Breaking Tribe News: Permission Granted to Talk to Farrell
Huge news coming out of Boston. According to the Associated Press, Red Sox GM Theo Epstein has granted the Indians permission to talk to pitching coach John Farrell about their current managerial vacancy.
This is a huge development as many feel that the ex-Indians farm director is at the top of Mark Shapiro’s short list to take over for the fired Eric Wedge. This news also may fly in the face of the ESPN report that had Farrell taking his name out of the running for the job, something Shapiro has said is news to him.
With the Red Sox early exit from the playoffs complete, it is possible that Farrell has had a change of heart and he is ready to lead his own club in the city where he currently resides.
Stay tuned.

Hellz Yeah!

The “taking the name off the list” ploy was just to get the media to stop asking during the playoffs. Now that the Sox are done, the truth comes out.

I hope this is true, if only to tick off ESPN.

This would be spectacular. Farrell is a great baseball guy, and I really think he has potential to be a bigtime manager.

This is the best of both worlds. Farrell is an “external” candidate who could also be considered an “internal” candidate. I like the idea of having a pitching friendly guy as manager too.

No. No. No. Shapiro will show us all how smart he is. We have no idea who will be named.

Am I the only person bothered by anyone in the Boston system coming to Cleveland, or am I just a homer?

The Indians scouting of pitching has never been the same since John Farrell left Cleveland. This would be a great hire both in terms of experience and talent evaluation.

Wouldn’t it be nice to have a coach picked in this town that has more upside than downside.
I liked John when he pitched here. Didn’t like what he did to Fausto and CC in the ALCS 2 years ago but it was his job. I’m sure he knew them inside and out. Boston really had their numbers those last 2 games.
It still hurts thinking about that series.

Oribiasi, he was a Cleveland guy first and even longer, I think.

In fairness to Farrell, when he was asked about the job the first time, he had a guy on the other line about a set of white walls.

The record of pitching coaches as managers is for the most part not very good.

@Boom,
Who’s on the list of duds?

@biff: well played.

@14 – Phil Regan and Ray Miller (both with the Orioles) come to mind. Bud Black hasn’t done anything great with the Padres. The only one I can think of who was really good was Roger Craig.
