Browns Game 7 Open Thread: Browns v. Packers

brownspackers
The Cleveland Football Browns take on the 3-2 Green Bay Packers today (1PM, FOX, WTAM 1100) in an American Football match.  The Browns are looking to get their second win of the season.  Rob Ryan is over his flu, but a lot of the players are still struggling with it.

Throw the fact that D’Qwell is shut down for the season (and Eric Wright’s car did a tumbling routine), and the Browns’ defense is looking a bit thin.  The offense showed marked improvement last week against the Steelers, so let’s hope that they continue to make strides.  It wouldn’t hurt if Josh Cribbs takes like every kickoff he gets to the heeeeez.

So leave your thoughts about the game here as it progresses.  Keep it clean, don’t attack one another, and smile.  Why smile?  Why not.  Check out our Browns Will Win If post if you want some keys to the game.  Otherwise, let’s hang out and have a nice little Sunday together.  Because it’s more fun to comment on the internet than it is to rake leaves.  And when if the game goes south in a hurry, check out some Browns games from the glory days on this YouTube channel (thanks to Grimm for the link).

Edit 12:15 – your Browns inactives are K Phil Dawson, DB Coye Francies, DB Gerard Lawson, RB Chris Jennings, OL Billy Yates, TE Steve Heiden and TE Robert Royal.  Inactive for the Packers are RB Ahman Green, FB Korey Hall, S Matt Giordano, OL Evan Dietrich-Smith, T Mark Tauscher, T Chad Clifton, WR Jordy Nelson and DE Jarius Wynn. (h/t The OBR).

And before anybody asks, no – I don’t know of a streaming site.  If you find one, pls leave it in the comments.

I think we can hopefully continue to see improvement en route to a brighter next year. I do not, though, expect to win convincingly.

Anyone know what channel this is on in Columbus?

Ugh…DA continues to make the hard throws yet will also continue throwing into triple coverage. Why force that ball to Furrey and not just give it to Jerome on the wing?

ya, DA needed to turn and look at the other side of the field. Then to compound it, Cundiff almost misses the equivalent to an XP.

Anyone think we’ll see BQ for the second half? I don’t think I’m interested in watching another hour of the Derek Anderson Experience.

  • Isis
    61. October 25, 2009

bobby-keep showing us all what little you know about NFL football. You have no ability to know if BQ is good or not based up 2 1/2 games of starting. The fact you don’t like the guy has nothing to do with it. At some point he’ll get a real opportunity, here or elsewhere-until then, refrain from your pointless and baseless analysis.

  • b
    62. October 25, 2009

sometimes you can look at a pile of poo and know it’s a pile of poo

@ b – yea but sometimes you can look at a pile of poo and think it’s a candy bar.

  • crobarred
    64. October 25, 2009

Jimmy Johnson said something at half time that made me think. He said mostly in jest that whatever QB played for the Browns his trade value would continue to go down. Maybe that’s why the mighty Quinn hasn’t seen the field since game 3? Maybe if they hold him out they can get a higher pick for him come the offseason? I mean if the season is essentially lost wouldn’t it make more sense to find out what type of QB you will have in Quinn? They drafted him with a first round pick. You can’t really see what type of player he is after two and a half games. I’m not fond of either but if this is going to be rebuilding year 11 it would make sense to play your draft picks.

  • b
    65. October 25, 2009

then you try the candy bar and realize it’s doodie

  • whipjacka

  • REEPJP
    68. October 25, 2009

    I still say pay him….

  • whipjacka
    69. October 25, 2009

Yeah, pay him. He is a special teams guy. It just happens that the browns have no wide receivers and are forced to plug him in as the second option

  • C
    70. October 25, 2009

    that was an incomplete pass…

  • 71. October 25, 2009

Just a heads up – Tribe signed Acta as manager in case you guys haven’t see the post. Please keep discussion of the beisbol over on that page.

  • crobarred
    72. October 25, 2009

Maybe the Browns can sign Acta to do their playcalling. He can’t be any worse than Daboll.

  • jcm
    73. October 25, 2009

The whole “Don’t play Brady” thing puzzles me. Neither guy has any trade value right now. You’ve got the worst rated starter in the league, and a guy who can’t win the job away from the worst rated starter in the league. Why not verify that Brady can’t play before we cut him loose? What are we learning from DA right now?

  • C
    74. October 25, 2009

Why is Anderson still playing? Quinn played 2 games against teams that are currently undefeated and played in 3 games against top 5 defenses. How did the coaches expect him to perform? Yet we’re letting this hack continue to start and play aga…inst teams like Buffalo and suck…I don’t get it! I don’t like Quinn, but he CAN’T be worse!

  • jcm
    75. October 25, 2009

    Pathetic.

  • Jon
    76. October 25, 2009

This is the worst football team I have ever seen.

  • whipjacka
    77. October 25, 2009

anderson’s rating if 40 this game.

  • jcm
    78. October 25, 2009

whipjacka, his rating for the whole season is about 40. Why would today be any different?

  • C
    79. October 25, 2009

I can’t figure out what the coaches are thinking. They talk about wildcat, and they don’t run it. Everything everyone says we should do, we don’t do it. We yank a QB after not producing against GREAT teams and we don’t yank a QB after not producing against average-good teams. We do everything opposite of what everyone tells us to try to do. It’s insane.

  • saggy
    80. October 25, 2009

forget about quinn – my problem is this: how can mangini still stay behind DA? he truly is horrid. The fact that we didn’t see Ratliff in this game is ridiculous. How can you stay with a starter who is the worst in the league and who put up 3 points? you’ve got to pull him – and if you’ve resigned yourself to the fact that BQ is not gonna play then you absolutely have to go to Ratliff at this point. DA is a minor leaguer.

  • ben
    81. October 25, 2009

I’m gonna say it – BQ would be better.

    drama ensue.

  • ben
    82. October 25, 2009

more than “Brady would be better” – that DA is still allowed to start on any team in the NFL right now is pathetic. Seriously, just play another running back or something. Not even the wild cat. just keep DA from ever touching the ball again.

  • TBrown
    83. October 25, 2009

We have a bye after next week. What are the odds we see a QB change by then? Also, are coordinator contracts in the NFL guaranteed the same way head coaching contracts are guaranteed? Just wondering how hard it would be to get rid of Daboll in midseason.

  • CleFanVA
    84. October 25, 2009

    What a joke.

  • CleFanVA
    85. October 25, 2009

    @83

Good question. Daboll is pitiful. I watched his last press conference–he looked like a deer in the headlights. Ryan’s defense isn’t much better, but he at least knew how to handle the press and came across as competent.

  • Alex
    86. October 25, 2009

I vote that anyone who still says start DA over Quinn gets committed to the nearest mental institute. That includes commenters here and coaches for the Browns.

  • YC
    87. October 25, 2009

I’ll just say…DA has played in 4.5 games, has 48 completions for 506 yards and 44.4% completion. Brady in 2.5 games had 45 completions, 400 yards and 60.8 completion%. Furthermore, Brady played against 3 of the best defenses where as DA has not.

  • AMC
    88. October 25, 2009

There’s a lot of qb talk here, which isn’t surprising. Obviously, qb is merely one issue of many for this team. The defense today was horrid, and the tackling remains highly suspect. At this point I would favor a switch back to quinn. I don’t believe he can hit the escalators anymore and da is clearly garbage. The browns should have had zero points, becuase da again gift wrapped a pick on the goalline on that second drive.

Unlike other games, not a single part of the team played well today. I switched my attention to the Vikings game but even they couldn’t help me out today. What a bad day of “football”.

  • C
    93. October 25, 2009

Bradford is an idiot. His stock will be so low. He should have either left last season, or stayed next year.

  • C
    94. October 25, 2009

I would like to see us use a later round pick on the QB from USF. Even though they’ve lost some of their magic, that guy can flat out move. He’s perfect for a team whose QB has to evade 5 rushers before being able to throw the ball.

  • Alex
    95. October 25, 2009

I’m just not sure if Mays or Berry will be better. Realistically, might as well look at our competitors in the top 10 (of the bottom). In my opinion, these are the worst teams/will finish with the worst records.
    Us: Detroit, KC, and Oakland.
Tampa: 0-16 looks like a real possibility. Maybe Carolina or Seattle is winnable. Other than that, though, I dunno.
Detroit: St. Louis, Seattle, and us. Up to 4 wins, probably 2-3.
Tennessee: Buffalo, St. Louis, Seattle. Probably has the most wins at the end of the year on this list.
    KC: Oakland, Buffalo, us.

I’d say 2-3 wins for us, 2-3 for Detroit, 1 for Tampa, 4 for Tennessee, and 2 for KC. We should be picking in the top 5. Again.

  • C
    96. October 25, 2009

btw, I mean a late round pick in a few years cause I know we’ll still need a QB and a pocket passer won’t work here…

  • 97. October 26, 2009

    from bobby:
lets not get in a qb debate. neither is good, neither has a future here.

Translation: I was the guy clammoring for DA at the end of the pre-season and after both of the first two games, and now I’m falling all over myself to get away from those comments.
