Indians Trade Season Under Way?
The Indians have made a couple of moves-
Today the Indians outrighted RHP GREG AQUINO to AAA Columbus…Aquino was designated for assignment on June 19 and was 1-2 w/a 4.50ERA in 10 relief appearances for Cleveland (16.0IP, 13H, 8ER, 15BB, 11K)… INF MICHAEL AUBREY to the Baltimore Orioles in exchange for a player to be named… Aubrey was hitting .292 (62-212) with 27 runs scored, 16 doubles, a triple, 5HR and 29RBI in 57 games with the AAA Columbus Clippers
Alright, I admit Michael Aubrey wasn’t the first player I figured would go. Especially since they are getting the infamous PTBNL in return. Buster Olney contends that the Indians are ready to put Mark DeRosa on the next UPS truck for a young pitcher, and I figured he might be the first to go, if not Carl Pavano.
On a positive note, Carmona might be ready to return to the team soon. Whether or not he will be effective again remains to be seen.
EDIT from TD: This just in…
The Cleveland Indians today announced they have acquired RHP Jose Veras from the New York Yankees for cash considerations. Veras will join the Indians 25-man roster over the coming days with a corresponding roster move being announced at that time.
Veras, 28, went 3-1 with a 5.96 ERA (25.2IP, 23H, 17R/ER, 14BB, 18K) in 25 appearances out of the bullpen for the Yankees before being designated for assignment on June 16th. He limited Major League batters to a .235 (23-98) average against, including a mark of .180 (11-50) against right-handed batters. Prior to being designated, 9 of his last 12 appearances with New York were scoreless (8.0IP, 12H, 5R/ER, 4BB, 6K).
Ugh…More garbage for the pen. The Yankees, desperate for useful bullpen guys, even gave up on this guy. Should be perfect for us.

Another Shapiro first-round pick bites the dust…
June 24th, 2009 at 3:37 pm
Uh…so we gave away Aubrey? WTF Indians….
You couldn’t package him up with someone and get at least a named player back? …I hate Shapiro. I really do.

I don’t get giving away Aubrey either. It was becoming clear that there was no spot for him organizationally, but I don’t think that merits simply giving him away. Then again, Brantley was a PTBNL, so maybe Shapiro did get something…

Seriously, did Shapiro witness the Dolans murder a hooker on a trip to Mexico?
How does he still have a job?
June 24th, 2009 at 4:01 pm
who would have thought it would be the Tribe as the Cleveland team with multiple trades today?
June 24th, 2009 at 4:02 pm
@4 PTBNL is usually from a short list of prospects. without knowing that list or if the final decision will be ours or the orioles, it is hard to determine the value of this trade.
which is exactly how MLB GM’s like it.

lol @ 5
but seriously, I am not sure he could pick a worse bullpen if he tried

was Aubrey the guy who slipped and fell playing bball and ruptured a ligament in his knee?
June 24th, 2009 at 4:36 pm
I’d like to know how we went to the YANKEES for pitching…theyre just as bad as we are in regards to pitching…and this guy doesnt seem much better as far as bb/k ratio.
joy. rapture.
thus begins the fire sale. wonder if we can just combine the nationals, the pirates, and the indians and make ONE decent team out of the group…

saw this on the article on espn…made me chuckle…
“Being traded from the Yankees for cash is kind of like being traded for a hot dog.”
June 24th, 2009 at 4:41 pm
@9: That was third base prospect Matt … something, and he slipped chasing a Mexican hooker, or maybe Paul Dolan.
With Aubrey gone, where in this organization are they going to find another slow, bad field first baseman-type who makes decent contact but shows little power?
June 24th, 2009 at 4:59 pm
@12 — OOOH OOOH OOOH I KNOW I KNOW!!!!
GARKO!!!!
yay!!!!
June 24th, 2009 at 6:13 pm
@9: I believe his name was Matt Whitney?
Also, hate to burst everyone’s bubble…but we won’t be getting back diddly for Aubrey. Minor-league first basemen who hit .280 in AAA with 15 HR power don’t really command much of a return.
He’ll go down as just another sad mark on in what is really an awful draft track record for this club.
Veras should fit in well with the rest of our bullpen…he was someone who had success last year but has completely lost it this year!
