MLB Trade Rumors: Cliff Lee Traded to Philadelphia (Official)

Written By:  Scott   |  Category:  Cleveland Indians   |  Comments:   130

It all started with a tip from Enrico at The 700 Level, and appears to be finalized thanks to Jeff Blair who covers the Toronto Blue Jays.

Cy Young winner Cliff Lee has reportedly been dealt to the Philadelphia Phillies for RHP Carlos Carrasco, SS Jason Donald and catcher Lou Marson.

Awaiting further confirmation.? Will update as we can.

(Update 11:34AM: Phillies beat writer Todd Zolecki reports that along with Carrasco, Donald and Marson were not in today’s lineup.)

(Update 11:57AM: FoxSports reports that they believe the centerpiece of a deal would involve RHP Jason Knapp – a top 10 prospect as well, but the Dodgers are also making a push for Lee)

(Update 12:10PM: Cliff Lee claims to still be an Indian on 950AM – Philly’s ESPN affiliate.  We have re-titled our post until further confirmation.)

(Update 1:45PM: Reports are now adding Ben Francisco’s name to the mix with Lee.  Deal on the table as of now is Lee and Francisco for Carrasco, Knapp, Marson and Donald.  FoxSports claims that deal is now official pending medical reviews.)

Analysis of the players that will be sent to Cleveland will be coming later.  Thank you all for hanging out with us during the “still pending” phase.

Lou Marson being a catcher has me thinking about Victor Martinez disappearing too.

    That makes me sad.

This seems like a disappointing package. Carrasco ain’t exactly lighting up AAA this year.

Philllies get Lee without giving up either of their 2 best prospects. Genius!

Yes, even as a “Shapiro trade apologist” I don’t quite get this move.

    7. July 29, 2009

So some argued that Carrasco was the Phillies top pitching prospect before Drabek wowed everyone this season…he seems to have had a rough go of it in AAA this year, though his BB/SO ratio and K/9 ratio still seems to be solid. So…I guess he’s OK.

Marson and Donald, though…hmm. Marson seems like a nice enough player…a high average, high walks, low K, low power hitter who seems like he could be a decent cog in the lineup…but don’t we kinda already have a super-stud hitting catcher in AA?

Donald just seems like a future utility infielder to me, and he’s been *awful* at AAA this season (.236 with 1 HR in 208 ABs).

I’ll say it again…this seems like a disappointing haul.

  • 8. July 29, 2009

Considering we traded the reigning Cy Young last year as a three month rental and got two MUCH better prospects, this is disappointing at best as it is currently being reported.

  • 9. July 29, 2009

    Mark Shapiro hates the Indians.

He’s set this team back at least a decade. It’s so damn sad.

I just am ashamed of how poorly he handled this trade and this team.

At least when Art Modell killed the team, they were only gone for three years. With Shapiro, it’ll be like 10.

This trade seems forced by money more than anything else…and says to me that they don’t think they can contend even next year. So as much as I blame Shapiro for a seemingly cruddy deal, I blame the Dolans even more for what seems like he told Shapiro to just get whatever Philly offered.

Very sad. This trade doesn’t make me want to buy Tribe tix when I’m in town next year (or while I’m in town now for that matter).

  • 13. July 29, 2009

I make myself sad, with my future-predicting abilities. :(

We could have gotten so much more for the reigning CY Young winner! The only 2 people we need to get rid of is Eric Wedge and Mark Shapiro. If the get rid of Victor there is going to be a riot in cleveland. Why would you get rid of your Ace? YOur suppose to build a team around him. The Indians will suck for another 3 to 4 years!

  • 16. July 29, 2009

Actually I know Jason Donald. Our fathers coached together, I babysat him and we were ballboys together when we were younger. He was the most productive and clutch hitter on the Olympic team. Yeah he struggled in AAA, but up until then his average rose with every level he went up.

This is actually the first year in his professional career that he’s struggled. He’s not quite the power guy, but he can get on base and he is a clutch hitter. Really good defensive player as well. Peralta may be on the way out too, he may be able to fetch a good price.

  • 17. July 29, 2009

God I hate what MLB has become. No season tix for me ever again. I just can’t support this anymore.

  • Michael
    18. July 29, 2009

This is is not the package I envisioned for Cliff Lee, but it does not look bad. Carrasco has not done well in AAA, but he was tremendous upside. He is projected to be in the top of the rotation. I look at it this way, did you think the deal sending Colon to Montreal was good at the time. Just give it time and see how they do. Realistically, I do not think any could expect Lee to re-sign with the Indians. He will want a huge contract, which Cleveland just can’t offer.

  • 19. July 29, 2009

Jason Knapp, Trevor May, Jason Donald, and Carlos Carrasco is the final deal.

  • Anon Imus
    20. July 29, 2009

This is only a rumor based on the aformentioned players being scratched from a game today. It does not make any sense whatsoever, given that after Carrasco, we picked up a catcher, a position we are loaded in, and a no-power utility indfielder. Didn’t Shapiro say he wants pitching and more pitching? Hell, he got more for Mark frikin DeRosa. I think there must be more here than meets the eye or possibly a third team involved. WTFNY breaking news on rumors — I don’t buy it — just hype reporting.

This isn’t completely the MLB’s fault? I’ve been on that bandwagon since ~2000, but have recently re-evaluated. This team will go nowhere under Dolan. Without a new owner (or drastically altered finances) nothing will change.

It’s MLBs fault that we can’t go sign big name free agents. I’m not excited about that. But it’s Dolan’s fault that we have retained 0% of the big name talent over the last 6+ years.

Actually, Michael Taylor is in the line up today. Sadly, Matt LaPorta is still in the Columbus line up as well instead of heading on a plane to Anaheim. :(

I hope this is a bum rumor because this package of Phils sucks. Other than Marson, who won’t hit for much power, there isn’t a pitcher in this group having a decent year.

Do we have any real sources here? I love the site and read every article, but to be the first place I’ve seen anywhere saying this is a done deal based off of a few other blogs/twitter posts, I’m going to hold off accepting this as fact for a while.

  • 35. July 29, 2009

We had received word on a potential trade and it is breaking news indeed that something is going down. Carrasco, Taylor, Donald and Marson all did not play today for Class AAA Lehigh Valley and our initial reports stated something was becoming official.

Lee will end up going somewhere very soon here, and it certainly looks like it will be Philadelphia.

  • mgbode
    36. July 29, 2009

Umm….before we completely lambast this trade…let us first see it become official (phillies also looking to make a trade for a baltimore reliever…some of guys could go to them)….

and yeah, I wanted Happ, Knapp or Mays with Carrasco, but we’ll see what it ends up as

and it’s not like these are bad prospects…haven’t seen these guys play much, but here’s what I could find…let us hope Baseball America is accurate with their rankings.

apparently, Shapiro subscribes to Baseball America because his moves seem to mirror their rankings….not sure if that is good or bad, but

Carrasco – #2 phillies prospect by Baseball America (#1 last year…Drabek #1 now) hard throwing pitcher who doesn’t walk many….ERA over 5 at AAA though and is only 6-9 because of it. Could very well end up a good middle rotation guy though if he keeps up the 112/38 K/BB ratio.

Jason Donald – #4 phillies prospect by Baseball America. extremely good arm, below average speed makes him a Jeter-like defender at SS. Very well could move to 3B. Had been tearing up every level of minor league ball offensively until he got to AAA this year where he has struggled. Good doubles-power.

Lou Marson – #3 Phillies prospect by Baseball America. played some with the Phillies this year and struggled at the plate…though that is where he will make his living. No real power, but good line drive hitter and hits for average. Defensively, he blocks the plate well and has an above average arm but apparently was switched to catcher his last year in college so has limited experience there that sometimes shows. D’Aunard in the system (lower level though) makes him expendable for Philly (many consider D’Aunard a better prospect).

Bonus note: Marson and Donald both started for Team USA.

  • 37. July 29, 2009

Admittedly, the initial title was off-base – I do believe that a deal is done, just awaiting confimation, as mentioned within the original post. Apologies if it was misleading.

  • Michael
    38. July 29, 2009

It is being reported by FOXSports, the deal is centered around Jason Knapp, with Carrasco, Marson and Donald being the other pieces. Not a bad hull in my mind. A lot of upside with these players. Not really sure why they ANOTHER catcher, when they have Martinez, Shoppach, Giminez, Toregas, Santana, etc…

  • 39. July 29, 2009

As a Phillies fan, I’d honestly be surprised if the deal as reported above was the deal that finally happens. It’s obviously not done yet, but considering the packages Toronto is asking for in exchange for Halladay, I feel like the Indians a) are getting the clear short end of the stick, or b) the offers haven’t been rolling in like they might have expected.

If, on the other hand, this is close to the deal that actually happens, take some solace – at least you’re not trading Lee to the White Sox like it sounds like Toronto is ready to move Halladay to Boston. Would be the clear front-runner for Stupid Move of the Decade.

@ 18: Excellent point. I can still remember Paul Hoynes writing of the Colon trade: “Bartolo was given away for a bunch of players you’ve never heard of.”

What a tool. Could he have done a little research before making such a statement?

I’ll take a wait-and-see attitude with this one.

  • 41. July 29, 2009

Knapp’s profile has just skyrocketed recently. He was a second-round pick out of a New Jersey high school in 2008 and is still incredibly young (August 31, 1990).

Went 3-1 with a 2.61 ERA in seven games (six starts) for the GCL affiliate of the Phillies last season after signing. This season with Lakewood he is having an unfortunate year (just like T.J. House with Lake County) as he is 2-7 with a decent 4.01 ERA in 17 starts.

He would probably finish the year with Lake County and begin next season with Kinston before probably finishing with Akron in 2010 at the ripe young age of 20.

  • JD
    42. July 29, 2009

I don’t know much about the players listed in a potential deal but I think its fair to say that any reasonable trade for Cliff isn’t going to get us a #1 starter for next year.

It’s depressing to think about what the rotation will look like next season. Which begs the question, is there any point to pay attention for the next year and a half?

Small consolation to you guys, but there’s been a lot of good buzz on Knapp among Phillies fans. The fact that he’s only 18 probably puts a few years between him and the Tribe, but he’s got all the tools to be the real deal.

I live in Philly, and I root ardently for both the Indians and Phillies.

I like this deal for both clubs. The only piece I don’t understand is Lou Marson.

Donald – He will likely be a solid middle infielder. Jamey Carroll just isn’t going to cut it. Will he ever hit 30 homers and bat .350? No, but adding solid pieces isn’t a bad idea.

Marson – A good singles and doubles hitter at catcher, but they have Santana, so I don’t really get why they did this. Maybe they can flip him for something else.

Carrasco – Kind of a headcase, but maybe a change of scenery will be good for him. Can be a solid third starter down the road.

Knapp – The key to the deal. Whether you like it or not, the Indians were NOT going to contend next year. They just weren’t. Look at the bullpen. Look at the starting pitching. It wasn’t going to happen.

This guy is 19 and struck out 111 in 85 innings in Single-A. Disregard the ERA and the win-loss record, as those don’t really matter much at this level. The guy has the stuff. Hopefully he is the future No. 1 this team needs.

The bottom line is that the Indians need a couple years to get back to playoff-caliber, and Shapiro has a good plan to do it. Get rid of Wedge and start over.

Since I root for the Phillies, too, though, I will love watching Lee pitch here, and hopefully he can bring them another World Series. He is the kind of guy that deserves it.

Wow…can a whole team be known as Mr. Irrelevant? Complain about broken economics if you want, but this organization has no imagination. I’ve already read a few comments comparing the Tribe to the moribund, money-dumping Pirates. I really hope that’s not the case…if so Dolan needs to sell the team to a young Gilbert-like hotshot w/ a huge ego and pockets to match. This is just sad…the Tribe’s now the third horse in this town. Nobody’s gonna go to games, which means Dolan won’t have the money to spend in the future. That’s an ass backwards way to run a business.

No much negativity. Remember: if we hit on just 5 or 6 of all of these promising prospects, and if those guys all agree to take moderate money in multi-year extensions and waive arbitration, and the planets all correctly align one year, we will compete again for a season. Until free agency looms.
Will one of you please patent the cure for the common cold and buy this team?

imagine if the Browns had gone to the Superbowl twice in the last 14 years….and the AFC championship another handful of times….

along with the most recent time being just a mere 2 years ago.

do you think we would have people calling them the most pathetic organization in professional sports?

shapiro has done a horrendous job drafting….he has done a horrendous job scouting relievers (FA and trades)

however, this trade netted 4/10 top PHillies prospects (baseball america)….

if we kept Cliff Lee…we would have gotten 2 1st rounders (at most)…do you trust Shapiro to make those picks? you can say he will be gone, but he might not be.

amazing the negativity and vitrol in this thread…..this is MLB ecomomics…the rich rob from the poor and the poor have to hope they can scrap together enough young talent to win a WS before they get too expensive. it’s just how it is, unfortunately.

I am so pissed off I bought two beers at a game earlier this season. I contributed to this P.O.S. organization.

PLEASE do not buy tickets to see this product. I cannot wait to see some of the crowds for weekday games in September.

They are beyond garbage right now.

We’re worse than the Pirates and the Royals.

Is Mark Shapiro on drugs? Seriously.

  • 98. July 29, 2009

Why not wait until next year??? They could have gotten the same pile of crap.

You are highly delusional if you think any of these “prospects” are going to amount to anything.

How many new season tickets will the Indians sell in 2010? 12? 9? 7?

@ #72 – that’s garbage. In 2007, they had all that extra playoff revenue, and look at the team from 2008! It’s not the fans’ fault that the GM, manager and owner are colluding to fail.

    102. July 29, 2009

after all is said and done…if the indians started winning tomorrow, and continued to win into next year, people wouldnt complain about trades…winning is paramount, losing breeds anger…who likes to lose? winning puts fans in the seats, losing keeps them away…winning with prospects is how this team needs to play to win…youre not going to see anymore guys that will play their entire career here…just not gonna happen…

@85 – “the Cavs blew the lid off the economy issue” because the Cavs have one of (if not THE) most visible star in the game and an international marketing force. To claim that’s anywhere near comparable to the Tribe in terms of economics, or even how the two games are even marketed is an extreme joke.

mgbode – Why would anyone go to games or buy the merchandise? Who’s jersey should I buy that I won’t have to replace at the next trade deadline? Why go to a game when the front office has already given up on this season, AND the next season?

Until Dolan leaves (which probably wont happen for a long time, and even after he does he says that he’s giving the team to his kids) we won’t stand a chance.

I will say one thing that is relevant. I would feel alot better about this move if the organization as a whole had proven consistent in its development of players over the years. We certainly have had grand successes such as CC and Sizemore, Martinez, etc., but many of our draftee’s and prospects have been mismanaged badly, especialy over the last few seasons. Even if we got something worthwile out of this trade (which is certainly a topic for debate), there is the very real potential for the goofballs running this ship to ruin these guys.

i dont see how an organization with a manager who favors veterans can succeed if all he has to work with is prospects and old mediocre players…that doesnt seem like a recipe for success…

    112. July 29, 2009

@106 – you’re right…why aren’t we fighting for a playoff berth still…why is Shapiro throwing in the towel on this season when we could pull off a Rockies like miracle winning 21/22 games.

I go to some games because it’s nice to go to the ballpark and enjoy a game…see the young kids that Shapiro is now forcing Wedge to play (what other option does he have?). I go to games because I’m a fan of the Tribe and always will be. I go because we are a small market team and it’s needed.

but, I’ll see the rest of you back next year or the year after when we are competing for a playoff spot (we are in the AL Cental afterall). and I’ll just nod and smile when EVERYONE says that they were a true fan who still rooted for the team in the bad times.

@103: who is the big marketable star of the Milwaukee Brewers? What about the Tigers – what superstar gives them their ability to afford that huge payroll? OK, the baseball system is more difficult for owners of mid-market teams who aren’t mega-rich. There’s no success for the “family-run business” model like in the NFL. But if we had an owner with serious juice we would be competing, like Milwakee and Detroit.

who’s not rooting for them? i want them to win as much as anyone else…

because I cant afford to dish out 100 bucks to watch a mediocre team managed by a guy who played David Delucci over top prospects, that means im not a fan?

am i not allowed to complain and whine about the team’s makeup, when clearly, everyone in the league sees the same problems i do? that makes me not a fan?

because you are sitting in the seat at the game because you choose to spend your money in that fashion doesnt make you any more a fan than anyone else…ive been to spring training with the Tribe numerous times, I’ve gone to their minor league games (all but kinston), and I support the team by buying merchandise, but to say youre a “true” fan because you sit in a seat is pretty off-base…pun intended…
