Browns Bye Week Bullets: Mike Holmgren’s Job, More Kokinis Talk and the 2010 NFL Draft
November 8, 2009NBA Rumors: Antonio Daniels in Limbo

“The only real question is if Holmgren wants to take the desk job, just for the sake of having a job in football as soon as possible, or if he wants to wait for a head coaching gig. Obviously, if Holmgren did take this job, it would be possible to fire Eric Mangini and take over as the Browns’ head coach, but Browns owner Randy Lerner is reportedly content to give Mangini a chance to prove himself as the head coach. It would be a pretty bold move for Holmgren to take over and immediately fire the head coach.” [Matt Snyder/NFL FanHouse]

Win and in… “While it doesn’t wholly make up for the Purdue loss, it shows us definitively that things are actually trending up, the offense is getting better, and this defense is more than a beneficiary of having played bad offensive teams. Remember that one maxim about Jim Tressel teams always getting better? I’m close to rechristening it The Grand Theory of Ohio State Football in post-Cooper Era.” [WWAHT]

But was this game blacked out? “Whatifsports.com, which uses technology to match any two teams in history, poured the rosters, stats, schedules and other intangibles for the ’99 and ’09 Browns into a computer and had them play each other. The outcome?” [Bill Lubinger/Plain Dealer]

And, with that… “Ok. Great game. But I don’t particularly care that you dropped 19 points and 5 assists in the opening quarter or that you hit that insane three to end the first. Yes, blah, blah, blah, you are amazing. Yay. Fantastic. I get it. What I don’t get is why you decide to play these games in MSG. It’s really, really annoying. Sure, I like to watch you play in the Garden but it’s almost beyond Brett Favre stupid.” [Jared Wade/Hardwood Paroxysm]

Whatifsports.com has lost all credibility. Derek Andersons leads the Browns on an opening-drive touchdown? No way. I don’t care who they’re playing, that is just not possible.
Reminds me of the old joke where one team leaves the field and the other team scores five plays later.
tOSU will win out…including their bowl game. I know it’s not much of a stretch considering Stanzi is out and UM blows, but I think they turned a corner on Saturday.
Jared Wade is the busiest man on the internet.
Also, Windhorst had a question asked to him in his “Hey Brian” segment about the hype surrounding MSG, and why people care so much about everything there. Windhorst said all the hype was warranted because of its history (not just NBA).
Is there maybe a generation gap for caring about MSG? Or am I part of the uneducated many that needs to appreciate sports history more and worship MSG?
“rosters, stats, schedules and other intangibles”
Rosters, stats, and schedules are tangible.
Agreed Mr. Cleaveland. I thought it was a great idea to have the teams matchup to see who’s worse, but as soon as I read Anderson lead 2 TD drives and was game mvp, it loss credibility. I also like the Karim Abdul-Jabbar name drop.
Great article by Ian Thomsen of SI. He did a good job of bringing up points that we have all been saying from the beginning. It’s good to see someone in the National Media not sipping the ESPN Kool-aid about Lebron being in New York in 2010.
@ Amin – I don’t know, I’m 30 years old and I’m also apparently ignorant to the history of MSG, other than the 2 championships the Knicks won there almost 40 years ago.
/just got done reading MSG’s wiki page, still doesn’t care
All those WWF Smack Downs at the Garden have to count for something.
And MSG used to be the mecca for women’s roller derby, so it’s got that going for it.
Don’t sleep on the Ian Thompson article. I agree that Lebron ain’t leaving.
I ran the 86 Browns and the 08 Steelers…with an outcome of 7-6 in favor of the Browns.
I also thought Thomsen’s article was great and refreshing (for obvious reasons, because I agree and hope that he’s right). But even if you don’t agree with him (ahem, Knicks and Nets fans), unlike other “columnists,” he retains credibility by including these words: “At least that’s what I think.”
And don’t forget that MSG is also known for this. My favorite scene starts at about 3:40.
Is that Holmgren wearing a full headset at TRAINING CAMP? And here we thought Mangini was a detail freak…
Saw the Schefter article earlier today. It seems like Lerner meets a canidate and falls in love with the first one, a la Mangini’s hiring. I think most good managers review all the info before making a decision. Like a guy, but don’t make a life changing decision on it. You don’t marry the first girl you date, nor should you. At least sleep on a decision as important as this. Also what about Floyd Reese? Interview them all. Give Mangini all the rope to hang himself this year, he’s a sunk cost, don’t compound it by dragging it out if he’s not the answer.
