WFNY Podcast: Cavaliers and Steelers Week
October 15, 2010Pre-Game Intel – Browns vs. Steelers
October 15, 2010The CBJ Blogger Roundtable is a five-part series put together by Matt Wagner over at The Cannon, and starring the great people of the Blue Jackets blogosphere.
Matt wrote some questions, and we had a great turnout of answers despite everyone trying to get a handle on the team’s trip to Sweden last week. Please note that all of these answers came in BEFORE the team played the first two regular season games against the Sharks over in Stockholm. The ninth of ten questions of the roundtable is here after the jump. For the previous four installments:
Part 1 – The Cannon
Part 2 – The Dark Blue Jacket
Part 3 – The Jackets Blog
Part 4 – Jackets Required
QUESTION #9: Who do you see pushing for callus from the Jackets’ farm system in Springfield?
Tom Felrath, The Dark Blue Jacket: John Moore, David Savard and Tomas Kubalik are the logical choices coming out of camp. All three made it to the final cuts before getting shipped down to Springfield, so logic dictates that they will be among the first in line to advance to Columbus if they keep improving their games and the need arises for their talents.
Dan Parker, Waiting For Next Year: I think it’s going to be the blue-liners. John Moore, David Savard, and Grant Clitsome have all had training camp stretches with the big team that show they aren’t completely out of their depth at this level. They also have the potential to be better suited to playing Arniel’s system that calls for more athletic and offensively-minded defensemen. Moore can skate and pass, Savard can do the same, and Clitsome hasn’t looked bad when he’s gotten some minutes, all things considered. And, there’s certainly going to most likely be potential for them to get the call, as this defense will probably be shaky for awhile.
Mike MacLean, The Cannon: With Wilson and MacKenzie making the team, the forwards in Springfield who are in line for callups are likely Matt Calvert (energy, bottom six); Tomas Kana (offense, top six); Maksim Mayorov (offense, top six) and Tom Sestito (toughness, bottom six). On defense, John Moore, David Savard, Grant Clitsome and Nick Holden are the likeliest to get the call to the NHL if needed. David LeNeveu had a strong preseason with Columbus, and given that Gustaf Wesslau hasn’t been able to play yet due to injury, he’s the best bet for first goaltender recalled if Mason or Garon go down with an injury.
Lee Auer, The Jackets Blog: The most obvious guys are players that spent time in Columbus in the last half of last season, but also those that nearly earned a spot this season. Most notably, Tomas Kubalik. Kubalik had the best camp, hands down, of any player sent to Springfield, he will certainly see time in Columbus this year. Not only will Kubalik get a call-up, but so will both David Savard and John Moore. While Savard isn’t the “name” that Moore is, every blog and news report I read raved about Savard especially late in the pre-season. I think we can expect those 3 names on the back of Columbus sweaters this season.
TopShelf, Jackets Required: Defense: Clitsome, Moore and Savard. Forwards: Atkinson & Calvert
Andy Newman, The Cannon: Tomas Kubalik should be the first forward up when there is an open spot, and it’s really a shame that he’s not already here after his pre-season performance. The two other players I look to have a fire in their eye are Matt Calvert and John Moore. Arguably the Jackets’ top two prospects, neither had an outstanding camp, but can quickly turn it on at any moment. Hopefully the pieces continue to fall into place for all three of these players.
Red Dog, Red Dog Rambling: Savard, Guenin, Moore, Calvert, Kubalik, Murray, and others whose names escape me at the moment
Jeff Little, The Hockey Writers: Kubalik was this year’s Calvert, but has the size and willingness to play in the slot. Calvert could see some time as well. The prime candidates, of course, are Savard and Moore. I disagree with those who say that Moore had a poor camp. I thought he looked very good. Not out of the question to see Wesslau (once healthy) or Leneveu up, depending on Mason and Garon. Garon is too slow to react, IMHO, and one of these two could make a run. Machesney is not a factor.
Matt Wagner, The Cannon: David Savard and John Moore are probably the two guys at the top of the depth chart for defensemen. I think that Tomas Kubalik actually could have started the year in Columbus, with the way he performed in the pre-season, and if coach Arniel decides to return to the “three scoring line” plan, don’t be surprised if he’s on his way back to Ohio. I’m also still a fan of what Matt Calvert could bring to this team.
