap figure for 2010-11 of $54 million. We won’t know the exact number until this offseason, but for now that seems like a fair estimate based on everything I’ve read. [Read more...]

Rekindling the Brandon Marshall to Cleveland Trade Rumors

09000d5d80c462ff_gallery_600Stop us if you have heard this one before: Browns quarterback Brady Quinn is rumored to be a trade chip, going to Denver for wide receiver Brandon Marshall.  This weekend, The Denver Post threw the Cleveland Browns as a possible destination for the disgruntled receiver and managed to add Brady Quinn’s name into the mix.  And  as fans know, it only takes one bout of speculation for the Internet tires to start spinning…

One year ago, we discussed Quinn trade rumors.  He (and teammate Braylon Edwards) spawned our creation of the “alert” system.  But in the end, Quinn stayed put with Eric Mangini opting to turn down any offers which he was presented.  The man donning the No. 10 jersey started the bulk of the Browns games but managed to finish strong thanks to a solid running attack down the home stretch.  Denver’s Marshall accompanied Quinn in the trade rumors folder.  He too stayed with his team, but went on to have another amazing year (101 receptions, 1120 yards, 10 TDs) and capped it off in Miami this weekend for his second Pro Bowl bid. NBA Trade Rumors: Andre Iguodala to Cavs Remains a Possibility

andre-iguodalaWith the trade deadline less than three weeks away, there will certainly be a slew of rumors hitting the mill every single day the rest of the way out. For your Sunday morning enjoyment, beat writer extraordinaire Brian Windhorst is back at the scene with the freshest rumor on the street. Today’s conversation topic is budding Philadelphia 76ers star Andre Iguodala, a 26-year-old star who might be heading out of town due to the rebuilding project going on around his team.

As has been a recent theme in the comments, this trade might actually make the most legitimate sense for the future of the Cavaliers franchise. Having Mo Williams, Andre Iguodala and LeBron James all under 27 years old would clearly make Cleveland the team to beat in the Eastern Conference for many years to come. The front court is certainly not getting any younger while Antawn Jamison is 33 years old, meaning that adding youth might be as big as a priority as adding another seasoned weapon to the already impressive offense.

NBA Trade Rumors: Jamison Staying Put?

Antawn JamisonI’ve spent the past couple days trying to operate under the assumption that if the Cavaliers are going to trade for someone, that player is going to be someone whose name we haven’t heard mentioned in trade rumors. So I’ve been scouring team rosters, looking at salaries, looking at performance, reading up on rifts between players, etc. So you know who I found? Nobody. I’ve got nothing. If the Cavs don’t trade for either Antawn Jamison or Troy Murphy, I don’t see an obvious deal that makes sense for the Cavaliers.

So with things circling back around to Jamison or Murphy, I began to really hone in on Jamison and to think about what the future holds. And in doing so, I saw the article by Gene Wang in the Washington Post with these quotes:

“I’m not going anywhere until they let my agent know,” Jamison said. “I got a pretty good relationship with [the Wizards' front office], and all things pointing forward is being here until my contract is over with, so that’s my mind-frame.”

[…]

“I’ve been playing for a while, and I know how rumors get started, trade rumors, this and that nature,” Jamison said, “but those guys have been looking at me in my face, and pretty much everything is staying put.” [Read more...]

Cavaliers Don’t Have To Make A Trade, but Have No Reason Not To Either

Danny Ferry and Shaquille O'NealI love NBA trade season. Absolutely love it. Everything about it. I love spending time breaking down rumors of trades that have no realistic chance of ever happening. I love scouring the internet for every little tidbit and whisper I can find. I love debating the merits of potential trades with friends and readers of this site. I love it all because it’s fun, and it keeps me sharp. It keeps me consistently thinking about the game in new and different ways, and how the pieces in this giant puzzle really all fit together.

For all this exuberance over trade season, though, sometimes it’s worth sitting back and assessing the situation as it currently exists and asking an even more primal question: Should this team even make a trade at all? [Read more...]

NBA Trade Rumors: Cavaliers Talking To Suns About Amare Stoudemire

Amare StoudemireThe NBA trade rumors are only going to heat up from here, and the Cleveland Cavaliers are sure to be included in many/most of the rumors out there. We’ve seen beat writers across the country report time and again that the Cavaliers are being the most active team in seeking out a trade to improve this team before the playoffs. The Cavaliers have the assets (expiring contracts) and the desire to get something done, and now they just need to find a willing trade partner. And that’s where Danny Ferry may once again look no further than his good friend Steve Kerr.

Brian Windhorst of the Plain Dealer first brought this to our attention in Ohio last night via Twitter, but Paul Coro of the Arizona Republic is reporting the Cavaliers and the Phoenix Suns have had some discussions about a trade to send Amare Stoudemire to Cleveland. [Read more...]

NBA Trade Rumor: Andre Iguodala to the Cavs?

90041634DD001_CAVS_SIXERSWith the NBA trade deadline one month away, the rumors continue to swirl.  Latest Cavs-related bit to hit the wire comes from ESPN’s Marc Stein who attempts to link Cleveland to a possible deal with Philadelphia for Andre Iguodala.

On paper, Iquodala is just what the Cavaliers would need.  AI2, not to be confused with his teammate Allen Iverson, averages 18 points, seven rebounds, six assists, two steals and just over one three-point field goal per game.  He’s an amazing athlete that can throw down with the best of them.  His career field goal percentage is 46.4 percent and he would fit in well in terms of perimeter defense – think Stephen Jackson with less propensity for in-game insanity and strip club gun fights.  He’s great at getting to the line and converts at a fairly high rate.

But here is where we end the “pros” involved with Iguodala.  [Read more...]

nike-hypermax-david-west-black-purple-04Do the Hyperdunks come in Wine and Gold? “The latest rumor (from Bob Finnan of “The Morning Journal”) is that the Cavs have offered Zydrunas Ilgauskas to the New Orleans Hornets for their star power forward David West. There has been talk of the Cavs’ interest in West, but now they’ve apparently made an offer. Well, of course they have.

Finnan attributes this rumor to an unnamed “league source,” but for simplicity’s sake, I’m going to go ahead and verify this for you:

It’s true. 100%.

Ferry would give up Z in a heartbeat to land West, straight-up. Who wouldn’t make this trade? (With the obvious exception of every single Hornets fan.) [The Wine and Goldrush]

In Limbo: Cavaliers Trade Plans Still In Neutral…For Now

shaqjamisonBy all accounts, the Cleveland Cavaliers have begun to get serious about trading Zydrunas Ilgauskas. I don’t think there’s a single person in the Cavaliers organization, and precious few individuals in the fan community, who wants to see Ilgauskas play in another uniform. All things being equal, we all would love to see Big Z play his entire career for this franchise. Having said that, though, the reality of the situation is that this is a business, and Big Z’s status as an expiring contract has made him an NBA commodity.

This trade deadline could be the Cavaliers’ final chance to make the needed improvements to make a Championship run. Without getting too deep into this summer, I’ll just state the obvious that nobody knows what LeBron is going to do, and so this is the last year Cleveland is guaranteed to have the game’s best player on their roster. This is why it is imperative that the Cavaliers make their move and turn their commodities into Championship caliber assets.   [Read more...]

Threat Level Purple and Gold: Chris Bosh’s Role In Crushing Cavalier Dreams

Chris Bosh to the Lakers?

What’s the biggest obstacle standing in the way of the Cleveland Cavaliers’ dreams of Championship glory? Is it the Boston Celtics? The Orlando Magic? The Charlotte Bobcats (no joke)? Perhaps the Los Angeles Lakers? What if it’s none of the above, but actually Chris Bosh? Well, ok, not “none of the above”, but one of the above with Chris Bosh plus the Lakers. [Read more...]

Antawn Jamison vs David West: Which Side Are You On?

David WestAs we continue to approach NBA Trade Season, the rumors involving the Cavaliers continue to heat up as well. It’s been well documented that the Cavaliers covet Antawn Jamison and they would love nothing more than to add his services to this team. With the recent implosion of the Wizards franchise, it started to sound more and more like a Jamison trade would be possible.

A new dark horse candidate has entered the ring, though, and it’s an exciting one. Now, you can take this as a for-what-it’s-worth bit of info, but according to ESPN’s Chris Sheridan in an ESPN.com chat yesterday, the most likely player on the Cavaliers to be traded is not Ilgauskas, but Daniel Gibson, and he thinks the Cavs can use Gibson to get David West from the New Orleans Hornets. Now Is The Time To Pull The Trigger For Jamison

Antawn JamisonYou have to admit that, for being a Cleveland sports site and being “rivals” of the Washington Wizards, we really haven’t taken too many cheap shots at the Wizards over this whole Gilbert Arenas fiasco. Perhaps because in truth, I’ve quietly been watching from afar, just waiting for this thing to spiral out of control to the point that Washington will get serious about moving their pieces.

Well, that time is now. Chris Mannix of SI.com wrote an article about the fallout of the Arenas scandal and how it will affect other teams in the league. In the article, he points out that literally every single player on the Wizards roster can be had, writing:

“According to multiple league sources, Washington is making its entire roster available and is open to all trades, including for players who bring less talent but have shorter contracts.”

That has to be music to Danny Ferry’s ears. As I pointed out earlier today, the Cavaliers offense has not always been what it should be this season. Picking up someone like Antawn Jamison is, as we’ve pointed out time and time again, precisely what the doctor ordered for the Cavaliers. The problem has always been the Cavaliers lack of solid young talent to sweeten any pot. But if the “including for players who bring less talent but have shorter contracts” line is to believed, this trade rumor may heat up sooner than we thought.   [Read more...]

NBA Trade Rumors: Who is the Most Likely Cleveland Cavalier to Be Traded?

AP Photo/Matt York

AP Photo/Matt York

Following yesterday’s beat down of the Los Angeles Lakers, it seems to be an appropriate question to ask which individual is the most likely to be traded sometime this season. One year ago, it was relatively easy to proclaim that Ben Wallace, Wally Szczerbiak and Sasha Pavlovic were not going to be on the team for the long-run, but things get trickier now as we head into 2010. Cleveland now is 23-8, the third-best record in the NBA, and just easily defeated the best team in the NBA on the road by 15 points.

Brendan analyzed some of the possible individuals that could be new in a Cavalier uniform a week ago, but now it is time to jump to the other side of the table. Many trade rumors are out there and in order to bring in some sort of difference maker or All-Star, it will probably require some fat contracts as well as some talented prospects. The pickings are slim when it comes to our roster overall and after the jump, here are the main four candidates for a potential trade by the Cavaliers:

NBA Trade Rumors: Is Troy Murphy the Missing Piece?

troy MurphySo it seems trade talk season is starting up. Brian Windhorst teased us a few days ago via his twitter account, and Brendan followed up with the news that our options appear to be three-fold:  Rumored to be targets are Anthony Randolph of the Warriors, Antawn Jamison of the Wizards and Troy Murphy of the Pacers. We’ve certainly heard Jamison’s name before, as the Cavs kicked the tires on that option last season.

Randolph is in his second year. He averages 11.4 points, 6.5 rebounds, 1.3 blocks in just under 23 minutes per game. His PER is 17.82. (For those looking to compare, Hickson averages 7.4 points, 3.8 boards, 0.4 blocks in 19 minutes a contest. His PER is 13.7.) Here is a piece of Hollinger’s comments on Randolph’s play: [Read more...]

Operation Increase Derek Anderson’s Trade Value

sad-da

With the news that Brady Quinn is going to miss the final two games of the regular season, former Pro Bowl quarterback Derek Anderson will once again get the starting nod under center.  The beareded one will have two games to rectify what was essentially a disaster performance in 2009 with the sole goal of increasing his trade value in the upcoming offseason. Someday We’ll All Look Back at This and Laugh (Or So We Hope): The Nightmare Start to the Cavaliers Season

LeBron JamesSo here we are. It’s not even November yet and the Cavaliers find themselves at 0-2. This normally wouldn’t be so bad, but there are two problems. First, if we can be honest for a minute, Cleveland fans don’t handle adversity well at all. Whenever the slightest thing goes awry, we can’t help ourselves but to expect the absolute worst. Second, it’s not just the fact the Cavaliers are 0-2, but it’s the manner in which they have been defeated. Both games have seen the Cavaliers play extended stretches of horrific basketball which exposed some major flaws.

Which leads us to the question of the day. Is this a time for patience or for panic? It’s not all that easy of a question to answer. After all, while the Cavaliers have yet to show any signs of life we’ve seen Eastern Conference rivals Boston hold Charlotte to 59 points for an entire game and Orlando score 70 points in just the first half of their first game. In other words, those teams are coming out of the gate full bore while the Cavaliers look like a team who is just now meeting each other for the first time. It’s a problem.

Before we submit to panic, though, it’s perhaps more beneficial to try to identify the problems that exist and then determine a) how easily they can be fixed and b) how likely they are to be fixed. If we can determine the answers to these questions, we can have a better handle on where our emotional barometers should lie.   [Read more...]

Warriors Looking To Acquire Ilgauskas?

Zydrunas IlgauskasIn the past couple days we’ve talked about how Cavaliers center Zydrunas Ilgauskas could be contemplating retirement following this year, we’ve discussed his importance to the Cavs’ legacy, and we’ve even discussed how he might be an integral part of a team that could have the potential to be one of the best NBA teams ever.

But what if he’s not even on the Cavaliers this year? How would that change things? Marcus Thompson wrote in his Inside The Warriors blog for the Contra Costa Times that he’s heard rumors that the Golden State Warriors are trying to acquire Ilgauskas. He writes:

One rumor I’ve heard lately is that the Warriors have talked with Cleveland about acquiring Zydrunas Ilgauskas from the Cavaliers.    [Read more...]

NFL Rumors: Derek Anderson Trade Looming?

derek-anderson-campA lot of Browns fans were shocked to see that neither Brady Quinn nor Derek Anderson would be playing during last night’s game against the Bears.  For a quarterback controversy that had allegedly not been decided to this point, the surprise makes sense.

However, if you look at the other side of the coin, not playing the two quarterbacks does two things:

1) It keeps the decision in Eric Mangini’s court.  A few snaps at this point in the season would not make either quarterback better, especially at the cost of the downside of injury.  All it takes is one play; if either quarterback were to succumb to even a minor nick, not only does that take the decision out of Mangini’s hands, it also decreases the value of the other QB.

2) It (supposedly) keeps the Minnesota Vikings guessing.
