While We’re Waiting – More Mangini Photoshops, Michigan’s Coaching Woes, and the Indians’ CF depth
October 24, 2009Open Thread – Ohio State Buckeyes v. Minnesota Golden Gophers
October 24, 2009The Minnesota Timberwolves have gone into cost-cutting mode already this season, and have waived 12-year veteran guard Antonio Daniels. Daniels is capable of playing both the 1 and 2 spots and would provide much-needed depth at the point guard position for the Cavaliers.
If Daniels were to be picked up, that would mean that either Jawad Williams or Coby Karl would be waived to make room. Based on Karl’s non-guaranteed contract one would think that he would be the one to go. The amount of time put in to Williams by the franchise bodes well for him, coupled with his strong preseason.
Stay tuned, but TD has laid claim that Daniels will be on the Cavs roster ‘by next week’. In other words, it be booked.
UPDATE: Bob Finnan says Cavs have already been in contact with Daniels.

this would be a solid addition for the cavs, not to mention he is an ohio guy
A DeSales guy; Go Stallions!
@ Taylor…. i was going to mention that originally but i didnt expect there to be any other former Stallions in the group
I had the same thought when I saw the waiver wire-Coby Karl would be the guy to go, Jawad just has too much size and versatility to give up on. Another name to keep your eye on is ex-cav and ex Mike Brown protege with San Antonio Mike Wilks.
Solid pickup if we can nab Daniels. He plays in control and would be perfect from an experience and leadership standpoint.
Seriously….what is up with Delonte? is he in the looney bin or rehab???
I would love this signing. I’ve been a fan of Daniels for a number of years and feel that he would be a great addition to the team and could help be that backup PG we’re looking for. I mean he’s a bit older, but if Anthony Johnson (Orl) can be a solid contributor, there’s no reason Daniels can’t do the same for us.
What kind of money/contract would this take? Obviously the Cavs would have the upper hand since Daniels is team-less but I’m sure it wouldn’t be for the same amount we have Karl.
And this would be huge, by the way.
@7 – Well considering we are way over the cap, I am sure it is not much if even anything over the league minimum. Rock will probably have more details on this in a few days since he is our resident expert in all things related to NBA numbers.
Word. That linked article (which I read after I commented) has a source claiming the veterans minimum of $1,306,455 for 1 year.
Please let this happen.
not only desales, but played his college ball in ohio too, at bowling green… go falcons!
@Mendy: HELL YES!!! Current Falcon right here!
We honored Daniels 2 years ago during a football game. Really great guy, and obviously from a basketball stand point he’d be a GREAT addition for us. It’d let Danny Green take Wally and Kinsey’s towel waving spot and would give us VERY solid PG play with Delonte staying at the 2. Ferry has to be applauded if this gets done.
Here’s the thing though, Daniels doesn’t help us one bit against the quicker PGs in the league. Parker, Rondo, Paul even J. Nelson will blow by this guy easy. Given Mo’s troubles against the quicker 1’s I’m tempted to think that a younger, faster guy might be our best bet. Don’t get me wrong, Karl is not that guy. If the choices are Daniels or Karl then I guess Daniels is the better option, but I’m hoping that maybe down the road there is something better to become available.
@Rick
This is kind of a last minute pickup. Daniels would probably be playing behind Mo, Gibson, and Parker for the point guard role. All in all, he’s not going to be a major contributor… he’ll just be extra PG insurance until Delonte gets back to playing form. After that, he’ll be relegated to garbage time.
If we’re going to make a major pickup, it’ll probably be at the trade deadline (but I’m pretty sure we’re not going to be doing anything unless it involves Z’s contract and a subsequent buyout).
Sounds like a no lose situation to me. Pay him the veteran minimum – cut Karl loose. Proceed.
If signing Antonio Daniels means less time watching Daniel Gibson butcher the point guard position, then consider me on board.
Daniels might even have enough size to guard some backup two guards if Coach Brown decides that he needs Gibson’s shooting off the bench, playing them together.
