Unwritten Rule #45,897 – Football Jerseys at Basketball Games
November 6, 2009Ohio State’s “Throwbacks” Unearthed
November 6, 2009The Tribe’s new coaching staff is slowly taking form as the team announced today that they have promoted/hired Tim Belcher to Major League Pitching Coach.
The first overall pick in 1983 (as well as the 1984 secondary draft) has spent the last eight years with the Indians as Special Assistant to Baseball Operations.
Per the Indians media relations:
Tim worked extensively within the Indians Player Development System, providing instruction and evaluation at each level of the organization. He also spent a considerable amount of time scouting players from outside of the organization and for the last several years provided advance scouting reports to the Major League staff. He has assisted the Major League pitching coach during each of his spring training camps during his tenure and at various points served as interim pitching coach at each level (AAA, AA, A) of the Indians system.
Failing to make the press release was the time that Belcher was on the receiving end of a Chan-Ho Park flying kick like it was a scene out of Mortal Kombat. I’ve opted to rekindle that flame in the picture above for our own enjoyment. Belcher’s pitching career – outside of that kick – was relatively successful while he was a player in the bigs. Lets hope that his experience at both levels can translate to the Indians current staff that is full of projects like Fausto Carmona and prospects like Carlos Carrasco.

Belcher beat out a field of candidates that included Rick Snorer, Jim Wheezer, and Mark Hummer.
And seven other dwarves.
So any chance you guys have a video link to that Park/Belcher fight? I tried finding it on youtube but was unsuccessful. I’d think a karate kick to the mid section would at least merit a youtube video.
At least he didn’t go 21-61 last year.

Thank you sir.
“Lets hope that his experience at both levels can translate to the Indians current staff that is full of projects like Fausto Carmona and prospects like Carlos Carrasco”.
Sorry, it takes more than “hope” to build a coaching staff. Here’s the first example of what will be the minor-leauges best coaching staff, one in which Shapiro has every right of refusal. Just named is the Indians equivalent to Brian Daboll, a ROOKIE pitching coach with zero experience at said position. Out of all the candidates in the baseball universe, do you really think this was Acta’s top choice, or SHAPIRO’S?? Do you think either Valentine or Mattingly would have chosen such a candidate?
Back to the land of hope and dreams……….
You’re right Isis, it does. Which is why Scott used the word “EXPERIENCE” two words after “hope”. The “experience” being referred to was:
He has assisted the Major League pitching coach during each of his spring training camps during his tenure and at various points served as interim pitching coach at each level (AAA, AA, A) of the Indians system.
But don’t let facts get in the way of a little ranting and raving!

Obviously, we know what you believe.
I choose to look at it like this: Acta had clearly looked at the Indians’ organizational depth before interviewing and being hired. Thus, it’s not outside the realm of possibility that he decided to go with a guy who has experience throughout every level of said system.
And, you can always hire a guy with tons of experience. Like the Orioles did with Leo Mazzone. And how has that worked out for them?
Tell us, Isis….who would Mattingly and Valentine have selected for this position? You seem to know. Also, who did you have as your top candidate? Or are you just complaining to complain without any kind of constructive input? I’m trying to “observe” your recommendations, but there are none….
So let’s see if I understand: hiring Don Mattingly to be manager would have been a good idea, despite the fact that he lacks experience in such a position. But bringing Belcher in as pitching coach is a bad idea, because he lacks experience in such a position? Though I suppose such paradoxes of logic will happen when one just endlessly rails against any and every single thing a team does, out of what appears to be personal animus.
Personally I like that Belcher has familiarity with the various levels of the club. Such a person seems a logical choice to help direct the development of the pitching staff.
Regardless of who was hired, Isis could find a better candidate, even though we’ll never know how that candidate would work out with the Tribe, since they WON’T BE THE PITCHING COACH NEXT YEAR. It won’t stop Isis from mindlessly second-guessing the organization with hypotheticals.
