What do the Buckeyes’ injuries mean -

Written By:  Denny   |  Category:  Ohio State Buckeyes   |  Comments:   12

Last Friday there was a moment of panic among some Buckeye fans who follow the twits.  We heard a key member of the Buckeyes went down with a knee injury.  We didn’t know who, or how serious.  Then we hear it was our new beastly left tackle guard Justin Boren.  Aghast, a knee injury for a 300 pound man – we’re screwed!   Turns out it’s an MCL sprain – not any of the ACL tears that I jumped to conclusions about.

So with Boren out approximately 3 weeks (having him ready more or less around the game against the Middies) we have to look at other options for the LG spot.  There’s a lot of clamor around for one of the younguns to take over and get reps – specifically heralded recruit J.B. Shugarts.  It’s clear whoever steps in will be a bit of a step down from Boren, but getting reps for a younger guy early is always good – especially if Boren’s knee injury is a bit more serious than initially diagnosed.

With the SC game looming on the horizon, one would think the Bucks will do everything possible to get Boren back in time for that game.  Yes, having Boren for the entire season is more important than having him for one game.  However, some folks would say that the SC game is the season.  So, maybe we have to determine the answer to the following equation (I h8 you, math): Buckeyes minus Moeller plus Boren(100-x)% = ____

If we’re looking at injuries and how they affect the SC game it’s also worth noting that USC’s top lineman Kris O’Down is out for a month after going down at yesterday’s practice.  In addition, presumed starting QB Aaron Corp is likely out for the game as well, and true freshman Matt Barkley is seemingly struggling at this point.  Given Pete Carrol’s track record of getting some of the best guys in the country to play for him, we may not see a huge impact on the team based on this injury.  But if you couple this with the fact that OSU’s D-Line seems to be the strongest it’s been in years you may see a glimmer of hope on the horizon in Columbus.

Side note – I’ve been asked by the Artist formerly known as The Cavalier to join him in the non-use of questions marks.  I will do my best to keep the movement strong.  Just an editorial note so you don’t all do… what I think you’re gonna do… and just flip out, man.  Who’s comin with me -

    Boren was a Guard no?

Did I miss the part where it would’ve been possible to exclude question marks. Doesn’t it seem like there are no questions at all in this post. Is OSU supposed to be good this year. I’m out of touch.

    Correct sir. My bad.

Title, the equation, and who’s coming with me. Do you not know how to read -

OSU will probably have one or two losses, and end up on the fringes of the top ten. They’ve got a very young offensive unit. Does actoring prevent watching football.

Oh I totally missed the title – I apologize. You came strong with it.

My lack of interest in football is more in the way than actoring, but yeah it all collides.

Boren will be fine. I read a few places that he could go this week if there was a game. OSU is now a speed on the edges team and it’s going to be interesting to see how they do against a power team like Navy. Just survive against them and get ready for the big one on the 12th. By the way, will the bars have the game on Saturday if it’s blacked out locally?

I’m guessing by the game Saturday you mean the Browns – and I don’t know. If they have DirecTV they might be able to get it but I honestly have no idea.

Re: Boren – I’ve heard much the same. Obviously it’d be good to have him in pads and hitting now, but it’s probably best to let him get back to as close to full-bore as possible.

I heard this morning that Navy’s noseguard is out for disciplinary reasons. Not sure what that means at all. Does anyone.

Great news that Boren’s injury is only a sprained MCL…….the kid worked his butt off over the past year to get back to this point. He’s a off the block pancake busting left guard…….nasty. Hoping he plays against Navy as I’ll be way way way up in the South Stands. His brother Zach is the backup fullback as a freshman. Boren’s parents both were star athletes at Michigan, in football and track respectively.
