Game 2: Now If Only He’d Start Hitting…

Caught up in all of the madness surrounding the Cavs tying the series with the Celtics was the double-dip between the Tribe and Blue Jays. You can scope out the thoughts on Game 1 here, as this will be more about the second contest and Asdrubal Cabrera doing something that we may never get the chance to see again – an unassisted triple play.
Obviously, it would have been a bit better had the Tribe actually won the game, but from a fan’s perspective it is still pretty cool. However, the fact that Cabrera made history will not do enough for Eric Wedge in terms of making up for the team’s lack of hitting.
“It’s a triple play,” snapped manager Eric Wedge after the game. “I’m not going to talk about it. We didn’t win the game.”
Wedge was upset over the Indians’ inability to hit Shaun Marcum and relievers B.J. Ryan (1-0) and Kelly Downs.
“Our approach was as poor, if not the poorest, I’ve seen here all year,” said Wedge. “There’s no excuse. We gave away at bats all night long. Their kid [Marcum] is a helluva pitcher, but we gave away at bats all night.”
In a season like we’ve endured thus far, I wouldn’t blame Eric Wedge whatsoever if he were to take the good with the bad. However, I’m very proud of his focus on the matter given the way that his team has simply been nonexistent at the plate. I mean, our pitchers threw 18 (Eighteen!) scoreless innings, and only won one of two games. I jokingly mentioned last week that Cliff Lee could throw a scoreless gem and we’d still lose. Turns out that it wasn’t too far-fetched after all.
For all of you “numbers” people, Lee still sits at 6-0. Yesterday’s game loweredhis ERA to 0.67 on the year with 44 strikeouts and four walks in 53.2 innings pitched. Cabrera ended up going 0-for-4 in the game with a strikeout. He’s hitting at a .190/.289/.267 clip. He’s hitting .095 against lefties. But he did record an unassisted triple play.
For those that are a fan of video captures, as well as home-team commentary, here’s a clip of the play thanks to Babes Love Baseball. Do you think Matt Underwood was excited?
There won’t be much time to dwell on the offensive struggles of yesterday. The Oakland A’s come to town tonight for the first of a three-game slate. Soon after Thursday’s afternoon game, the Tribe will pack their bags for a three-game stint in Cincinnati. Come Sunday, they will have played eight games in seven days. At least the final three will be in a “hitters” park. We could use it.

What a wasted effort for Lee. He pitched nine shutout innings and received nothing in return. What did they manage? Two hits? Disgusting.
Wedge’s response shows that he is not going to be distracted by personal feats and statistics-mongering. He keeps his mind on winning. We have to hope that the pressure he puts on his players pays off in the end.
Yes, the at-bats sucked, (looking at you Peralta). But please don’t let Jason Tyner ever play a game again.
I really like that Wedge had his mind on winning (and was fired up about it). I also really like watching that play. Good thing I am not in Wedge’s position so I can focus on the latter. God its good to be a fan.
I love how he totally called it at the crack of the bat.
