Browns Injuries: D’Qwell Jackson Doubtful
The injury report is out for Sunday’s 1:00 pm showdown against the Buffalo Bills and things are not looking good once again for the Brownies. Kicker Phil Dawson is once again listed as doubtful for this contest while LB D’Qwell Jackson also joins him on that list as well. Players listed as questionable for the Browns include RB Jamal Lewis, DB Mike Adams, OL Rex Hadnot and OL Floyd Womack.
The Bills, as expected, will be without the services of LB Paul Posluszny, DE Chris Ellis, S Brian Scott and former Ohio State Buckeye S Donte Whitmer. Those are a lot of names gone from last year’s improved defense, and thus hopefully the offense can get it rolling under Derek Anderson just like last week against the Bengals.
Below the jump, check out a solid quote from defensive coordinator Rob Ryan’s press conference yesterday concerning Jackson’s effort to play on Sunday.
Here is what Ryan, who was already in the media earlier in the week for his comments concerning Cincinnati’s game-winning field goal, had to say about Jackson playing this week:
“I think with D’Qwell, we’re hoping, obviously that D’Qwell can go. He’s doing everything he can to be out there. In typical guys playing for the Cleveland Browns fashion, he’s getting rehab nine times a day. He wants to play. This guy loves to play and we’re hopeful. I’m sure that will come down right to the game time, to find out if he can play. If he can’t, we’ve been working a lot of guys. It could be a couple rookies in there, Kaluka (Maiava), David (Veikune). Those guys have worked hard. If they get in there, they’re going to have to do a great job and rise up and help us get a win.”

I know he gets knocked for some of his tackles being down field, but at least he’s bringing people down. Will not be good for the run D at all if he can’t go…

Veikune was drafted as on OBL/Edge rusher prospect. (and picked way ahead of everyone else’s round 4 projection). Given that he’s already been moved to ILB (typically a mid-round position), what does that already say about this pick?

I would say that Ryan’s quotes about Trent Edwards are much more solid then his quotes about Maiava and Veikune.
“During his weekly news conference on Friday, Ryan was asked a question about the Bills’ offense, and after praising running back Marshawn Lynch and their All-Pro receivers, he said of Edwards unsolicited, “I don’t think that’s [Bengals quarterback] Carson Palmer back there by any stretch.”
Awesome. Unnecessary, but awesome.

DA is questionable. Oh he’s perfectly healthy. He’s just questionable.

And Isis, it tells me that they’re going to utilize his strengths, as opposed to trying to jam a square peg into a round hole. Is it really that difficult a concept to comprehend?

It tells me that this guy is probably more versatile than they thought and he can play multiple positions. Shocking that they may have gotten a guy that can actually play.
An MLB’s in the 3-4 don’t typically get into the backfield b/c they’re the guys who make the calls for the front 7 and just stop the run. Would I like to see a little better un defense from him? Yes, but he is a pretty damn good MLB and He’d start on just about any team in the NFL. Ray Lewis plays a different LB spot than D’Qwell and in a diff system so let’s not compare the two.

I don’t understand why everyone always talks about how Jackson makes tackles far down the field. That’s just a plain lie. This is from ESPN’s Brown’s preview:
“At Football Outsiders, we classify a tackle as a “stop” if the ball carrier is stopped well short of first-down yardage: a three-yard gain on first-and-10, a one-yard stop on third-and-2, and so on. Jackson finished second in the NFL to Steelers linebacker James Farrior in stops last year. With three interceptions and six passes defensed to go with a league-best 106 tackles against the run, Jackson can do a little of everything. If Eric Mangini can turn the Browns’ defense around, Jackson will start to get the attention he deserves.”

If I was worried about my running defense and wanted to get inside the opposing quarterback’s head, I’d say exactly what Ryan said about Edwards and Carson Palmer.
