Indians Roster Update: Carmona and Crowe Get the Call

Written By:  Scott   |  Category:  Cleveland Indians   |  Comments:   27

For those that were expecting Matt LaPorta to finally get the nod with Ben Francisco now calling Philadelphia home, think again.

In his evening press conference, Mark Shapiro stated that Trevor Crowe and Fausto Carmona will get the call from Columbus to take the spots of Francisco and Cliff Lee. Crowe’s ability to play center field will keep LaPorta in Columbus for a little while longer.

In 166 ABs with the Tribe, Crowe has hit .169/.250/.215 with three doubles and a stolen base. Carmona is 2-6 with an ERA north of seven. However, with the Columbus Clippers, he had an ERA of 3.55, a WHIP of 1.15 and walked only six batters in 33 innings.

I guess this means that Fausto Carmona is now our “ace” starting pitcher. Get pumped, Tribe fans.

Honest question for those more knowledgeable than I am in this situation…

I know we were screaming when LaPorta got an early season call up, sat on the bench, got sent back down and wasted an option and/or an arbitration year. Is there any legitimate contract advantage at this point to waiting out the month of August and bringing him up with the September call-ups? Or are we just spinning our wheels here?

  • 4. July 29, 2009

The arbitration deal is service time. I believe it only would have ruined said arbitration if he would have stayed up here the entire time. Since he only played in a handful of games, he should be alright from that standpoint.

The issue is that since we traded away Gutierrez instead of Francisco this offseason, we have no ligitimate backup centerfielder. Enter Trevor Crowe. Choo tried CF and it didn’t go well.

The team seams dead set on him playing first base. However, if they would not have called up Marte and slotted him at first, they would have lost him at the end of the year. Giving him a shot with the big boys ensures that he can at least try out for a roster spot next season. If Marte doesn’t make the final cut, he has to be released as he is out of options.

I assume the team sees Michael Brantley as the left fielder of the future and does not want to put LaPorta in a spot that won’t be his every day position. But it seems that we won’t find out until the rosters expand in September.

Crowe gets the bat sawed off his hands by major league pitching……..this is a joke. Something is amiss with LaPorta………

Shapiro’s presser was an embarrassment, totally disingenuous. Here he has the gonads to AGAIN tell Cleveland that this rebuild/teardown will put the team on the map for year over year championship runs……exactly as he said in 2002. His nose grew with each sentence…….simply pathetic, disgusting.

It’s your dollar……….give it to Dolan/Shapetti if you want. Just know it’s the neighbor’s huge house with the furniture sale; first the furnature then the house. Dolan’s are cashing out their assets and then they will sell the team with nary an asset left.

    Cashout.

Isis- I rarely agree with your negativity, but the presser was a huge joke. He essentially ended questioning simply to avoid any more criticism.

I’ve tried to stay positive with all the trades the past two seasons, and to be honest, I understand why we are making the trades. I also don’t have too much of a problem with the players we have received in return. The problem I am having is who we keep bringing up. Marte had a huge chance last year and blew it. Crowe had an extended look this year and wasn’t ready. Why not give someone else a chance to take the bull by the horns? Giminez has had a long look and he hasn’t produced, but at least he’s out-hitting Shoppach. To be fair to Giminez, he is playing out of position. Why not give him a chance behind the plate instead of throwing Shoppach out there? Let’s see if Giminez can handle the catching duties when Victor plays first. Why not give LaPorta, Brantley, and Brown a chance at an extended look? This is the perfect opportunity to see these guys for 2 months straight so you know what you have going into next season. Are Crowe, Shoppach, and Marte really in our future plans? If so, we are worse off than I thought. Simply mind-numbing.

Shocked Shapiro had the guts to even have a press conference after that awful trade. I wonder how WTAM will defend this disaster.

  • 10. July 29, 2009

Did anybody throw a shoe at Shapiro during the presser?

    I think I might have.

You heard it here first……Indians have secretly decided to emulate their next door neighbors…..we will purposely try to lose as many games as we can the rest of the season (not 100% sure we weren’t already) in order to get the first pick and draft the high school phenom (Bryce Brown) next season…..seems like things have worked out pretty well for the other guys

    Harsh….yes
    Would it sell……absolutely.

Its bryce harper. But we got no shot to beat washington for the worst record.

  • 14. July 29, 2009

Keeping LaPorta in the minors until September call-ups is the right thing to do at this point. We don’t want to a waste an arbitration year when we are going absolutely nowhere.

  • 15. July 29, 2009

“Its bryce harper. But we got no shot to beat washington for the worst record.”

I don’t know. We might not win 15 games as we are currently constituted the rest of the way on. Unfortunately, neither will the Nationals.

Great news everyone – Fireworks night at Nats Park next Friday night! Come see the only team worse than the Tribe, whose fans are putting up “Sign Steven Strasburg” signs behind home plate around the nation!!

I hope Fausto has his sh*t together this time. I don’t really care if he comes in and gives up 10 runs on grounders but the walks are a killer. I know he isn’t a strikeout pitcher but having more BB than K is pretty pathetic.

Anybody have a script started yet for a new movie? I’ll send a few emails around and try and get Berenger, Sheen, Bernsen, Gammon, Haysbert and Snipes on board. Anybody think we could get Dolan to put on a dress and play Rachel Phelps?

  • B-bo

you could get Dolan in Ugg boots and a strapless little black dress for the right amount of cashish….plus it might mean we can actually afford to sign someone of value someday
