Browns Officially Sign Center Alex Mack

The Akron Beacon Journal is reporting that the Browns have officially signed first-round draft choice Alex Mack to a five-year contract.  The guaranteed figure is in the $12 million range – less than half of what the Jets were forced to pay Mark Sanchez.

Mack will join fellow signed rookies James Davis, Don Carey, Kaluka Maiava and Coye Francies in minicamp as they await the veterans to arrive at the end of the month.  In the credit where credit is due department, we would be remiss if we didn’t count this as a minor victory for the Kokinis/Mangini staff during their first year.  Now, let’s get those second-rounders signed, as the wide receiver situation is definitely one that needs to be decided come the start of the season.

(Update:  Earlier reported numbers have been now updated to reflect a guaranteed sum of approximately $9 million)

After giving Mack an absurd $12M guarantee (for what normally is a second round center pick), Robiskie and the other second rounders won’t be folding anytime soon. Mike Furry and the great David Patton will be exciting fans during practice runs.

12m guarantee isn’t that bad, there were two C taken after Mack in the first round and they will probably get a little bit less than that

Despite where he could have / would have been picked, he went at #21 and we’ll be paying him as such. If he ends up starting over Fraley (hopefully) it’ll end up being quite reasonable, but even if he busts, I’d much rather be paying a $12M bust than a $30-40 for a top 5 pick who still might not pan out.

PFT mis-reported the numbers the first time around. It isn’t 12.2 million guaranteed, (thankfully.) It is a 12.2% increase over Sam Baker, the offensive tackle who was drafted 21st last year.

So, just running some rough math, Alex Mack’s deal is $8,960,000 guaranteed over 5 years vs. $8,000,000 guaranteed dollars last year.

I am quite satisfied with that number, I think. I would consider it maybe about a 2% premium to get Alex Mack signed early?

I’m just happy he is in camp in time, he should have every opportunity to win the starting job

Looking forward to the Return of the Mack.
