Indians 3 Blue Jays 1: Proud Papa and The Pen Lead Tribe To Fourth Straight
July 1, 2010SABR-Toothed Triber: Why Not Carlos?
July 1, 2010The world was buzzing in disbelief this morning with NBA news. This time, it was unrelated to that guy from Akron. The Milwaukee Bucks reportedly signed mister mullet patch, Drew Gooden, to a 5 year deal worth $32 million. I’ll do the easy math for you. That is $6.4 million per year for Drew Gooden’s services. At 28 years old, that will keep Drew Gooden in Milwaukee until he is 33 years old. If you are keeping track of the Bucks in addition to the Cavaliers, that gives them Brandon Jennings, Andrew Bogut, Corey Maggette, and John Salmons, assuming he returns as a free agent.
The deal had me thinking. The reaction struck me as interesting because of what we saw with Gooden’s former teammate Anderson Varejao when he signed his deal worth 6 years and somewhere between $42 and $50 million depending on bonuses, and incentives. Ironically, agent Dan Fegan is also in midst of both deals as he represents both players. Also the final year of Varejao’s deal is reportedly not fully guaranteed. Regardless, a lot of people had some sticker shock when it came to the Cavaliers and Varejao signing that deal together. Obviously, today, people are having similar sticker shock type reactions to Drew Gooden’s deal.
I think now a lot of people actually think Varejao’s deal is decent for the Cavaliers in hindsight. Will people be saying the same thing about Drew Gooden in a couple of years?
In 2009-10 Drew Gooden played in 70 games between Dallas and the Clippers. He saw his playing time increase as a member of the Clippers to the tune of about 8 minutes more per game (about 30 total.) When he was with the Mavericks, Gooden scored almost 9 points per game and added almost 7 rebounds per game. When he jumped to the Clippers Gooden scored almost 15 points per game and had over 9 rebounds per game on average. In Hollinger’s world, Gooden ends up with a PER of 16.95. Amongst all NBA power forwards, that gives Gooden 22nd place. That puts him above, Lamar Odom, Charlie Villanueva, Al Harrington, and both J.J. Hickson and Anderson Varejao.
Obviously, the Hollinger stats massively underrate defense. Also obviously, stats in a vacuum never tell a complete story as a team is a group of personalities and can’t be defined by adding up stats. At the same time, given how ridiculous salaries have become in the NBA and given Gooden’s abilities to come off the bench and score a bit, maybe his deal isn’t quite as bad as everyone seems to think. In the wake of Carlos Boozer, we were certainly happy to have Drew Gooden. In those days, the Cavaliers had to pony up $23 million over three years to secure him to a deal.
Let’s just say I am happy to have Anderson Varejao for his deal rather than Drew Gooden for his.

“The Milwaukee Bucks reportedly signed mister mullet patch, Drew Gooden, to a 5 year deal worth $32 million per season.”
WHOA! That’s more than LeBron’s gonna get…or a typo.
HAHA Tim…really….
I’m so glad it’s the Bucks and not us. I was dumbfounded when I read that this morning. Wow.
I wonder, is Drew Gooden some sort of secret genius?
Heh heh, sometimes I crack myself up.
off the subject of the drew gooden deal, but on the subject of FA in general…
i was thinking this morning as all this began, what if this really all is about money? i mean look at it this way, LeBron signed a 3 year deal to expire the same year the CBA is being re-negotiated. Basically setting himself up to sign the better SUPERMAX deal at the exact right moment so that he can be grandfathered in for 6 years making way more than he would had he signed the 6 year deal before.
this applies not only to LeBron but every other huge name FA on the market right now to.
am i way off here?
The thought of Drew Gooden cashing those paychecks makes my cubicle seem a little smaller today.
@ christopher – not really, if you look at Joe Johnson. (the Hawks are über-winners)
I loved his mullet-patch…that’s about it though
@#3 – Stanley: hilarious!
@ denny
i can see where your at with Johnson, but James, Bosh, Pierce, Nowitzki, Stoudemire all ending right before the CBA?
in LBJ’s case especially now that there is no “tour” and basically the teams have got an hour or so to meet with him?
i just feel very optimistic with the details have transpired over the past few days that this was never about moving somewhere else, it was about the SUPERMAX deal before the CBA.
just an opinion though.
Gooden’s contract is WAY better than Andy’s…. The Bucks are paying Gooden, it’s their problem. While we’re stuck paying Andy.
@Christopher, Whoa. You just blew my mind
Plus, those 6 million/year contracts are easy to move. That’s why, IMO, Gooden got that money. It’s kind of long for a contract, But when it’s expiring it can be combined with a 12/year guy and get a nice player.
UH OH, THE BUCKS GET GOODEN AND SALMON?
I AM FEARFUL OF THE POWER TEAM BEING ASSEMBLED IN WISCONSIN!
@ Matty
did you forget your sarcasm font?
Only in the NBA. Wow.
@Christopher
I saw the Joe Johnson deal and Goodens and immediately thought the same thing. Then came here and saw your comments. So even as LBJ sits talking with other teams I suddenly feel slightly more optomistic about him staying. I have a gut feeling in a week we will see about all the big names stay put with new max contracts (exception of bosh, who will get a sign and trade).
@tribefan30
in just reviewing the following points i am sitting here today not on the verge of insanity
– “the tour” was cancelled…teams will not be wining and dining Lebron for nights on end.
– meetings all taking place on our turf and have taken 2 hours to complete
– cavs get final meeting and only meeting on saturday
add that together with the other points on the money at stake and CBA effectivness and it equals to me it was never about leaving, it was always about getting a huge contract now when it serves him best.
@Christohper, No
@matty
i guess i am confused then…are you saying that my comments earlier really did “blow your mind” or that they are dumb?
i hope you dont think i am dumb. FRIEEEEEENDS.
Gooden’s contract isnt that crazy when you think about it. Teams like Milwaukee have to overpay to get the players they want, well, because nobody wants to go to Milwaukee. They overpaid him sure, but Ive seen worse contracts handed out. Brian Cardinal got a 30 million dollar deal from the Grizzlies a few years ago, and Gooden is Karl Malone compared to Brian Cardinal. Not to mention the Cavs were paying Larry Hughes 12 million a year to go 3-14 every night.
Interesting Chris, very interesting. I think Matty meant it in a good way. Some dude on Yahoo was a little ticked off at the Hawks for paying him that much in the first place, it was kinda funny.

Chris- I never thought about it like you presented. It is a good thing. It’s very interesting. BF4EVA!!!
whew…i will sleep better tonight.

Chris and Matty are BROS.
Like Mario Bros or Canseco Bros?
HAHA
Denny and mgbode are formally invited to our Camp Broseph Summit in Cleveland.
@mgbode, Breaking News.
We are holding our Camp Broseph Summit at the Einstein Bros. Bagels in Canton. Because we are, in fact, Einstein Bros. not Canseco or Mario, or even Menendez Bros.
why can’t we just eat Einstein Bros. bagels on Alomar Bros night at an Indians game while lamenting on the deaths of the Kennedy bros and sipping Christian Bros Brandy
we could then top it off by a trip to NASA to see one of the Orville Bros planes, while listening to the Allmon Bros mp3s, and deciding if next time we should go to the Ringling Bros, or just stay home and play Parker Bros games while watching Charlier Sheen and Emilio Estivez movies.
Dang, it was really flowing and Emilio Estevez screws it all up….AGAIN! I think Branyan made him change his last name.
HAHAHAH.
Sign me up. Can we listen to big Brother by kanYe followed by the Santana Brothers album recorded by Carlos Santana and Jorge Santana. We should invite Delmon and Dimitri and BJ and Justin.
@worstfan and I are Baker Bros. Sorry guys.
Well that does it. I will not consort with a Baker Bro. That is a line I will not cross.
Denny, you ruined our free sibling summit. I was going to make an announcement but I’m just not into it anymore….
We were going to meet in Philadelphia with Matthew, Joseph and Andrew Lawrence.

I’m too afraid to click that link. Too afraid there is either a Lawrence Bro. singing or that ‘Six’ from Blossom is somehow involved.
It is not from Blossom, now is it a Lawrence brother singing… It’s WAY better!
with 1/2 my fears assuaged, I clicked.
I have a sudden urge for a pedicure now?
