Big Ten Media Days – Surprise! Tressel doesn’t say much
Written By: Denny | Category: Ohio State Buckeyes | Comments: 3Though not on the same level as a pregame interview (”we want to establish the run early, so we can open up the pass game later in the game. It’s always a tough Big Ten football game when you’re playing in _____ Stadium”), The Senator did his best politician impression, once again. Big Ten Media Days started yesterday in Chicago, where the media descended upon the Big Ten coaches in an attempt to stir the pot before the season starts. It’s not the mindblowing circus of the SEC Media Days, but they do tend to put on a good show.
Though nobody inquired about any of the coaches’ premarital activities, there were a few good sound bites. Pat Fitzgerald led off the with a quality line about voting for Tim Tebow. Many were impressed with Minnesota coach Tim Brewster’s ability to talk about anything to anyone – and he claims to have the best WR in the nation in Eric Decker (Julio Jones who?). Ron Zook wore a metal suit. Brett Bielema has an Iowa tattoo on his calf that “seemed like a good idea when he was 19″. Rich Rodriguez is a big fan of QB Tate Forcier. Pur-don’t coach Danny Hope did his best Joe Tiller Mustache impression. JoePa doesn’t use “tweetle-doo“. Mark Dantonio says Sparty needs to step up and beat Penn State. Kirk Ferentz reminded us that the last time the Big Ten appeared to be down the Buckeyes won the National Championship and 4 Big 10 teams finished in the top 13.
I tell you all of this because honestly, Tress said nothing of consequence for the entire 10 minutes he had the podium. Some people have a gift to be breathtakingly vanilla. Freshman RB Jamaal Berry will not be disciplined for his pending misdemeanor marijuana charge. Terrelle Pryor likely won’t be a team captain as a sophomore. Aside from that, Big Jim talked about the need for the conference to improve in bowl play etc.
The only real gem from Tress so far hasn’t been at his press conference, but was mentioned today by Pat Forde on Twitter:
Scary stat of the day: Tressel said Terrelle Pryor was electronically timed at 4.33 in the 40. Freak.
That’s quacktastic!
More news may be coming in the next week from Chicago, but I expect that Coach Tressel will keep things rather quiet. However, we can always hang around and see what Tim Brewster has to say. Either way, we’re a day closer to college football season. Hoorah!

i was watching allen iverson’s high school football videos yesterday. total domination. im thinkin we might see some of that from Pryor this year
Though I don’t necessarily disagree with the decision, I’m floored that Jamaal Berry won’t be suspended for any games.
That being said, the charge is still pending, so we shall see..
I think there’s a very good chance that he’s suspended. The fact that the charges were reduced from felony to misdemeanor means that the team can wait a bit on the suspension, if it occurs. Wouldn’t be surprised to see him out a game or two though.
Not sure how much it’ll matter, as long as Boom and Saine are healthy.
