Gomez Shines and Bats Sizzle in 11-0 Clippers Win Over Tides
June 16, 2010Browns News and Notes
June 16, 2010Dawn is an artist. No really. She makes web comics and is a graphic artist. You can check out her work here. And here. And, she’s a girl. Who reads WFNY. I know, crazy huh?
1. Favorite sport to watch in person
I have only seen 1 Browns game, but football is by far the most exciting! I saw them play the Eagles the season the Eagles went to the Super Bowl.. the Browns were awful as usual.. but fans were still there, cheering, barking, yelling, stomping.. I felt the stadium move. I prayed for a less than 20 point loss just have some dignity, and the game actually went into OT… only to lose in the end by a field goal. Typical.
2. Favorite sport to watch on tv
Again, football. I even watch the Eagles games here since I live in Philly and don’t get to see many nationally broadcasted Brownies games. Though the Cavs these past 2 seasons were pretty fun to watch with my family, I got both my sister and mother into basketball.. and part of the reason they got hooked was the team’s chemistry. (hindsight now, of course)
3. Sports or hobbies you play
Anymore? None. I miss it! I used to play street basketball day and night, one pick-up game after another… and was on the the HS championship team. I was also a fast-pitch softball pitcher/shortstop/3rd baseman/woman, played softball most of my life. I’m a very competitive person.
Part of the reason playing sports was phased out of my life is due to my life’s aspiration of being a cartoonist. I am a graphic designer by day for a snack foods company (Superpreztel, ICEE), but any other spare time is devoted to 2 other projects: my 2x-a-week webcomic “Zorphbert and Fred”, as well as illustrating the “Abby’s Adventures” kids book series. Anyone like comics or have a little girl? *wink wink nudge nudge*
It’s a bizarre mix I know, but that’s always been me: sports and comics.
4. Married? Kids?
Will be married in November, no kids, not really planning on it. I’m marrying a Philly guy, how the heck would we raise them? We’d fight over what sport-team one-sies to buy for them. We’re already torn over what team’s bandanna the dog can wear.
5. Favorite Cleveland sports memory
It ended in sorrow (well, what CLE sports memory doesn’t, in the end?), but this expresses what kind of devotion my family gives to Cleveland sports teams. We moved from CLE to the Philadelphia area in 1994. When the Indians got to the World Series vs. the Braves in 95, we packed up and drove back to Cleveland over a weekend… not to go see game 6 live at the Jake, but to watch it with old friends and neighbors who would appreciate it the way we did. I was crushed that evening, but I had the sympathy of fellow fans who “got it”.
It’s a tie between my first heartbreak and the heartbreak when I realized this is a Cleveland Tradition. Jordan’s “The Shot” devastated me at 10, but the ’97 Game 7 breakdown was that slow, building, retching devastation that starts with shock and days later ends with the turmoil of trying to break the “bad habit” of Cleveland sports fandom. It never works. I always climb back on the horse. I’m a masochistic “Lifer”.
7. Which team do you most want a title for (Browns, Tribe, Cavs)
Honestly, I do not care… I just want a title. I get that the city as a whole would be far more pumped to have the Browns win, but I’m at the point of “take-what-I-can”.
8. Your dream piece of Cleveland sports memorabilia
A baseball signed by the amazing ’95 Tribe team. I was never so proud of being a Cleveland fan. I sported an Indians hat, winter coat, and buttons for months. The rest of my Philly-fan high school peers thought I was crazy.
9. Favorite place to watch a game
With other fans, it does not matter where. The community, the shared hope, excitement and sorrow.. that’s what sports is all about to me.
10. Any superstitions
I’m not a believer, but it often seems like when I do not watch a game because I have given up, my teams win the big games. Recently in the past few years, I am ashamed to say I missed Lebron’s big 4th quarter vs. the Pistons because I gave up at that point. I walked away seconds before the game winning 3 last ECF’s. I have been banned from the room plenty of times by other superstitious people… but it seems I FULLY have to give up for the superstition to “work”, not just leave the room. All that said, I’m still not a believer.
11. What would be your entrance music
Never gave it thought really… maybe because I am not envisioning myself playing with a Cleveland team (I’m a chick, I know the likelihood of that). But I’m a big Smashing Pumpkins fan. Maybe “Lucky 13”, one of their later underground-ish songs… great riffs, cool intro and it IS my lucky number. *tips hat to Omar*
Why Cleveland teams?
Born and raised. It’s in my DNA, regardless of where I go. You can take a Cleveland sports fan outta Cleveland….

Does she remember the first Phillies streaker at the new park? Yup, the one who wore nothing but a Reagan rubber mask…the week of his death. He was one of my buddies in my old Marine unit. He still lives in the Philly area.
mmmmm….cheese steak.
Were you able to make it to any Phillie games last year while Cliff was still in town?
Major props. Superpretzels and ICEE’s rock.
agree with MattyFos on the Icees and SPs.
for your #5 – I hate David Justice. HATE HIM (non-sarcasm font). Couldn’t pull myself to root for him when we had him because of that game and was actually relieved when he went to the Yankees (so I could properly hate him again). Friggin’ David Justice. I hate David Justice.
for your #2 – I was able to get my wife interested in the Cavs for that same team chemistry reason (that and she’s a big Shaq fan)
for #2 – best wishes (look at that proper etiquette)
for #11 – good choice.
OK. So, now I want to be cartooned…or self-featured in a strip…or some other way to take advatange of artistic skills for free. Yeah!
for #4 – best wishes (look at that proper etiquette)
@mgbode – I’ve had the same baseball/softball mitt for probably over 10 years, and I’m sure you can guess whose signature it came with…
Can’t believe you haven’t gotten any grief for leaving during the LeBron/Pistons game or game 2 ECF last year…
Pretty sweet website. Took me a while to realize that no matter how many times I roll the dice, it always lands on a blank square.
@JNeids – so ’95 wasn’t as crushing for you I take it 🙂
While I can’t remember for sure, I gotta believe at that age it absolutely mattered to me whose signature was in the mitt when I got it, so apparently I had no hard feelings
NO GURLS ALLOUD IN OUR CLUBHOWSE!!!!
Seriously though, never knew dgriff was a woman. HA! Not that it matters. We’re all in the same misery boat here. I lived in south Jersey for a couple years and they were all Philly-team crazy. Annoying. God bless you for marrying one of them! Good Luck and Best Wishes!
Great to see a fellow Cleveland tweep highlighted on WFNY! Congrats Dgriff
lol @ vare-a-jay. YOURE NEXT!! and spice it up!! because the pressing questions are about your ‘do and who you prefer among maicon, kaka, and robinho.
(and didn’t know she was a girl either… which, dawn, i think is high praise!)
i enjoyed surfing dawn’s website very much. this girl (no offense) is TALENTED. making a living at what she clearly loves and excelling at it. i envy her because her work is clearly also her love. put it this way… the comix and ICEE are nice… but this shows her range! http://is.gd/cSb7y since you’re in the neighborhood… here is the project i hope you get a chance to take on. http://www.stauffers.net/ good lord, they need you!
(but i have to tell you, i don’t get Z&F. maybe you could do a sports thing? obviously delonte lends himself to this. and now there’s shrek and donkey with the celts? just sayin. ok, no more unsolicited advice.)
lyndall-time for a new logo??
imagine what dawn could do for frowns’ logo?
as for her comments, i always look for them as a voice of reason. she’s like our own mark kay cabot keeping it in perspective. when she flies off the handle we’ll know it’s time to flip over cars on euclid ave.
Hey guys.. thanks so much for comments, and to the WFNY guys, thanks for the interview opportunity! Figures the day this went live I’m sick as a dog, ugh.
Mike- I actually do not recall that specific streaker, LOL.. tho I know there is quite the history. One game I attended, we were “treated” to a clothed streaker. Wuss. ;0)
But lately, all this streaker tazing going on has caused quite the stir.
REEPJP- actually, yes. My boss, being that he has connections with the ballparks all over (Superpreztel) gives his employees tickets all the time. I got to see the Phils win the division, and beat the Dodgers to go to the WS. It was awesome, I am actually a Phils fan too, they’re such a likable group! I have a Cliff Lee Phils Tshirt I have no idea what to do with now.
mgbode- Yeahhh, yeah.. not a Justice fan either. I remember thinking “oooookay” when the Tribe signed him. I was a big Lofton and Omar fan. Thanks man, appreciate the kind words.
MallaLuba– Thanks! An easy way to get a free caricature off of me is to play my monthly Caption Contest on zfcomics.com. A fill-in-the-blank-bubble thing. The winner, with the funniest/best entry, get free fanart, or caricature, or whatever they want!
Rick- oh, trust me, I have. Some of the games, I get to the point where I’d rather not watch and risk missing something… because I am that convinced of another meltdown. But I guess, in this case, it’s good I’m in Philly and not in CLE or I would never hear the end of it.
JNeids- Thanks! I’m not the best at flash programming… I kinds had to make it pre-programmed. I’m thinking about revamping it and making it smoother, less gimmicky.
Varejay- Ha ha, I snuck in to the boys clubhouse. I do find it surprising that my avatar doesn’t look “femme” enough, but on blogs and twitter, most people assume I’m a guy, until proven female, LOL! Even in the comics world I am assumed to be a guy first. Hell, at the Philly Comic Con, people would come to my table and be surprised when they found out that I was the creator! I guess they figured I was the girlfriend and was watching the table? annoying.
Anyway, enough of the yammering. Where in South Jersey did you live? My parents live in Delran. I went to HS there, but went to college in PA and now live in PA suburb of Philly.
Thanks guys!
[…] On a sidenote, many of you may already know that I am a hardcore, delusional, masochistic Cleveland sports fan. Yes, yes… thanks for the pity pat-on-the-head. One of my favorite blogs is Waiting For Next Year (aka WFNY). Recently, they started doing interviews with their biggest followers, me being one of them! I may be one of the only chicks hanging out there, not sure. Anyway, go check it out! […]
I too was at that Browns-Eagles OT game in 2004. My gosh, did TO erupt that day. Helluva game.
It was the night Thome hit his 400th HR against the Reds. He also had some notoriety when his lawyer tried to use the “Janet Jackson defense” for his client. Ah, the memories…
jimkanicki- I suppose being part of the “pack” here is high praise! I’m a fan first, I just happen to be a girl. Thanks for your compliments, glad you dig my stuff! I do get a lot of good feedback from that gutter service logo, it’s actually my fiance’s uncle’s company. Not sure what I could for stauffers… that would be a betrayal on my company’s brands! LOL If you’re curious, J&J Snack Foods has a ton of niche brands, here’s our site: http://www.jjsnack.com
Sorry you “don’t get” Z&F.. it’s cool tho, not everyone is a webcomic enthusiast. Z&F is not that different than the funnies in your newspaper, I’m just going about it in a different, more modern, way. If you remember that TV show “3rd Rock From the Sun”, the concept is a bit like that. I have considered doing a sports related comic… it’s just finding the TIME. I have so little spare time.
I’m all for helping out with logos or designs.. I can photoshop heads and the like, no problem. Just gotta give me the time to do it, or buck up, LOL!
Also, glad to hear I am a voice of reason! Most around here think I fly off the handle and am way too passionate about sports, and need to lighten up. I’ll admit that I give up on my teams too quickly, but my heart just cannot handle it.. when I start to see the collapse. Which is why I stopped watching the Celtics series about 4 games in. CONFESSIONS!
Mike- Thome is beloved no matter where he goes. Philly fans only had him a couple years, and they STILL love the guy.
