NFL Draft: WVU’s Bruce Irvin to visit Cleveland Browns

The Browns are certainly putting in their homework on the outside linebacker position as it appears they’re planning for life after (or without) Scott Fujita. They are also, apparently looking to get faster and more athletic at the spot as they are set to meet with West Virginia’s Bruce Irvin. Aaron Wilson of Scout.com has the report.

West Virginia outside linebacker-defensive end Bruce Irvin has a busy schedule with upcoming visits with the Buffalo Bills, Cleveland Browns, New England Patriots, New York Jets, Carolina Panthers, Tennessee Titans and the Kansas City Chiefs, according yo a league source with knowledge of the situation.

The 6’3″ 245 pounder is fast (4.5 in the 40 yard dash) and has played both outside linebacker and some defensive end with his hand on the ground. He isn’t without risks though. After an impressive Combine, Irvin was arrested on a Saturday night in Morgantown for allegedly beating up on a helpless sign at Jimmy John’s. The 24-year old faces destruction of property charges.

The Browns have been content to take chances on guys with character issues after interviewing them.

College Basketball Bullet Points: Butler and West Virginia in the Final Four

The Butler Bulldogs and West Virginia Mountaineers punched the first two tickets for the Final Four last night as the NCAA Tournament continues to wind down. Both teams pulled off the upsets of higher-seeded opponents to keep up with this March’s theme of anarchy and brackets explosion. With the Final Four scheduled for Indianapolis, it will also be a historical homecoming of sorts for the surprising Bulldogs.

Ohio State is out of the tournament now as well as the two other teams from the state in Xavier and Ohio. Despite that, there are still a lot of news-worthy items to discuss in relation to the ever-crazy college basketball world. Feel free to post your comments on the following or today’s schedule of games below. Tennessee takes on Michigan State at 2:20 pm while Duke plays Baylor at 5:05 pm, all on CBS:

  • So let’s get this straight: either Butler, Tennessee or Michigan State will play in the NCAA Tournament championship this season. Does that bother you? Does that make you want to destroy things? Yeah, that’s what I thought. [Read more...]

Big Ten Predictions for 2010: “Don’t get me wrong, it’s a big if.  But if a team from the Midwest earns a spot to the BCS National Championship Game in Glendale, Arizona, it will have what it takes to get the win.  It’s no secret that the team in the best position to make the MNC is Ohio State, who will almost certainly open the season in the Top 3 in the polls.  If the Buckeyes can handle an early out of conference showdown against a ranked Hurricanes club, and run the table in conference, they’ll be primed to return to the big dance.  If they get there, they’ll get even.” [Law Buckeye/Rivalry Esq.]

Buckeyes Blow Lead Against West Virginia

OSU WVU Lighty APThe Ohio State Buckeyes basketball team should have beaten #12 West Virginia over the weekend.  In the end, I think the collapse should have been avoidable.  The Buckeyes had a 14-point lead at one point.  They also carried a 12 point lead into halftime.  Ultimately, the Buckeyes ended up looking tired as their defense failed and they lost the ability to execute on the offensive end.

Buckeyes superstar Evan Turner had an off game.  He shot only 6-17 from the field for the game and committed four turnovers.  The problem seemed to me that his legs were gone in the second half as he recorded 40 minutes of playing time in the box score.  William Buford and David Lighty also played all 40 minutes.  Lighty also didn’t have a great game, while Buford went through multiple hot streaks on his way to leading the Bucks with 22 points on 9-13 shooting.
