The Mo Williams Piece
March 8, 2010Could D.A. be Kurt Warner’s Successor?
March 8, 2010This winter, the Cleveland Browns hired a team president in Mike Holmgren. Just last month, the Cleveland Indians announced that general manager Mark Shapiro would assume the roll of team president with Chris Antonetti becoming general manager. And now, it appears that the Cavaliers will be doing the same with their general manager and his assistant.
The New York Post is reporting that the Cavaliers will re-sign current general manager Danny Ferry and promote him to team president. Assuming the then vacant roll of general manager will be assistant general manager Chris Grant.
While the pending free agency of LeBron James is getting the national media attention, the contract for Ferry also expires at the end of this season. We touched on this issue back in January.
[Ferry] has helped Mike Brown build a team identity, and he has found players who could fit in that system. After realizing the mistakes he made in his first offseason, Ferry has been ruthless in negotiating contracts that help the team maintain their financial flexibility to always make moves when needed. All of these things work in Ferry’s favor and make a strong case for deserving an extension on his contract.
And assuming the Post report is correct, it appears that owner Dan Gilbert agreed with these sentiments.
Since falling short of the NBA Finals last season, Ferry has traded forwards Sasha and Ben Wallace along with center Zydrunas Ilgauskas and a first-round draft selection for center Shaquille O’Neal and forward Antawn Jamison. It is reported that Ilgauskas will be returning to the team following the required 30-day window.

Can we promote him to president of the Indians too?
And have Gilbert buy the Indians while we’re at it?
What does this mean for his role?
Is this like a Colangelo deal?
Will he still oversee negotiations, transactions, etc?
@1
If Dick Jacobs was really the civic champion that he was made out to be, he wouldn’t have hosed Dolan on the sale price of the Indians and stuck us with a bad financial picture. Or at least he could have forgiven some of the debt after he saw how much he was struggling with his overpriced franchise.
Yeah, and C.C. and Manny and Thome could have given us a hometown discount. And the Easter Bunny…
You’d think with all these upper management moves we’d be talking about championships too but in Cleveland people seem to get promoted or receive new contracts even if they don’t win a title. Must be nice!
@ boogeyman — bitter, party of one…your table is ready.
Worldwide Wes for new GM.
@6- lol
Wes is off the grid.
@5 Nah more like realist who is tired of losing which is probably why I might love Cleveland teams but I’m not in love with Cleveland teams. When your in love you don’t see alot of what other people do and your reality is often skewed, think about it.
@OnlyInCleveland – don’t forget teaching LBJ to pitch a fastball
I think they are doing this to name LeBron player/GM. Hoping it will make him want to stay.
Brian has it.
@ 1 – I don’t know, that’s a lot of trust to put in a non-baseball guy. Next thing you know, he’ll be dumping 30-30 2Bs and signing DHs with chronic conditions to noose-like contracts while letting multiple Cy Young winners walk for a bag of magic beans. That **could** be really damaging to the Indians.
@10 – A.) I don’t think anyone has to teach LeBron anything. B.) What do you think he would call his fastball?
@13 – Can you imagine if we had a front office like that? It would make it almost unbearable to cheer for the Tribe…smh
@11- Ha I love where your head is at. Sounds like a great pitch the King for me.
Sometimes I wonder if Gloria James is somewhere on the Quicken Loans payroll. It would not shock me.
WWWEs GM? NO. LeBron GM? NO.
Charles Barkley! I’m only half kidding. The dude knows talent. Let Ferry do the trades and let Chunk do the talent evaluations for draft and free agency. Think Chunk would have passed up Blair for Eyenga?
@15- Somewhere I’m sure. Maybe she will be the new GM????
Glad Ferry is staying on, I figured he would be anyway. I think the GM position will be between Lance Blanks and Chris Grant as both are very important parts of the Cavs organization. Good move here. Another in the long line of Cavs moves since Gilbert took over.
Well someone could teach LeBron not to jack up 3 point shots.
I long for the day we win a championship…just so Boogey has something to be happy about. Yeesh.
@20 Thank you, thank you very much!
