A must-read take on the Jim Brown saga: “It is simpleminded to think that we can take Jim Brown’s accomplishments on the field and separate them from Jim Brown the man. The same force, in my opinion, powered both. We cheered his passion and anger when it gave us greatness on the football field, but want to wag our fingers at the same passion and anger when it’s expressed in ways we don’t like.
The danger of nostalgia is that it washes away the lessons we should have learned from the past. Brown doesn’t come from a past with a better sport or a better world. He comes from a past where mistakes were made that we need to learn from.
That’s Jim Brown’s gift to us. He makes us examine ourselves, as we should whenever we bob around in the wake of a remarkable life.
No one gets out unscathed. Not Brown, not the team, not ourselves. Nor should we.” [Barry McBride/The OBR]

A plea to Jensen Lewis: “I want to like you. You’re the type of player I usually like. Crafty relief pitcher. Somewhat local, you’re from Cincinnati and from what I remember reading (but conveniently can’t find evidence of now) that you grew up and Indians fan, so you share my pain, somewhat.” [Deep Left Field]

Does Rich Rod finally have his “spread” guy? “I heard two reoccurring comments during the day. 1) Denard [Robinson] running the Spread against UConn looked like Madden 200whatever when you would put Mike Vick at quarterback and just run him around because his speed level was set at 99. 2) “I can’t believe Denard can throw the ball so accurately. He could barely complete a pass last year.” Denard not only throws a better spiral than Forcier, he worked a hell of a lot harder this offseason to learn the intricacies of the Spread and to learn where his receivers should receive the ball.” [Off-Tackle Empire]

And finally, is this year’s 53-man roster better than that of last? [Red Right 88]

Denard Robinson was very impressive.
Robinson is a good player. Maybe even a great one…time will tell.
But am I the only person who is finding the sudden love for Michigan somewhat annoying? Can we wait until they beat someone of consequence before we announce that “Michigan football is back”? If they are still undefeated in a month, I’ll start to believe it a little more…
I watched part of the game, and UConn had a chance to pull to within one score in the third quarter. Were it not for that fumble inside the 5, the win might not have looked all that impressive.
But it’s still a first game win for Michigan…which is noteworthy given their recent history. For the record, I hope they are on the way back up…it’s a lot more fun to watch the Buckeyes beat a decent/good Michigan team than embarrass a bad one like last year.
Thanks for linking the OBR piece on Jim Brown. It seems to be the most thoughtful look at the whole contoversy I’ve read.
I’ve been hesitant to comment on this whole story, mostly because its been hard to articulate my thoughts on it. I thought Barry McBride did a great job reminding us that a man is the sum of all of his experiences. That simple thought is what I’ve been feeling throughout all of this. Many of us much younger than Jim Brown just want him to throw his old world view away – “stop injecting race into everything!” I’m not sure he can and maybe he shouldn’t It’s good to be pushed into uncomfortable areas sometimes.
@ BuckeyeDawg – remember last year, when Tace Forcier and Matt Barkley were going to take over the world? It’s just early-season hyperbole. This year, it’s the return to greatness of Notre Dame and Michigan (who both will be better than last year, but not world-beaters by any stretch of the imagination).
Same can be said for the extreme love of Pryor. It’s early, and people are antsy to have some excitement. Instead, let’s get excited for Va Tech/Boise tonight. That should be a puntacular game.
“let’s get excited for Va Tech/Boise tonight”
I hear that – will be a nice bridge to Saturday’s OSU/DaU game.
I wish people would just learn that Big East defenses are terrible. It was so annoying last year listen to people talk about how great Cincinnati was because they scored a lot of points against the UConns of the world. Once Michigan plays a better defense, I’m sure Robinson won’t look so great.
As and ND fan I will fully admit the love has gone too far for a team that looked better but still wobbly against an ok Purdue team. I’m not allowing myself to sleep on Michigan this year, watching Denard Robinson run that offense gave me a few flash backs to the Pat White days at WVU. Next weeks game will tell a lot about both ND and Michigan.
