Browns QB Trade News: Seneca Wallace Thinks He Will Start; In Other News, Water is Wet
Written By: DP | Category: Cleveland Browns | Comments: 35
We’ve debated the prospects of who will be the starting quarterback in 2010 for the Browns given the release of Derek Anderson (and his subsequent whine-fest) and the trade for Seattle backup Seneca Wallace. Denny has loved every second of the debate. He feeds on it. Talking about Browns QBs is his vampiric sustenance.
At any rate, my opinion of the move is that it’s basically a Ken Dorsey Circa 2007 “Hey, He Knows The Coach/System So He Can Be A Tutor!” kind of move. I’m not a fan of the move, but whatever. If that’s the case, someone forgot to tell Wallace. Speaking on KJR 950 AM in Seattle on Tuesday, Wallace was asked if he thought he was being brought in to be the starter:
“Yeah, that’s the way. I’m coming in with a lot of confidence and trying to come in and spark the team a little bit. It’s time to kind of start fresh. [Holmgren and I] talked about some good things. Like I said, I’m excited to be going there. That’s all I can say. You’ve got to wait and see what happens.”
He was then asked if he was in his prime:
“That’s why I know the sky’s the limit. As long as I take advantage of every opportunity I get there in Cleveland, we’ll see what happens from there. But I’m really excited about being back with Mike and [working with coach Eric] Mangini. The future is bright for us in Cleveland.”
So, while those statements are not bulletin board material for current assumed started Brady Quinn, there are some undertones in there—to me, at least—in which Wallace is playing up his relationship with Holmgren as a potential leg up. Observe:
“Mike has always been a guy who wants to have control — and have control of every player on the football field especially on the offensive side of the ball. I’m pretty sure we’ll see a lot of him on the field standing around and overlooking things. But I think he understands this is Mangini’s team and he has to let him do what he has to do to make us successful.”
I know many of you will see me reaching here, but I interpret all of this as: “Look, I’m in my prime, and I know Mike Holmgren and his offense better than anyone else on this team. Mike’s not the coach, but he’s going to have his hands on everything football related. Ergo, I’m the front-runner to start. Peace!”
I also know that it’s not ground-breaking news that someone who was just traded for wants to start, or that any pro athlete anywhere ever wants to start. For me, the hang-up is that I don’t personally want Wallace to start, but I interpret his quotes plus his hints of extensive conversations with Holmgren to mean that he might.
Most of all, I know that somewhere Denny is banging his forehead on his desk. And that alone makes me smile.
So, what do you think? Is this “slow news day” fodder that I’m reading waaayyy too much into (I know, a first for a hopelessly over-analytical Cleveland fan such as myself), or is there some smoke here?

I wouldn’t be surprised if he does start, if his only competition is BQ. Yes, a slow news day indeed..
I’d like to start a more pertinent conversation about Browns QBs.
What do you think of trading for Kevin Kolb and then putting him and Seneca Wallace in that teleportation machine from The Fly and then putting whatever monster we get in the end as our starter?
I agree with you DP, I think it was a tutor move. I think the only way Wallace will start is if BQ just looks truly horrible in camp and they don’t have a choice.
@ Eli – we should have done that when we had BQ and DA both on the roster. We’d get two QBs – one highly valuable (intelligent with a rocket arm) and the other would be beautiful and dumb as rocks. The Paris Hilton of QBs, if you will.
That, and if all else fails we throw Goldblum in there and see if we could get a QB that could hack into alien RF transmissions.
ESPN reporting Browns looking to trade Quinn
I think that holmgren telling seneca he has a legit chance to start may mean the end for BQ. I could definitely see holmgren not liking BQ or DA and deciding to trade for a competent stop gap in seneca before finding our franchise QB. Just a hunch but I say BQ is no longer a brown post draft.
@ Denny – You know that if we had the means to do that , we would have ended up with Anderson’s brain and Quinn’s arm.
My next question would be: Does anyone want a quarterback on the roster who thinks he WON’T start? No? Neither do I.
It seems like Holmgren is unintentionally drawing a line in the sand. Holmgren’s guys V.S. Mangini’s guys. Whose former players are going to be more of an impact? Whose draft picks are going to ACTUALLY see the field? Who can make more of less. All of the picks that Mangini has assembled or all of the players that Holmgren is shipping for his own picks.. I like the internal “***British slang for drinking***” contest that our new front office is having…
British slang for drinking from that Chumbawamba song….
DA’s beard, plus Quinn’s sculpted abs = 300.
Well, now I’m just sad that this will never come to be :{
THIS…IS…CLEVELAND
It is looking increasingly unlikely that Brady will start for the Cleveland Browns come next season.
This would make a great reality show
What’s sad is even if the Browns fielded 300 players at once, they still would end up .500 at best.
With Schefter reporting that the Browns are talking about trading Quinn, I think it opens the door for either Wallace to start, which I don’t think is a bad idea. Or, for us to trade for McNabb for our 2nd round pick. Regardless of what the Eagles might say, they aren’t about to pay all that salary to 1 position. The old saying goes that if you have more than 1 QB, you have none. Well Philly has 3. That bodes well for us.
I say we re-sign Derek Anderson. I think he’s grown a lot since his time here with the Browns. Comeback?…. Anyone?… Hello? Anyone think DA deserves another chance? COME ON! ANSWER ME! Jerks!
To anyone saying “it’s not a bad idea,” it is a bad idea. He is still bad. Better than what we have? Maybe. But bad is bad anyway you cut it.
/facepalm
Why would we waste a 2nd round pick for McNabb if we already have a stop gap in Wallace? If the Browns pull the trigger on that deal I might lose some faith in Holmgren.

Not a lot of throwing/running lanes with that many dudes on the field…
ben
do you mean bad as in good?
the browns are bad as they wanna be.
(I’m still polishing my act.)
Wallace may have been low hanging fruit, but I don’t see this as a “how good is our QB” year. I figure Wallace will probably start unless the Browns acquire a better veteran west coast offense QB. I don’t think what they need from a veteran west coast offense QB can be delivered from a tutoring role.
@17: thank you.
me@19
“I figure Wallace will probably start unless”
I figure = 20% reliability
will probably = ~75% reliability
unless = 30% chance?
.20 x .75 x .30 = 4.5%
book it.
I can’t trust a football team to someone with the first name Seneca. Brady is not ideal, but will have to do. Edge: BQ
However, Quinn is a horrible last name. Wallace is a warrior name. Edge: SW
Hmmm, this is too close to call, lets just flip a coin.
“I’m pretty sure we’ll see a lot of him on the field standing around and overlooking things. ”
Your only chance at starting is if he’s overlooking a lot of things.

@Stin: I’d rather see the Browns get a proven commodity in McNabb for a 2nd round pick then use it on a kid who might never be any good. McNabb could play at a high level for us for another 3-4 years probably. In that time we could groom a nice QB and pass the torch. What guarantee do you have that the 2nd round pick is going to do anything of significance once he gets here. Matter of fact, I can only recall Eric Wright doing anything as a 2nd round player for us in recent memory. MoMass had 2 good games, I can’t say he’s been that great just yet.

D’Qwell?
Has anyone else heard anything about Troy Smith coming over from Baltimore? I’m not sure if he’s any better than Quinn or Wallace, but I heard a rumor he wanted to play for the Browns more than anyone has ever wanted to play for the Browns before.
Anybody reading the rumor of trading Quinn now?
Nope. No one is reading it. It has not been mentioned in these comments at all. In other news, HURT LOCK WON THE OSCAR. I HAD NO IDEA.
@S-Dub McNabb is a money pit. This team needs to get younger. Your right, your not guaranteed anything with a 2nd round pick but Heckert has proven to be a good judge of talent in the past. Also, how can you guarantee McNabb will play at a high level for 3-4 years? You yourself said Mo Mass only had 2 good games….he’s our number one receiver right? So unless you plan on having McNabb throw to himself/run every play I would much rather spend that second rounder on someone who isn’t guaranteed but will likely contribute. We have serviceable players at the QB position currently, we have far too many other holes to fill to waste them on vets unless its like a 5th or 6th round pick.
FYI recent second round picks:
DeSean Jackson
Ray Rice
Sidney Rice
Lamarr Woodley
Greg Jennings
Devin Hester….
and the list goes on
@DP: I forgot about DQ, like I said, it was off memory lol.
@Stin: I see what you mean about our WR’s, but we don’t know if those WR’s were actually running good routes (sans Braylon) and our terrible QB’s were just missing them or if the whole thing was just broken. I would rather have McNabb over Kolb, any other 2nd round QB we could take, or Seneca Wallace.
And, if you want to start throwing out lists of guys who made it from the 2nd round, how about you throw out the list of guys who didn’t. We all know that’s a two way street.
“Yeah, that’s the way. I’m coming in with a lot of confidence and trying to come in and spark the team a little bit.”
Confidence gained from the lessons well learned from getting beat out by Charlie Frye. A little spark is just what is needed to unleash the offensive juggernaut.
Wallace should come in thinking he’s going to start. And while Wallace may not be ideal, I believe he’s better than anyone we had last season, so in that sense I DO want him to start….unless we end up with someone better.
Cleveland Browns QB Seneca Wallace passes physical; he expects another QB to join Browns
