Browns Sign Roderick Hood to 1-Year Deal

According to Tony Grossi (who was backed up by PFT,) the Cleveland Browns have signed Roderick Hood to a one year contract.  Hood started for Arizona in the Super Bowl this year after spending his first four seasons in Philly.  He is 27 years old and I am pretty sure Mangini and Kokinis must have told him that he will be able to compete for a starting corner position.

According to Grossi’s report, Hood visited with the Bengals, Lions, Bears, and Rams.  The only way I am guessing he would come sign in Cleveland on a one year deal over those other opportunities is that the Browns must have told him he would have a chance to earn a starter’s spot.  Hood certainly will be playing for a longer-term contract this year and it won’t do him any good to play in a place where he won’t have an opportunity to be 1st or 2nd on the CB depth chart.

Whether or not he will be able to beat out McDonald or Wright, this should be a big upgrade over the warm corpses that populated the cornerback depth chart for the Browns last season. (cough Terry Cousin cough.)

Ah, Terry Cousins was the self-proclaimed “best nickel back in the NFL.”

    We hardly knew ye.

The secondary already looks a LOT better on paper this year than it did going into last year. Last year it was Wright, Holly, McDonald, Cousin, Adams

This year: Wright, Hood, McDonald, Ivy, Poteat

    I’d say that’s a significant upgrade.

I would say correction on the last year. It actually turned out to be Wright, McDonald, Cousin, Daniels, Adams, then some UFAs.

I really liked Jones, but overall his loss and the addition of Elam, Hood, and Ivy I think we made some big improvements. This is one of the best offseason moves by the new regime.

the list of teams he visited shows how hard it is to be successful with out quality CB’s

@ bobby – I’m referring to what they went into camp with, not what ultimately occurred…

In any event, the secondary was crap before they went to camp and was worse by the time the season started. I think everyone knew that was going to be a potential problem going in.

This year, it seems like this group may have a chance of being respectable.

Personally I believe the secondary will be fine if, and this is a big if, there is any semblance of a pass rush.

yeah I am with Art on this one. It doesn’t matter who is back there covering, if we give the opposing QBs all day to throw it won’t matter. This is a good group who could be better than good if we can get a pass rush. I am hoping DC Ryan will figure out a way to get Wimbley back on track and get some people to the QBs. If that happens, with an easy schedule, and a full season of Quinn with actual WRs to throw to, we could double last year’s win total.

Great signing, now we just need to fix our defensive front seven.

Good signing, and I think this is one of the first Mankok moves I’ve actually been genuinely excited about. Still a long way to go to fix the D but this is a step in the right direction.

Any way you look at Wright Hood and McDonald you have to like it. I also read something on the PD site that Mangini has been moving Wimbley around on this D and not just on the right, in hoping he can learn more then one move. If Viekune can help out with the pass rush that would be great. The DL is solid with lots of depth, so all hopes are for the LB core.
