Deep (In The Q!) Thoughts From Game 2
May 23, 2009Tribe 7, Reds 6 – Bullpen Picks Up Huff
May 24, 2009While We’re Waiting aims to be the round-up of the recent WFNY-esque information for your morning viewing. Have something you think we should see? Send it to our tips email in the sidebar.
This video started to go viral yesterday afternoon and had even made it onto ESPN by the evening. It is great theater catching the crew’s reaction just seconds after head anchor Leon Bibb invokes a “waiting for next year” feeling. [Yahoo/Ball Don’t Lie]

The Nuggets and Lakers weighed in on the Shot: “I was sitting at a counter, a greasy spoon I have in my soup and a greasy burger,” Jackson said. “The guy next to me said, ‘Aw, man, Orlando’s going to go up 2-0 and Cleveland’s going to go down in the series. You want to see Orlando? I said, ‘You wrote off this guy. He can still make a shot from almost anywhere.’ And he did. That’s the way he is. James is just a terrific player.” [SI.com/AP]

The T-shirt market which has been created off of LBJ is astounding and as Darren Rovell points out, it did not take long for them to capitalize on his latest heroics. [Darren Rovell/Ebay]

A good analysis on how the Tribe got to this point of constant roster turnover: “I have one complaint about the way Shapiro put together the bullpen: He made certain he had three starters at Triple-A — Laffey, Sowers (even though he hasn’t worked out) and Huff — with the credentials to fill in if someone got hurt or pitched badly. But where was the bullpen depth? Signing minor-league free agents and veterans with erratic histories who had been tossed overboard by other clubs was only asking for trouble. The other change, foreshadowed in spring training, was Wedge’s determination to have almost everyone — save Grady Sizemore — play every position on the field. I don’t know where this came from, but it hasn’t worked.” [Sheldon Ocker/Akron Beacon Journal]

Dan Gilbert is attempting to raise both the Cavs’ and LeBron’s exposure: “The direct impact of the move is securing the future of the franchise, which has been in a minority ownership flux for the last couple years as it loses millions in attempting to build a championship-quality team around James. It will not only mean an injection of capital but will open the Cavs to business in China. The move, which has been kept mostly secret in America, is being supported by the NBA as they have encouraged development in China. The other effect, which is surely the more interesting side to Cavs fans, is how vital this new link could be for James — providing a huge tie-in with an economy James is eager to tap.” [Brian Windhorst/Cleveland Plain Dealer]

Phil Jackson does not refuse to praise James openly, and that is in contrast to Kobe, who in typical fashion seemed to dismiss the shot as banal: “he got a look, he’s gotta make it” (or something to that effect). That being said, I have already had my fill of the Kobe-LeBron discussion. After catching some of yesterday’s Lakers-Nuggets game, I told a friend that we could expect more Kobe-LeBron hype claiming that Kobe was aiming to one-up LeBron by playing well. And that’s exactly the kind of rubbish that I found under the name of Wojnarowski this morning:
“Kobe Bryant did his best to one-up LeBron James with his own big night vs. the Nuggets.” Yeah, right. Bryant wasn’t actually playing against the team from Denver that was standing on the court defending him, he was more worried about
a guy sitting on a couch in Akron, Ohio, and was just kind of using the Nuggets players to seek revenge against that guy in Akron.”
Sheesh. How stupid do they take us to be?
Actually, LeBron should be in Florida, but you get the point!
I find it hilarious that they quoted George Karl as being sympathetic towards JVG.
actually if you look into it Kobe said “it was a hell of a shot” right before he goes on to say “He got a good look, that’s what you want to do.”
people still subscribe to SI?
OK, Steve. That’s fair enough.
@Clevo LOL!
Why is Dan Gilbert’s business venture with China not creating significant buzz in the NBA world? This potential move is extremely signifcant and relevant. While Gilbert currently has the playing rights to the best player on the globe, he is striking while the iron is hot and creating for himself, lebron and the city of cleveland, an opportunity that seems unmatched by any domestic venture.
To think that the Cavs have the opportunity to sign Lebron this summer, we clearly need to offer him more than just a maximum contract. His goal is to be the first billionaire athlete, and now Dan Gilbert is creating the vehicle in which he can accomplish this.
Windhorst’s article even states that the NBA is trying to help facilitate this deal. Instead of the NBA trying to invest in China, they are encouraging the Chinese to invest in the NBA.
All said, this truly gives Gilbert a great opportunity to sign Lebron in 2009, or a better sell on the Cavs in 2010, aside from just waving him a maximum deal and playing on his Cleveland loyalties.
I gotta tell you…the reaction in the video was nothing compared to the reaction to that shot at my house 😉
