Colt McCoy Talks Browns, Steelers on The Dan Patrick Show

Dan Patrick caught up with Colt McCoy today on his radio show, and in case you missed it, I wanted to run down some of the stuff that Colt had to say.  If you would like to listen to the entire segment, you can do that on DanPatrick.com

DP: “Are you the starting quarterback for the Cleveland Browns?”

CM: “Well, I finished the season as the starting quarterback, so I hope so.”

DP: “Do you have a business card that says, ‘Colt McCoy – Starting Quarterback’?”

CM: “No, I don’t.  I just work hard every day, go to work, and know that I am the starting quarterback for the Cleveland Browns.”

DP: “Have you been told that?”

CM: “(laughing) I’m on the hot seat already.  It was unfortunate that I got hurt, but I think that was the intent to finish off the season….”

DP: “Who has bigger arms… Peyton Hillis or Joe Thomas?” [Read more...]

Open Thread: Browns Game #6 v. Steelers

CNNSI ignores our wins :(

CNNSI ignores our wins :(

The Browns travel to Pittsburgh today to take on the 3-2 Steelers (1 PM, CBS/WTAM 1100).  If you haven’t caught our takes on the game, be sure to take a gander at our Browns Will Win If post from Friday.  Alternatively, you can dig through the numbers with Rick (hint: it’s a grim prognosis).  Unfortunately for the Browns, Troy Polamalu is back, making the Browns’ offensive challenges even greater.

I digress – you’re not interested in what I have to say, just the game.  So leave your thoughts here as the game progresses.  Keep it clean, and if nothing else take comfort in the fact that you’re not watching this travesty of a team all alone – you’ve got internet friends to watch the game with.

Oh, Good. Troy Polamalu Should Play This Week

Polamalu BrownsSince spraining his knee on opening night, Pittsburgh’s safety (and Head and Shoulders poster boy) Troy Polamalu should make his triumphant return this week as they host the Browns.

If you recall, Polamalu made an amazing interception against Tennessee, and has not seen the field since thanks to John Madden 2010.  If you also recall, the Browns were unable to amass a touchdown against an awful defense just two days ago and Pittsburgh is considerably better even without the Pro Bowl safety.

Current line is set at 14 points.  I wouldn’t be surprised if it’s a larger number by gametime.

Good move for Pittsburgh?  Just ask Brett Favre last season.  Or Mike Vick in 2004.  Or Shaun Alexander in 2007.  Vince Young in 2008…

Hey, at this point, I’ll take any sort of advantage over the Steelers – even if it may be mythical and video game-related.

If Browns Can’t Trade Down they Should Sit and Wait

Browns Draft FootballIf the Browns can’t trade down, maybe they should just pass for a while and then pick later.  This is the conclusion that I am aiming to prove.  Now, I know that isn’t really the proper way to go about doing analysis.  Still, this is the burgeoning philosophy that has been forming in my brain for the last few years.  And it is a natural conclusion for a Browns fan.  Tim Couch, Courtney Brown and Gerard Warren are exhibits A-C.

Obviously it is easy to take the other side of the argument as well.  Joe Thomas was taken high in the first round and has been worth every penny of his top-five draft money.  But, unless you see another Joe Thomas surefire, slam dunk draft pick on the board, you are asking for trouble drafting that high because of the contract demands.  I would argue that there isn’t a surefire pick in this year’s draft.  There is no quarterback that I am dying to have.  There isn’t another offensive tackle that I am dying to have.  Maybe I am ignorant, but Orakpo and Curry don’t even blow my mind.  Crabtree is probably the closest thing to a sure thing from what I can see, and that seems too high to take a wide receiver, even for these receiving-challenged Browns.

Obviously, the real goal is to trade down, but what if that opportunity doesn’t present itself?  Should the Browns be unable to trade down, would it be worthwhile to just pass on the number five pick and wait a few picks and pick lower where the risk / reward ratio is a bit more balanced? The Name on the Door is… “Losers”?

10 in a row. 15 out of 16. 0 TD, 2 FG; a 10-6 loss. 208 yards total offense. 44.5 QB rating. -2 turnover margin.

Those were some of the numbers. The most important numbers: 0-2, 2 games back in the division. Already.

I will be the first to admit that, up until this game started, if you’d told me the Browns would be in it the entire night with a chance to tie with just over three minutes left in the fourth quarter, I’d have laughed in your face. So, in that respect, that Browns did far better than I ever expected, especially in holding Pittsburgh to 10 points. Whether that was in spite of–or because of–the weather conditions, I will leave that to all of you to discuss. I can only break down what I watched last night from section 345, row 35. Here’s what I saw: [Read more...]
