While We’re Waiting… Pryor vs Tebow, Big Ben in Detroit, and the Browns’ No. 1 Receiver

Written By:  Scott   |  Category:  Best of the Web   |  Comments:   27

While We’re Waiting serves as the early morning gathering of WFNY-esque information for your viewing pleasure. Have something you think we should see? Send it to our tips email in the sidebar.

Terrelle Pryor Tim Tebow

Take that, Tebow: “I’d like to take this opportunity to point out that Pryor didn’t shy away from the media like Tim Tebow did after a poor performance Saturday in a win (!) over Mississippi State. Pryor has received much more criticism in a year and a half than Tebow has in three-and-a-half seasons, but Pryor never dodged reporters after a game, no matter how poorly he played.” [Adam Rittenberg/ESPN]

Big Ben starting in Detroit? “While [John] Kuester isn’t ready to declare who his starters will be, the fact that it’s even up for debate speaks volumes for how much [Ben] Wallace has exceeded expectations thus far in training camp, even though Kuester was already familiar with Wallace from their season and a half together in Cleveland.” [Matt Watson/NBA FanHouse]

Needs more puppets! “When the playoffs roll around, here’s exactly where the Wizards should fit in my order of finish in the Eastern Conference: Cavaliers, Celtics, Magic, Raptors, Bulls, Hawks, Wizards, Heat.  In the Western Conference, it’s Lakers, Spurs, Trail Blazers, Nuggets, Hornets, Jazz, Mavericks, Suns.

The Western Conference finalists will be the Spurs and Lakers for seemingly the 100th time, while the Celtics and Cavs (no huge surprise there) will play in the East.  The Cavaliers and Lakers will survive to give us the Kobe-LeBron Finals we didn’t get last year.” [Michael Wilbon/Washington Post]

Hey, that Braylon guy will be a free agent: “[Mohamed] Massaquoi has played some nice games, to be sure.  And has surely proven some of the above wrong.  But there’s still no reason for us to believe that he currently is or should be anywhere near sufficient to fill the role of #1 NFL wide receiver, or that he ever will be.  Yet he’s our #1 receiver right now.” [Cleveland Frowns]

“When the Indians hired Eric Wedge in 2003, many people in baseball raved about Wedge. In my research on Acta, I’ve seen similar endorsements. Obviously the difference this time is that Acta has already made his rookie managerial mistakes, though in baseball a manager’s strategy rarely will turn a bad baseball team into a good one or vice versa. Ultimately the wins and losses come indirectly through player development, whether it be a young player breaking into the majors or a veteran player turning his career around.” [Lets Go Tribe]

How has Wallace exceeded expectations, exactly? He arrived at camp with a pulse?

@ Chris — Aww, come on, I thought he did reasonably well here. He was never a scoring threat, but he often had rebounds well into the ‘teens during games.

Is it really that hard to beat out Kwame Brown? And they say Joe Dumars is a good GM haha

Maybe TP should have cried and apologized for letting his team down at Purdue–that got St. Tebow of Gainesville all kinds of positive pub last year. Then Pryor is just a summer break in the Philippines circumsizing young boys and walking the beach with Coach Tressel away from being the next Tebow. Oh, and more Bible quotes on the eye black, TP.

MAYBE THE BROWNS COULD TARGET BRAYLON IN THE FREE AGENT MARKET NEXT YEAR. Like Andre Rison.

Only in Cleveland is a no-name manager celebrated who comes with a descending worsening year over year record and was fired at mid-season. That manager was replaced by another who almost doubled the winning percentage the rest of the year. It does, however, allow Shapiro to pick and choose the coaching staff-likely to be made up of farm system rooks. Nothing but head bobbing from all as Dolan/Shapiro move ahead with this low rent program. It all fits-as Kool and The Gang said…”celebrate”.

And, please-enough of the inane Joe Torre comparisons (led by non other than Acta-vision). Torre was a former MVP and acknowledged leader, very well known. Coming up with one or the example to try and make a point fails, for those examples are far from the norm. The closer odds suggest this is akin to Eric Wedge. Now go and and buy those holiday Tribe tickets.

@ Oribiasi – Not trying to be mean, but the guy is actually shooting worse from the field than he is from the free throw line, if you can imagine that.

    @ Isis

Re: You being upset about the Manny Acta Hiring.

See: Every single post yesterday in which you complained about it and all of the responses that followed.

Once you are done reading all of those comments, if you still feel you have something ADDITIONAL to add, by all means, come on back. Thanks.

    Sincerely,
    Cleveland

@ 3 Nullster: You can tell if Dumars a good GM by the result. Making moves that LOOK smart is what average GMs do.

@4 B-bo that, and being a good player.

mendy, you know isis doesn’t pay attention to “well-reasoned arguments” or insignificant little things like “facts”—those are for all of us sheep. Time and again people here have asked him completely innocent yet relevant questions regarding the opinions he presents or have provided facts countering his many assertions, and each and every time he turns tail and runs, refusing to respond to such things. Instead, we get insults and baseless claims–oh, and the occasional new “clever” nickname (”Acta-vision”–genius!). I continue to hope that ignoring his tired act convinces him to go troll elsewhere or start his own blog.

I THOUGHT YOU DIDN’T LIKE THE HIPPING AND THE HOPPING, ISIS. Serious question – given Acta’s experience with the Dominican team in 2006, how do you know he’s NOT a proven leader? The team got to the semifinals.

Nice juxtaposition of eye black in the picture, Scott.

@ Roosevelt – What do they say about throwing a 1 dimensional player 58 million dollars?

  • 14. October 27, 2009

Guys seriously – it’s one thing to directly ask questions to Isis. It’s another to spend time complaining in the comments – it gets things completely off topic and grinds (LOL KEEP GRINDING ERIC WEDGE LOLOLOL) discussion to a halt.

It’s damn near impossible, but ignoring folks can be done.

True, Denny…..and then the terrorists win. No more Wedging up the comment section heard.

Also, Roosevelt, don’t forget: being the “Son of Man, holiest of holies” seems to help his cause. Maybe TP needs to spend “5 or 20 minutes” in the presence of Tim the Righteous”–apparently I hear it does a person some good:

@ Chris — I know, I know. His shooting sucks. He is passed his prime; which just goes to show you how bad the Pistons must be this year. Or maybe he is re-energized, but my bet is on the former.

@13 What did they say about Dumars assembling a starting five that was limited athletically, and had no star? Whatever it was that they said, they stopped saying it after the championship.

I for one appreciate Activision for bringing us such gems as the Guitar Hero series, Call of Duty……Crash Bandicoot? Ok, not all of the moves were winners.

Ben Wallace is starting in Detroit, yet CharlieV is coming off the bench. Maybe Ferry knew something about CharlieV that we all didn’t…

  • 22. October 27, 2009

    Isis-

Don’t forget that Torre’s managerial stint in St. Louis–his third stop as a manager, by the way–was widely regarded as a colossal failure, regardless of his credentials as a player. He was referred to as “Clueless Joe” by Cardinals fans and run out of town on a rail 47 games into the ‘95 season. In his first 14 seasons as a manager, his teams went over .500 a rousing five times and he made the playoffs a grand total of once (’82 Braves).

The point being, a manager’s past records mean nothing because some times good coaches coach crap teams then move on to become good (see: Belichick, Bill). Dismissing a managerial hire based on the Nationals’ record is ridiculous. Did Jim Bowden really assemble a new-age murderer’s row in DC the last couple years? Garbage In, Garbage Out.

But please, don’t stop posting ever. Your tinfoil hat Cleveland sports conspiracy theories are so amusing to the rest of us.

I love that the Pistons cleared all that cap room and then spent $90 million on 2 guys who aren’t even starting (and the corpse of Ben Wallace is starting).

    @ #14

Denny seriously – it’s one thing to directly ask questions of your readers, it’s another to continually abuse them for responding a troll that you won’t deal with – it’s insulting and off topic.

It’s near impossible, but banning trolls can be done.

  • 27. October 27, 2009

Email me if you really have an issue. You’re the only one complaining about things, and I’m being as civil as possible in asking people to ignore and move on.
