Call Off the Posey Watch
ESPN’s Mark Stein is reporting that James Posey has signed a four year deal with the New Orleans Hornets. The deal is worth approximately $25 million. The Cavs were in the hunt to acquire the defensive specialist who spent last season in Boston. Posey was holding out hope that a team would offer more than the two or three year deal that was being offered by the Celtics, Cavs, Spurs and just about everyone with a mid-level exception. New Orleans decided the 31 year old was worth the risk of the extra year.
I’m glad they took that risk instead of the Cavaliers. The Posey auction demonstrated how ridiculous the NBA salary structure is. Posey got a deal for probably 2 years too many because 4 teams were willing to bid the same MLE contract amount for him. This is how teams end up tied to contracts that are not able to be traded, and players sitting on the bench that can’t help the team anymore. Not that we have seen that before in Cleveland…

What if we went after a guy like Jannero Pargo?

I’m actually glad that the Cavs didn’t land Big Game James if that’s what the going price was. The full MLE for four years? Dude will be 35 during the last year of that deal! We saw what happened when we gave a similar deal to Donyell Marshall in ‘05. Damon Jones was another four-year deal that didn’t work out. Giving four-year deals to players older than 30…check that, ROLE PLAYERS older than 30…never ends up working out.
At least Boston took a hit today…they’re not as good as they used to be after losing Pose.

I like Pargo, but we have enough undersized point guards as it is. And I wanted Posey, but definitely not at the price of 4 years. He has at least 2 good years left, maybe a 3rd, but not a 4th
I might be the only person who doesn’t care about Damon Jones not working out. Yea, a 4 year deal, but he makes what, 4 mil a year? In the scheme of things, that isn’t that much, and he actually was productive last year when Gibson went down

I agree with Ricky. Damon Jones doesn’t kill me like Donyell and Larry Hughes did. Also, I am with you on Posey. I think James Posey will be more productive into his mid thirties than Donyell Marshall was, but his contributions still aren’t worth the amount of money that he is making in Charlotte next season.
The Cavs just need to stay down, work on team chemistry and wait for the first team to throw up the white flag next season who wants an expiring deal in Wally Szczerbiak.
With any luck it will be Dallas and Dirk Nowitzki can come here as someone at WFNY suggested a few weeks ago.
