“New organization, new league, new approach. With all of the velocity, but fewer strikes, Wood’s fastball has been put to good use in 2009. With a new love for the cutter and a discarded slider, Wood has taken a three-pitch approach to attacking opponents. Now that he’s throwing cutters when he used to throw sliders, the breaking pitch has become a specialized weapon. The curveball gives hitters a different look than the slider, but it’s still a power pitch thrown almost as hard.

All things considered, I’d expect the new approach to cause less wear and tear on Wood’s fragile arm. While the ERA, WHIP and save rate posted for the Indians doesn’t look too good, there are a few points I’d like to leave you with: Wood’s walk rate is up, but last year was the anomoly. His K-rate is down one per nine innings, but is still in double digits. His home rate has increased four times over 2008, but, at 1.6, is due to fall.” [Harry Pavlidis/Hardball Times]

“The over-analyzing of the quarterback situation is a perfect example of how much a battle can be blown out of proportion.  A scorecard is kept by the media on how Quinn and Anderson fare each day. Touchdowns (that’s a joke) and interceptions are noted and taken ultra seriously by the media and fans.  The unfairness of that competition – playing against your teammates is not a strong barometer of anyone’s success – serves only to heighten the growing divide among the fans as to who is the better quarterback.” [Rich Passan/The OBR]

“Reggie Miller had some very interesting comments on LeBron James’ refusal to re-sign with the Cavs. Reggie said that he may want to keep the pressure on GM Danny Ferry to keep getting great players. It may be more about winning than money. Reggie said he played 18 years in a small market and wants LeBron to do the same thing. Miller said it would mean 10 times more to the NBA to have LeBron win it all in Cleveland than to have him take the Knicks to the conference finals.” [Dan Patrick Show/SI.com]

“No question, the fans love Brian Robiskie, and the defense looks better. Sitting up close gave us a great opportunity to see just how enormous Shaun Rogers is. We enjoyed the little dance Rogers did after “touch-sacking” Derek Anderson at the beginning of the second half. (He must want Quinn to start. We didn’t see anyone dancing after “touch-sacking” Quinn. Was Quinn even sacked?). Most importantly, it’s worth thanking the Browns again, for the chance to bring the family up to the Stadium for free, to get up close and personal with our favorite NFL team.” [Cleveland Frowns]

And a very happy (belated) first anniversary to Don Delco over at No Logo Needed.  Check out his latest regarding our perpetual optimism.  [No Logo Needed]

    Kerry Wood – “Soo you’re saying there’s a chance…”

Yes, thank you Cleveland Browns for making us buy $50 tickets to two pre seasons games and opening your doors for free to one glorified practice. You are too kind Mr. Lerner/NFL. [In caps lock]

Reggie Miller may like pursuing married women, but I agree w/ him 100% when he says it means more to the NBA to have LeBron be great in Cleveland than to be mediocre in NYC.
