Cleveland Browns vs. Pittsburgh Steelers
Cleveland Browns Stadium |  Cleveland, OH
Kickoff: 8:20 PM EST | TV/Radio: NFL Network/100.7 FM/WMMS | Line: PIT (-10.5)

A month ago, there would not even have been a glimpse of hope for tonight’s game.  Couple a few injuries for the Steelers with a “not terrible” game last week for the Browns, and this one actually raises a few eyebrows.

Feel free to follow along in the comments, folks.  You know the rules.

Go Browns!

Evan Moore runs wild, baby! Book it!

That = TRAP DON’T FALL FOR IT

I hope we win (or show… wish I could bet on them to place instead) … but this game has inconsistency written all over it and I just don’t trust the Browns not to rip out my heart Indiana Jones and Temple of Doom stype.

I hate you Hines Ward … that is all for now

  • Justin
    6. December 10, 2009

Nullster you just made my day. Literally laughed out loud. I’ve also had to redirect my anger toward Ward ever since “the bus” left town.

    7. December 10, 2009

ESPN reporting that Hines might suit up for tonight. Can’t decide if that is good or bad for us; is a hobbled Hines Ward a threat to be accounted for? Or just a body taking up space?

  • saggy
    8. December 10, 2009

Evan Moore is our best offensive threat, Nullster. would you rather have a hobbled Hines or a mighty Moore?

I think I’d rather have Ward sitting on the bench.

  • 9. December 10, 2009

Eric Berry just took home the Jim Thorpe award. I’m a fan of his work.

  • 10. December 10, 2009

I like the way he’s put together.

  • 11. December 10, 2009

@ saggy – even though ND has lost a lot of its luster in recent years it’s an obvious step up the coaching ladder. I hope UC gets a good coach and continues to be a top-25 team (just so that the Bucks’ beating them every September works out well for SOS). My issue with it is his not staying for the bowl game. I understand that the future is their only hope and they need to retain recruits, but still – seems lame.

If we end up with Suh or Berry I will be quite pleased. I am a UT fan and have been going to games for many years – about 15 years in a row now. I have seen a lot of players go through there (Manning, Jamal Lewis, Al Wilson, Haynesworth, Mayo, etc) but I’m not sure I’ve seen a better pro prospect than Berry. He will dominate.

who in the HELL would go to the game tonight? You couldn’t pay me to leave this warm house to head downtown and sit on icy plastic chairs drinking watered-down piss-flavored Miller Lite for $7, waiting 20 minutes in between TV timeouts to see two mediocre teams hand the ball off up the middle again and again and again.

  • 21. December 10, 2009

There is plenty of alcohol that could get me to this game

  • Jay
    22. December 10, 2009

Locally the game is on WKYC Channel 3 as well if that helps anyone.

I hope someone (Anyone) knocks the smile off Hines Wards goofy-looking mug.

LMAO @ ReepJP by the way. Frickin Hilarious.

There oughta be an NCAA rule against leaving before a Bowl game or somethin… very [WFNY Edit: poopy]. I don’t blame the guy for taking the money/job, but man… what a way to take the wind out of the sails of the UC team. I’ll be shocked if they give Florida a game now…

    30. December 10, 2009

Brrr…looks frosty in the Land of Cleve. Wouldn’t blame the receivers for a few Edwards….er drops tonight.

Whatever happened to the NFL’s flex scheduling? I thought Thur night games were subject to change pending watchability?

And what’s wrong with Zastudil still? I got his jersey cuz nothing says STUD like ‘pinning it inside the 20′.

  • MP

In an unrelated story, 2008 Cleveland Browns MVP (Dave Zastudill A.K.A. Mr. Clutch) is still on the IR. In turn, the Cleveland Browns Fans named Josh Cribbs (The One Man Team) the 2009 team MVP.

This running out the clock strategy is absolutely retarded. We need another score to put it away and they are playing insanely conservatively.

  • Alex
    95. December 10, 2009

I don’t really care about the pick, it’s the possibility of keeping Mangini I’m not happy with. Maybe he can take this opportunity to ride off into the sunset and retire. There’s very little chance he’ll accomplish anything more endearing to the fans.

  • historycat

    112. December 10, 2009

    Anderson’s Win: 2/3, 23 yds, 0 TD, 1 INT over the Bills
    Quinn’s Win: 6/19, 90 yds, 0 TD, 0 INT over the Steelers

    Draw your own conclusions.

  • Jack
    113. December 10, 2009

    I am so sad pants.

The Steelers were banged up and fading. We had a coach who needed this win to have a prayer to stay and we all want him gone. We had the weather we needed. We had a weird Thursday night game on the national stage.

It’s like the stars aligned just to family friendly us right up the family friendly zone.

Waiting for next year…when my head can finally, at long last, hang no lower, because it has finally reached its physical limit in relation to the gravitational force exerted upon it plus the force we call the “opposite of momentum…”

    I am Jack’s realism.

  • subadai
    114. December 10, 2009

Really? Success? 171 yard RUSHING and 8 sacks against the team God hates? I don’t know how to react to this. One one hand, we just lost Suh in the draft next year. On the other, we BEAT THE STEELERS!

Wont Tampa draft a QB if they have the #1 pick? The Rams wont for sure draft Suh either…

  • Jack
    117. December 10, 2009

Because, you see, you just lost out not only on maybe the most heralded DL player to come out of the draft in a while (with infinitely inexhaustibly wonderful nickname potential)…but you also missed a great opportunity to change your display name come April next year…

subadai >>> suhordie OR suhbaguy (you get the picture)

  • historycat
    118. December 10, 2009

Satan just had to put on a sweater.

And ya, we may be stuck with Mangini for a bit longer because of this, and ya, we may not have the number one pick.

But keeping them out of the playoffs means I don’t have to sit silently while Squeelers fans gloat for another year.

    Totally worth it.

  • tylor
    119. December 10, 2009

Why can’t you all enjoy a WIN against the STEELERS?! I dont care what happens later in hiring/firing, draft, etc. Enjoy beating the Squealers and be HAPPY for a night!!!

  • Jack
    120. December 10, 2009

Don’t you see? This is our plight. EVEN WHEN WE WIN IT’S A COMPLETE AND UTTER FAILURE! Sheesh. Wouldn’t you trade 8 sacks tonight from the team for 8-10 sacks a year from Suh?

    BECAUSE I WOULD!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Eli
    121. December 10, 2009

  • Jack
    125. December 10, 2009

Hey, Eli! You’re right! Now we have the awesome advantage of paying a player that won’t actually be worth it $12.7 million his first year and watching him get two concussions consequently compelling the league to remove him from play! Why don’t you people see that the difference between 1 and 3 is a horrible one? I mean…really!

  • Matt
    126. December 10, 2009

You gotta enjoy this one, regardless of the consequences for Mangini and draft positioning. So sweet to knock these guys out of the playoffs and to send all those disgusting bandwagon Steeler fans back from where they came. So sweet.

    Just enjoy it.

  • tylor
    127. December 10, 2009

Exactly!!! You can GURANTEE me #1 that we pick Suh and #2 that he is going to get 8-10 sacks a year in a 3-4 defense?! When the Browns lose it ruins my week; I’m just glad that I won’t be so pissed off this week. Is that too much to ask for?

  • DP
    128. December 10, 2009

    Jack,
In a normal week, from 8 PM Sunday night until 12:00 PM Sunday afternoon, I can rationalize that it helps the Browns to lose, yadda yadda yadda.

But for the 3.5 hours during the game, to not root for them? Asinine. I don’t get why you’re so sad. So what, we don’t get Suh. It’s not like we don’t have tons of other holes.

We quite possibly kept the Steelers out of the playoffs. All of those Massengills with their yellow towels at OUR stadium tonight? They have a long, LONG ride home.

I can’t ever actually understand being a fan and NOT ROOTING FOR YOUR TEAM ON GAME DAY. I was in my 20′s the last time we beat those yinzers, and you know what, even if it means we pick 4th instead of 1st (and there’s no guarantee, since if three teams finish 1-15 you still have the coin flips) it was sure as hayell worth it.

Why yes, I have been drinking. Why do you ask?

  • hansolo1
    129. December 10, 2009

I’d rather win for sure. Who wants to be worst? Regardless of draft position. So we get 3rd, or maybe even 4th if we win another. It’s about pride. And who wants to pay all that money anyway?

And aside from that, Keanu Quinn looked decent tonight. Didn’t have the numbers, but no turnovers or stupid mistakes and pretty much kept the O organized (for what that is worth with Daboll).

DP you make a lot of sense for a drinking man. I am sober and it boggles me that people aren’t happy with a win. Why follow a team if you are rooting for them to lose on the hope that we might draft a player who might be good or might fire a coach? If this game doesn’t make you happy as a Browns fan, then you might have other issues imo.

Im sorry, I just dont get all this negativity. We beat the Steelers!! You Play To Win The Game! We actually showed some heart and played hard. Dont worry about the draft picks. We cannot control that anyways. Who knows? We could still end up with the #1 pick. Lots of games to be played. What we need to take out of this is the the Browns played a lot of young guys who fought hard and didnt quit. That means something. Maybe, just maybe, we can build on it.

DP, asinine is strong…but I do love licorice and pizelles (being Italian and all!)

Look, the fact is, we sit here every year, every week, and lament how inept the Browns are at drafting quality players. How many ‘can’t miss’ spots are there in the draft this year? TWO.

Where will we be drafting? THREE.

Sooooooo, as you can see, we are doomed. Inevitably. Another ANOTHER another ANOTHER another ANOTHER blown first rounder on the way. BOOK IT!

Oh, and Tylor, please prepare yourself for so many more ruined autumn and winter weeks to come.

Jack… I’m not a “joiner.” Good point about the screen name, though.

Maybe we can get Suh… but we will have to hope for a trade above us… I don’t think that TB will draft a QB since they drafted Freeman last year. STL will take a QB, cause they need one worse than we do. But I’ll bet TB would be willing to trade off the pick if someone wants a QB bad. That would leave STL left w/ no Clausen and looking at Suh when they have drafted D the last two years. Maybe they do something stupid like take Locker oe Bradford. Problem is they need to draft the best player available just like us… that means Suh. But maybe… just maybe.

    Anyway…. Browns up. Steelers DOWN!

    134. December 10, 2009

Most of the decent players on the Browns defense are on IR! Who cares if a few Steelers are banged up? Every week, we find out a few more Browns are done for the year! Pool, Rogers, Mosley, Barton… Good job, Browns!

    135. December 10, 2009

Can we please stop using the “who wants to pay that money” bit. Please. The difference between 1-3 just means you pay a ridic amount of cash to a guy you’d rather not have.

  • DP
    136. December 10, 2009

See, I guess that I can live with Shaun Rogers at the nose and Eric Berry as opposed to losing to Pittsburgh and getting Suh, even though there’s no guarantee because you’re relying on TWO COIN FLIPS WITH TAMPA AND ST. LOUIS. And it the argument is that those teams can win a game here or there, well then we’re still technically in the Suh derby.

Like I said, I can be rational all week, but when they step on the field I will root for them to win each and every time. Especially against the Steelers. I’m not saying your argument is wrong per se… I’m just saying that I wouldn’t trade potentially ruining the Steelers’ season for anything… even a stud defensive tackle in the draft.

    137. December 10, 2009

Mark & WFNY, how does beating the Steelers with a bunch of practice squad Rudy-wannabes give us anything to build on? It just says that our starters are worse than these these guys. It’s pathetic. And none of them will be here.

  • Mark
    138. December 11, 2009

Jack – if you think one guy is going to turn this team around you are very mistaken. I love Suh but is he a savior? Is he going to take us to 12 wins? Is he even better than Rogers?

Not to throw a bunch of cliches at you but it really does take 53 players to make a team better. You need the back ups to be able to play with all the injuries in the NFL. Yes, maybe these are a bunch of scrubs out there but they still beat the defending Super Bowl champs. And I think actually playing well and winning does give you something to build on. Better then playing like crap and losing dont you think?

  • Jake
    139. December 11, 2009

We can start talking can’t miss draft picks AFTER the combine. Maybe some stud emerges. Remember how great everyone thought Andre Smith was last year? He went 6th. Aaron Curry was also a can’t miss. He went 4th. A lot can change from here to April. So stop with the Suh talk and enjoy the win, PLEASE.

    141. December 11, 2009

I’m both drinking and very happy about the win. The extenuating circumstances, not so much. The draft doesn’t matter that much, as so many people are pointing out – there can still be a lot of ties at the top of it. I sincerely hope that this win didn’t buy Mangini any extra time, but if he can beat Pitt once a year at least there will be a bright spot. Better to be a bad team and beat the Steelers than a bad team and not beat them. Even better to be a good team.

    Seriously pay Cribbs plz.

Ah, I know what it is. I finished my brutal graduate math final today – this must be God’s way of rewarding me personally for it. What? This is a reward for everyone else who suffers? Pfft, this is clearly all about balancing out the universe for me.

Wow, I didn’t realize where the recent commenting had gone. I never even considered that any Browns fan would actually be upset about beating the yinzers for the first time in 13 tries. That’s effing pathetic.

The draft is no gimme, as we’ve seen as Browns fans since the Tebowing (aka “reincarnation”). When it comes to beating the team I hate more than anything on this mortal coil, I could care less if it costs us Suh or anyone else. We won tonight: enjoy it! We will still be top 3-4, and there are players to be had, trades to be made, etc. The point is this: the Cleveland Browns beat their archrival in front of our home crowd for the first time in YEARS. The yinzers are done. It’s a thing of beauty in an otherwise awful season.

  • REEPJP
    148. December 11, 2009

I felt this way before tonights game(believe me if you want), but am I the only Browns fan that comments regularly (maybe once or twice a day) that doesn’t think Mangini will/should get fired? …..Granted, he has brought in a lot of “his” players and they haven’t panned out….Granted, he has run practices a little long and players (see: Davis, James) have suffered/been injured because of it…..Granted, he is short, and secretive, and arrogant with information regarding the team and everything that has to do with it, but……..

He has done a few things that used to really **tick me off in the past…1.) we are one of the least penalized teams in the league…say what you want, but the flag kings of the Romeo area made me more mad than the actual losses 2.) Say what you want about injuries, weather, yada yada….he beat the Steelers

Finally…..even the most die-hard Brownies fan probably didn’t expect us to compete/ make the playoffs this year…..What does it matter if we go 3-13 compared to 7-9? Yes….some of the decision making has been questionable, but give the guy a 2nd year….if we don’t show major improvement then get upset and call for the guys head…

Let me be the first to proclaim Mangenious in 2010! Who’s with me!? haha

@reepjp – You’re not the only one. I agree with you he’s doing a great job and would prob turn on the Browns if they fired him, or gave him no chance. Looking at this team the last few weeks (didn’t get to see many game from where I live), this team can easily surprise and win 10 next year (Mangini is that good). Just need to be patient.

I was at the game, and it was awesome seeing the fans, the stadium, the team all erupt when that final second ticked off. I dont care about the ‘draft position’ right now cause he knows who is goin where and how the rest of the season ends. Our D looked Great tonight, and I loved seeing little benny on the grass all night! GO BROWNS!!!

Also, OC still sucks. you could tell what the browns were going to do simply by the personnel on the field. and Royal should be cut now. Like right now. I never want to see him in a browns uni again.

Potentially missing out on Suh is a little disappointing, but beating the Steelers and paying less to whoever gets drafted (still plenty of holes to fill) is totally worth it. Nobody is “can’t miss,” either. If you look down the list of guys who made the top 5 in Heisman voting on defense, it reads like a list of busts. Steve Emtman. Brian Bosworth. Now, I would definitely pick Suh given the chance, but nothing is a sure thing. Glenn Dorsey was blowing up the SEC at LSU and has been lackluster in the NFL. But more important than any of this…

They beat the Steelers! WOOOOHOOHOO!!!! YESSSSSS!

WFNY staff. Please give me some clarity on this. I heard that Weis would be interested in being the Browns Offensive Coordinator next year. But, I heard he wouldn’t want to coach with Mangini… So have you heard of Weis talking about this? If you have would you think Lerner would dump Mangini just to bring a better OC in than Dabbol? Who would replace Mangini then? Gruden, Shannahan, maybe Cowher? You guy have some sources.. Pull some strings and get some info for me.. pa pa pa please?

I lost my job at Nike, am literately a week from the streets, I moved to Portland last year, lost closeness with my family, lost touch with friends, my dog died, and I had the worst and hardest year of my life….but tonight……It was my night. I didn’t care about anything tonight. I had the satisfaction of the Browns finally beating the Steelers, and this year, in perfect fashion. In real, hard nosed, power football in cold midwest weather, and ruining the steelers hopes of the playoffs.

Tonight was Perfect. I sat in a Bar in Downtown Portland, It was me and one other kid from Cleveland. We were in our Browns gear, with hopes of “our super bowl” turning out with a Win. In Portland, the Bar was filled with Steelers fans, born and raised in Oregon, never really understanding the hatred between us and them. Like typical Steelers fans….they got up, left midway through the fourth, and for the first time, in 10 years…I knew that there was no way Ben was driving for a win on the last drive. It felt soo good, Things are changing. This was huge….Brady needed this, and Brady deserved this.

    Love it.

I feel like Ralphie Parker finally reaching his breaking point and taking out all his frustrations (I’ll shoot my eye out?!) in the form of a barrage of fists laid upon Scut Farkus. (Watch starting at 6:28) Take that, you yellow-eyed yinzers! This lost season just got a whole lot more bearable.

And now it’s time for me to curl up with my Official Red Ryder Carbine-Action Two-Hundred-Shot Range Model Air Rifle. Thanks for the early Christmas present, Brownies!

Dear WFNY Boys… we all agree this year sucked…but for God’s sake Hell froze in Cleveland tonight and we beat the Steelers. I live in Canton, Oh where Brown’s fans are somewhat of a minority so let us have our damn night! Hell give us a week! There are 133 days until the draft… we can worry about that later. All that matters right now is that THERE IS A SANTA CLAUS AND WE WON!!!!!!!!!

I vote to ban Jack from commenting until the Browns next game.
And anyone else for that matter, who are more concerned that the Browns “lost the #1 pick” than THE BROWNS BEAT THE FLIPPIN SQUEELERS!!!

I am the kick to Jack’s groin.
(I know I’m late, I love the Fight Club references guys!)

Did anyone else hear the broadcasters talking about Brady’s hair, and he’s growing out to get it cut after the season to donate to cancer patients? Say what you want about him, but that’s a pretty stand up thing to do.

  • 166. December 11, 2009

That leaves us with only one question – does Brady Quinn’s hair, in fact, cure cancer?

    We’ll finally find out!

All this talk about draft position is pointless because we are going to finish 4-12.

  • Rico Despeedstra
    168. December 11, 2009

The idea of losing to gain favorable draft position is akin to the player that “gets his numbers” while the team loses, in my opinion. Real competitors play to win. As fans, so should we.

  • 5KMD
    169. December 11, 2009

    A couple thoughts.

    1. I live in Pittsburgh right now so for some of us, this win does mean more than next year’s draft position. None of my wife’s family or my coworkers will be saying anything about the steelers for the rest of the season because that’s how they role here. They have already moved on to the penguins.

    2. From what I saw last night out of Quinn and Jennings?Harrison/Cribbs (and James Davis recovering hopefully), I am sure the Browns don’t need to think about QB or RB in the first (or second) rounds which is good. Concentrate earlier on the lines (right side of O lone and big uglies on D) or best defensive player available.

You guys have no idea how happy I am today that they finally beat the steelers.
