About This “NBA to Block Zydrunas Ilgauskas” Nonsense

cavs hallway IlgauskasAs the Cleveland Cavaliers are in the midst of a three-game losing streak, many fans are curious as to the future regarding center Zydrunas Ilgauskas.  The man they affectionately know as “Big Z” was traded to the Washington Wizards (along with a draft pick) in exchange for Antawn Jamison.  His pictures are down, he has a new jersey number, but he also can return to Cleveland following a 30-day period.  But will he be able to?

The Internet was thrown into a tale spin once LA Times reporter Mark Heisler tweeted that a source of his told him that the NBA was planning on blocking Ilgauskas from returning back to Cleveland.  Yahoo! basketball reporter – and resident proprietor of all things negative regarding LeBron James and Cleveland – Adrian Wojnarowski took this report and published his own twist on the matter, making things appear worse.

On the Potential Life Without Zydrunas Ilgauskas

cavs hallway IlgauskasIt isn’t quite as bad as when the Indians replaced banners of Victor Martinez with those of Slider, but the Cavaliers have removed the images of Zydrunas Ilgauskas from the halls of Quicken Loans Arena.  A guy that general manager Danny Ferry referred to as “world class,” Ilgauskas was used in the trade that brought Antawn Jamison to Cleveland.  And while many anticipate that the man known as “Big Z” will return after a buyout, it may not be as cut and dry.

During yesterday’s press conference, Ferry appeared to be fighting back tears when discussing what it meant to have to trade Ilgauskas.

“In order to add quality players, tough decisions have to be made,” said Ferry.  “We wish [Zydrunas] and his family nothing but the best.”

Jamsion Trade FAQs

jerseycavs-copyThe emails and tweets started trickling in right after the deal was first reported. You had questions. Lots of questions. I try to answer as many emails as I can, and I know the other guys do the same. I thought perhaps a frequently asked questions post might be in order, since so many more probably are wondering the same things, but didn’t ask. Here goes-

Will Zydrunas be back?

It’s funny, but no matter how many times it has been written that the Cavs were trying to acquire Jamison or Amar’e or whoever, Ilgauskas’ name is always the one that comes up. But when the deal finally happens it was like some sort of shock that Z is gone.

I really like Zydrunas. I think he is one of the best Cavaliers ever. I think he is one of the nicest pro athletes I’ve ever met. And like we’ve all been saying- his contract will be bought out, and he will be back in 30 days. Is that a 100% certainty? No, but not much aside from death and taxes is. [Read more...]

NBA Trade Deadline Day: Cavs Trade for Antawn Jamison – Timeline

Antawn JamisonThe Cavaliers have dominated nearly every minute of the Cleveland headlines for the past week without playing a game.  The week was one of the more hectic and tense weeks of the LeBron James era as the Cavs sought a trade to improve for their championship run this spring while also considering the underlying specter of LeBron’s impending free agency.  At 6PM Wednesday, the week came to a climax when the Cavs completed a trade for Antawn Jamison.  Let’s take a look at how the trade for Jamison developed and materialized over the course of Wednesday.

By Tuesday night, things had seemingly reached a plateau of serenity relative to the rest of this past week.  The Cavs had allegedly put their cards on the table and were waiting for a call back from Steve Kerr and the Phoenix Suns.  The Cavs were believed to have offered Z, JJ Hickson, one other peripheral player, and a draft pick for Amar’e Stoudemire.

NBA Trade Rumors: Comparing Jamison, Murphy, Stoudemire, Z and Hickson

Numbers.001With rumors all around, it is time to stop the conspiracy theories and start to analyze what the different options bring to the table. Certainly there are various financial reasons to make particular moves or another, but this article will focus on what the most commonly mentioned trade pieces bring to the court. The individuals under examination in this article are Washington’s Antawn Jamison, Indiana’s Troy Murphy and Phoenix’s Amare Stoudemire.

In order to grasp what these players would really bring to a title contender in Cleveland, it is also necessary to see how their style of play contrasts that provided currently by Zydrunas Ilgauskas and J.J. Hickson. These two individuals are the main pieces of any package in a trade offered by Cleveland, with Z expected to return back to the team in a buyout. So how much better are these players than what the Cavs have right now? What are these differences and what do all of the statistics show us in the end?

NBA Trade Rumors: Jamison Staying Put?

Antawn JamisonI’ve spent the past couple days trying to operate under the assumption that if the Cavaliers are going to trade for someone, that player is going to be someone whose name we haven’t heard mentioned in trade rumors. So I’ve been scouring team rosters, looking at salaries, looking at performance, reading up on rifts between players, etc. So you know who I found? Nobody. I’ve got nothing. If the Cavs don’t trade for either Antawn Jamison or Troy Murphy, I don’t see an obvious deal that makes sense for the Cavaliers.

So with things circling back around to Jamison or Murphy, I began to really hone in on Jamison and to think about what the future holds. And in doing so, I saw the article by Gene Wang in the Washington Post with these quotes:

“I’m not going anywhere until they let my agent know,” Jamison said. “I got a pretty good relationship with [the Wizards' front office], and all things pointing forward is being here until my contract is over with, so that’s my mind-frame.”

[…]

“I’ve been playing for a while, and I know how rumors get started, trade rumors, this and that nature,” Jamison said, “but those guys have been looking at me in my face, and pretty much everything is staying put.” [Read more...]

In Limbo: Cavaliers Trade Plans Still In Neutral…For Now

shaqjamisonBy all accounts, the Cleveland Cavaliers have begun to get serious about trading Zydrunas Ilgauskas. I don’t think there’s a single person in the Cavaliers organization, and precious few individuals in the fan community, who wants to see Ilgauskas play in another uniform. All things being equal, we all would love to see Big Z play his entire career for this franchise. Having said that, though, the reality of the situation is that this is a business, and Big Z’s status as an expiring contract has made him an NBA commodity.

This trade deadline could be the Cavaliers’ final chance to make the needed improvements to make a Championship run. Without getting too deep into this summer, I’ll just state the obvious that nobody knows what LeBron is going to do, and so this is the last year Cleveland is guaranteed to have the game’s best player on their roster. This is why it is imperative that the Cavaliers make their move and turn their commodities into Championship caliber assets.   [Read more...]

Antawn Jamison and Leon Powe: Will They Ever Play Together for the Cavs?

29sCavs12.jpgThe calendar has recently turned to 2010 and the city of Cleveland is less than six months away from a possible doomsday occasion with the beginning of NBA free agency in July. This is arguably the last season of productivity for Zydrunas Ilgauskas and Shaquille O’Neal, meaning that even more changes will be coming next summer as well if those two players come off the books. This is the season however, where the Cavs need to step up and prove to their franchise savior that they are his best option towards winning an NBA title immediately.

Looking towards the rest of this season, the biggest thing that could affect this team for the playoffs and their ability to keep LeBron James for the future will be what they do on the trade market. There is slightly over a month left until the NBA trading deadline, and the Cavs have several assets that they will offer up for a difference maker alongside LBJ. The biggest rumor of late is sending Zydrunas Ilgauskas to Washington for veteran power forward Antawn Jamison. At 33 years old and with a hefty contract for the next two seasons, such a trade would limit the off-season possibilities for Cleveland in 2010 but would bring a third legitimate 20-point scoring threat to the roster.

While We’re Waiting… Will Lewis, Chris Jent, Jamison Talk and Teal Bunbury

Seattle keeps on pouring over to Cleveland with that organization expected to hire Pete Carroll as the face of their franchise. Keep an eye out over the weekend to see if is Lewis or Heckert as the new GM: “Browns president Mike Holmgren interviewed Seattle director of pro personnel Will Lewis for the Browns general manager job Friday and said through Browns spokesman Neal Gulkis ‘it went very well.’” [Mary Kay Cabot/Cleveland Plain Dealer]

How much would you pay Josh Cribbs? This post questions what is worth the price: “With the recent contract of Devin Hester getting top dollar, is not paying Josh Cribbs top dollar smart? I believe so, I think Cribbs needs to get paid more money then what he is currently. Cribbs is a Return man but also did help the offense this year move the football the last part of the season.” [Randy Ward/Browns Gab]

Cavs 121, Wizards 98: Never Close

shaqjamisonAfter laying down against Charlotte the Cavaliers came out aggressive and put the Wizards away. Washington was without it’s big gun of course (did I really just go there?) as Arenas sat out the first of his many games due to suspension. Without Gilbert the Wizards looked a bit lost. They played a lot of one-on-one basketball which is a recipe for disaster against the Cavs.

Cleveland’s offense looked good, with plenty of movement and passing. On more than one occasion all 5 players touched the ball before the shot went off. There were still sloppy possessions and unforced turnovers, but those were hardly noticeable against Washington.

Shaquille O’Neal had one of his best games in a Cleveland uniform scoring 17 points in 17 minutes on 9 shots. That’s pretty efficient. Anderson Varejao and LeBron James padded their +/- totals in this one, keeping them in the top 3 in the league. (Andy had a +22, James a +16. If you want to know how strange that stat can be, Shaq had a -1.) [Read more...]

Cavaliers Preview Game #37: Wiz at Cavs

Washington Wizards (11-21) vs
Cleveland Cavaliers (27-9)
Quicken Loans Arena, Cleveland, OH
Wednesday, January 6, 2010
7:00 PM EST
FSOH/WTAM

Oh boy, where do we even begin with this one? Just two months ago the Wiz came into town boasting a 2-1 record while the Cavs had limped to a 2-2 start, and the confidence of Wizards fans was through the roof. Of course, the Cavaliers came away with 102-90 victory that night and really haven’t looked back. For the Wiz, their journey to this point in time has been completely different. I’m not going to get into the Arenas situation  and the fact that everyone on the team is now trade bait, other than just to say I’m thankful right now to follow the Cavaliers and not the Wizards.

Tonight’s game is one of those ones where perhaps the Wizards will band together, bonded by their recent controversies, their uncertain future status, and their hatred of the Cavaliers to create an Us vs World mentality. Meanwhile, the Cavaliers will make their first attempt to adjusting to life without Jamario Moon tonight. Regardless of all the subplots involved in this matchup, I still expect to see a quality game tonight. After all, the Cavaliers will be wearing their CavFanatic 80s style uniforms with the Wine and Gold colors. With uniforms like these, how can they lose?

Now Is The Time To Pull The Trigger For Jamison

Antawn JamisonYou have to admit that, for being a Cleveland sports site and being “rivals” of the Washington Wizards, we really haven’t taken too many cheap shots at the Wizards over this whole Gilbert Arenas fiasco. Perhaps because in truth, I’ve quietly been watching from afar, just waiting for this thing to spiral out of control to the point that Washington will get serious about moving their pieces.

Well, that time is now. Chris Mannix of SI.com wrote an article about the fallout of the Arenas scandal and how it will affect other teams in the league. In the article, he points out that literally every single player on the Wizards roster can be had, writing:

“According to multiple league sources, Washington is making its entire roster available and is open to all trades, including for players who bring less talent but have shorter contracts.”

That has to be music to Danny Ferry’s ears. As I pointed out earlier today, the Cavaliers offense has not always been what it should be this season. Picking up someone like Antawn Jamison is, as we’ve pointed out time and time again, precisely what the doctor ordered for the Cavaliers. The problem has always been the Cavaliers lack of solid young talent to sweeten any pot. But if the “including for players who bring less talent but have shorter contracts” line is to believed, this trade rumor may heat up sooner than we thought.   [Read more...]

You’re not playing in a pickup game. You’re not going to impress anyone with your biceps. And if you’re not in shape? No one wants to see your arm fat folded over the fabric, or how the jersey accentuates your stomach.

And I’m not just saying this because as a kid in CYO I wore an undershirt to hide my toothpick arms. And I’m not saying this because I look absolutely ridiculous in a jersey these days thanks to my gut. It’s just not a good look, especially when you raise your arms in triumph over a LeBron dunk and your neighbor is subjected to whatever romantic smells emanate from your pits.” ['64 and Counting]

Cavs Win Streak, Wizards Losing Streak Both Snapped as Wiz Pull off 108-91 Win

LeBron JamesThe Cleveland Cavaliers came into Wednesday night’s game in Washington nursing a 5 game win streak. The Wizards meanwhile had been losers of 6 straight, a streak the Cavaliers started earlier this month in Cleveland. Both streaks would reach their end by the time this game was over.

LeBron James had a stellar offensive night with 34 points and 9 assists, but the story of the game was Antawn Jamison’s return to the lineup. Jamison came out of the gate on fire, scoring 13 points in the first quarter, and he would end up with 31 points on the night.

The Cavaliers were on fire in the first quarter and they would open up a 17 point lead at one point in the first half. Once the shots stopped falling, though, the Wizards collected themselves and used a 4 pronged attack of Jamison, Caron Butler, Mike Miller, and Gilbert Arenas to take over the game. Those 4 Wizards combined for 85 of the Wizards 108 points and the Cavaliers defense never looked up for the challenge of slowing down the Wiz.   [Read more...]

LeBron, Hickson and Gibson (Sans Headband) Lead Cavs over Wariors, 114-108

Welcome to the Club, Monta

Welcome to the Club, Monta

In what was slated to be a sure win for the Cavaliers, things got a bit tense in the fourth quarter.  Ultimately, the Cavaliers – playing without a few key pieces – prevailed over the also shorthanded Golden State Warriors to the tune of 114-108.

LeBron James managed to do his thing once again, scoring a relatively quiet 31 points on 11-of-19 from the floor.  Can 31 points be quiet?  It can when 20 points comes in the second half after focusing more attention on setting up teammates.  A very patient James allotted the majority of his game to finding open teammates, resulting in 12 assists to go with a steal and and two blocked shots.  [Read more...]

Finally, A Glimpse – Shaq Steps Up

lebron-shaq

As Rick touched on in his recap, the Cavs definitely flipped a proverbial switch after a slow start and came on to trounce the Wizards 102-90. And, as Rick pointed out, “Shaquille O’Neal had his best game as a Cavalier.” Granted, the sample size is a bit small with only five games, but to my eyes we definitely caught a glimpse of what the Cavs are expecting from Shaq when the games really count (you know, in April and on).

A couple of things stood out to me as I watched this game, specifically in relation to The Big Aristotle and his game. [Read more...]

“So why this head now? There are two primary competing views. One holds that Lerner finally recognized a supposed mistake in hiring a coach before a GM this off-season, and now seeks to remedy that failure and install a GM who’d serve as an adequate “check and balance” on Eric Mangini’s power. The other, we think better, view is that the decision to dump Kokinis was more a vote of confidence in Mangini than an assault on his power. There are credible reports that the Mangini/Kokinis relationship was doomed from the start — that Kokinis was promised final say on personnel decisions when hired but was nevertheless forced to take a back seat to Mangini, thus poisoning the relationship between the two. This view is supported by Kokinis’ virtual invisibility since joining the franchise.” [Cleveland Frowns]

Cavs 102 Wizards 90: A Turning Point?

Shaq blocks MillerIf you watched the game, you already know the storyline being penned and typed around the Forrest City. “After sluggish start the Cavaliers finally get everything together.” For this game anyway, you certainly would have to say that.

After falling behind by 18 points, the Cavaliers played like a team with heart. Shaquille O’Neal had his best game as a Cavalier, and Dainel Gibson caught fire making four 3 point shots. He also stepped up and played great individual and team defense. But could this be a turning point in the Cavs’ season?

The Cavs certainly played with more enthusiasm and at times looked like their old selves on the defensive side of the ball. Nobody is going to deny that. I would cautiously call to your attention a familiar phrase- match-up problems. As in the Wizards sure don’t seem to have an answer for the Cavaliers’ new look. Specifically, they have nobody that can come close to guarding Shaq down on the block. [Read more...]
