Someone Has to Win the Central…

May 21, 2008Our feelings towards the coaching abilities of Eric Snow have been well-documented in these parts. Yesterday, Rock mentioned that a possible Snow retirement could even have a viable impact on what the Cavaliers can do come this off-season.
While some are hoping that Snow doesn’t retire so that his contract is a goldmine of the “expiring” fashion, it turns out that we may actually have some cap space to work with this off-season as early retirement is not out of the question. But why would Snow retire when he’s due a few million dollars ($7.3 million, to be exact) to do next to nothing? Well, because the Chicago Bulls are reportedly interested in interviewing the point guard to fill their vacant head coach position.
Bobcats coach Larry Brown wants Cleveland Cavaliers point guard Eric Snow on his staff, once Snow’s injury retirement becomes official.
But there’s a complication that would be very nice for Snow; an informed source says the Chicago Bulls want to interview him to be their head coach.
Bulls general manager John Paxson said he planned to spread a wide net in filling this job, and hiring Snow with no previous coaching experience would be just that. However, it demonstrates what a natural Snow would be as a coach.
I find the timing of this to be pretty intriguing, as we have a certain group of fans that think this very team could use a new head coach. We all know that Snow’s future in this league would be from the sidelines, but did anyone see it coming this soon?
Personally, I was hoping that if he took the early retirement, that we could make him a part of this coaching staff. But with the possible offer of a head coaching job – on a team with the first overall draft pick, mind you – perhaps Snow is well ahead of his time.
Chicago would be making a huge gamble to give the gig to a guy with zero coaching experience, but this could have a fairly big impact on our cap space for next season. Like most situations that we’ll be faced with this off-season, I’m a bit torn as to what I’d like to see happen. His expiring contract has been something that we’ve all looked forward to for quite some time. But given our cap space, and luxury tax situation, one has to wonder if Dan Gilbert would prefer to send Snow on his way – even if that “way” is to a division opponent.

Well, everyone knows he drew up the final play against the Wizards that won the Cavs game 1. Snow will make a very nice coach and I wanted him on the Cavs staff as well
it seems like him and Brown are great compliments. He can’t be worse offensively than brown.
Whatever happens to snow I don’t want him going to the bulls. They’re easily my least favorite team in basketball.
I word prefer him to be on the Cavs staff, but getting the 7.3 mil in cap room would be nice anyway we can get it.
I agree that Snow would be a great coach. I just don’t see him being the Bulls head coach. This man has been in the league for a long time, and is well respected. I just don’t see him leaving for the Bulls. I think going to the Bobcats with Larry Brown would be his best option. He has good offensive instincts and the Bobcats are a very offensive minded team. I would love for him to stay on as the Cavs staff, but anywhere he goes, im sure he’ll be happy.
[…] a little earlier than expected, I begin my life as the vicarious spender. So, when I read this on WFNY today, I quickly became exuberant. It also didn’t take me very long to figure out what to do with […]
We should just keep him as an assistant. No reason in letting him go! And I would rather see him as our head coach instead of Mike Brown.
I think we are so far over the salary cap that Snow’s 7.3 mil wouldn’t put us under it and if it did it would not do it by much. That said, Snow will make a better coach than Mike Brown, and I’d be pretty pissed if Chicago got him
