Apparently seeing enough of their defensive backfield getting torched, Phil Savage and company have made a trade for Dolphins defensive back Travis Daniels.
Daniels, a former fourth-round draft choice, will bring some much-needed depth to our DB corps. Playing both cornerback and safety last season, the thing that I like the most about Daniels is the fact that he has suited up for 16 games in two of his three seasons in the NFL. Health really has not been our strongest asset as of late, so a 16-game defensive back is easily a step forward given our current situation. But just how big?
Travis started 14 games during his rookie season, but an ankle injury in the preseason of 2006 forced him a bit down the depth chart. He was expected to compete for a starting cornerback job this season across from Andre Goodman, but it appears that his tendency to give up big plays cost him a few votes from the Dolphins coaching staff.
Obviously, big plays are something that the Browns will not be able to afford given our recent efforts. There’s no telling where Daniels will fit into the Cleveland defensive scheme, but if I were a fan, I would expect him to easily improve the 10.9 yards per reception that he gave up last season.

Travis Daniels? Print those playoff tickets now boys, we got Travis Daniels….
sigh.
HUGE!!!!
…
wait, who?
What did we give up?
I’m not “not” excited. So I think that is good.
Warm bodies with NFL experience are welcome. I can’t imagine they would give up more than a 6 or a 7, right? Right??
Well, he comes from a winning program.
reports now say we gave up a 7th round pick…..fine by me
An undisclosed draft pick.
Ok. So I guess this is good.
Talk about putting a band-aid on a gaping head wound.
Well, it isn’t bad. But when the biggest thing we can talk about is the fact that he’s managed to not get injured, we have some issues. I have a feeling that there are going to be a lot of disappointed fans out there when we don’t acquire a Ty Law-type DB for the season. We just don’t have the money nor talent to move – especially with our players dropping like flies.
And, while it may suck in the short term, killing our cap to sign Ty Law (who might–MIGHT–have two good seasons left in him) is not a good long-term move. Tougher schedule and expectations aside, Rome wasn’t built in a day and this defense won’t be fixed in one off-season.
I still dont understand why we cant try to get a 1 year contract with Ty Law. We have enough cap space to do it dont we?
I was also wondering if anyone has heard anything about the current status of Pool or Cieslak. I still havent heard the severity of Pool’s concussion or even what is wrong with Cieslak.
Sam – the answers to all of your questions will come in tomorrow’s podcast!
Sweet!
Let’s just pick up Asante Samuel and Lito Sheppard, then we’ll be good.
oh, no? oh.
