While We’re Waiting… Daugherty’s Debate, Gilbert Among the Best, Wedge…Not so Much

brad-daughertyWhile We’re Waiting aims to be the round-up of the recent WFNY-esque information for your morning viewing. Have something you think we should see? Send it to our tips email in the sidebar.

Brad Daugherty prefers the 1991-92 t-shirt: “And as LeBron James leads today’s Cavs toward what could be the franchise’s first NBA title, Daugherty is often asked how his team would fare against James’ team. “There’s no doubt about it,” Daugherty said with a hearty laugh. “We’d win by 20 or 30.”

Does he really believe that?

“No, but it’d be a heck of a game,” said Daugherty.” [ESPN Regional Media]

A little more thought on Braylon: “Was the sensational 2007 season an aberration? A one-time occurrence that most likely will never happen again?  Maybe, but that does not alter the fact Edwards still has the talent to produce if given the right atmosphere. All he needs is the right kind of coaching.  If what we are led to believe with Mangini is true, Edwards will receive that kind of coaching. And he will benefit from it.  Mangini is a stickler for the fundamentals and will not tolerate anything less from his players.” [Rich Passan/The OBR]

The Cleveland Indians were a trendy pick by many self-styled experts to not only win the mediocre AL Central this season, but to potentially win the American League pennant. However, after five weeks, the team has the worst record in not only the AL, but all of baseball. We’ve already seen Arizona Diamondback skipper Bob Melvin removed for a slow start in Phoenix, so it would not be capricious for Indians GM Mark Shapiro to bounce Eric Wedge as early as today. But not so fast: “GM Mark Shapiro admits things are bad with the Indians, but not bad enough to fire his manager. “What I can tell you is that I believe no one cares more about these players or this organization than Eric Wedge,” said Shapiro before Tuesday night’s game against Chicago. “I feel strongly that he’s making every effort to move this in a positive direction.” [Paul Hoynes/Plain Dealer]

Oh, gee….well, at least he cares.

If he cared so much he wouldn’t have thrown Sipp out there on back to back days last week

I care too….doesn’t mean I should manage the team.

The more I think about Wedge’s near-future job security, the more I wonder about the attendance factor. The Dolans have seemed financially over their heads since the beginning. Wonder if Paul Dolan will start getting desperate and look for something – anything – to act as defribillator paddles for this unconcious team. Not talkng about a rational in-season baseball move, but about a p.r. shot in the dark. If we are clearly out of it before the kiddies are even out of school these guys are going to take an unbelievable financial hit both in 2009 sales and in 2010 advance sales.

Congrats on the the love from the PD, moving on up.

Wedge may care, but his decision making skills make me think otherwise. I mean there are some areas where he doesn’t have a lot to work with, but putting the same lineups out there night after night and expecting different results is insane. Why not mix it up and put some of young guys in to try to shake things up a bit because worst thing that can happen now is that we lose, which we’ve shown we’re already capable of doing successfully.

[...] Scott mentioned in today’s WWW, Shappy also addressed the future of his beleaguered manager Eric Wedge.  It doesn’t sound [...]

    Thanks Brendon and Oppie.

For those of you who haven’t noticed, the PD has been running a blog roundup every morning for probably about 2 weeks now. There have been a number of links to us through the PD, which is great. Don’t be afraid to spread the word!

Just because Wedge is “making every effort” doesn’t mean it’s the right decision. I think it’s time to see what a new perspective might do for the clubhouse.

Using Shapiro’s logic Mother Teresa’s capacity for caring would have made her the greatest manager ever. I wonder if she would play LaPorta?
