Open Thread: Browns vs Giants

Written By:  Rick   |  Category:  Cleveland Browns   |  Comments:   98

Well here it is- Monday Night Football in Cleveland! There is little left to say in advance of the game tonight. We’ve already made predictions, and guessed at what might have to happen for Brady Quinn to see the field. The bottom line is this- we all want a Cleveland win! So I suppose there’s only one question left….

Hey Cleveland- Are you ready for some football!?!?!!!

Obviously, the most important question of the evening is when (if) Quinn gets to play.

That said, the second most important question is – given that it’s MNF, what are the rules for the reappearance of the TK NK graphic?

    Dear Browns,

Congratulations for making it to Monday Night Football. A great time, a great atmosphere. You’re in the limelight. Please play good, no stupid penalties, please tackle, please catch the ball.

I beg you not to embarrass us tonight. I can’t take it anymore, aren’t you tired of being the laughing stock of the league for so many years?

If you could please relay these messages.

Romeo – Show some enthusiasm, don’t make dumb decisions, grow some balls act like an NFL coach

DA – You screw up and lose your starting job you will be treated like Tim Couch.

Braylon – Catch the damn ball. Shut the hell up on the field.

Winslow – Make sure you have ice on those jewels.

  • 3. October 13, 2008

    - “Brady”
    - “Peyton”
    - “First Rounder”

We can add more as needed. Place all requests!

  • 4. October 13, 2008

And we already have a “Peyton”…

  • 5. October 13, 2008

illegal formation on the first play of the game… ugh.

  • 6. October 13, 2008

settled for a FG, but I’ll take it at this point

  • SambofromOH
    7. October 13, 2008

Hey, we have a lead! 3-0 Browns!

  • 8. October 13, 2008

No, that was pretty disappointing settling for yet another field goal. I am not saying go for it, since it was way too long to try it. But you have to think, coming out of the gate with a huge gain from DA to Edwards, who have both been under fire lately, only to lead to a measly FG against the defending champs? Kind of takes the air out of that great first drive.

  • 9. October 13, 2008

    INT!!!!!!!!!!!1

  • SambofromOH
    10. October 13, 2008

All right Brodney Pool! INT on the 5!

  • 11. October 13, 2008

Browns score, then a Giants turnover? What’s going on?

  • ClemJax
    12. October 13, 2008

So who had Eli in the “throws the first interception” pool? Anybody? Bueller? Bueller?

  • Regis
    13. October 13, 2008

Man, I don’t have ESPN so I can’t catch the game so I’m reading the results online at SportsLine.com. OHHHHH INTERCEPTION BRODNEY POOL!!!!! WHOOO YES FINALLY!!!!

  • 14. October 13, 2008

Holy crap, an interception. Who is this team on the field right now?

  • ClemJax
    15. October 13, 2008

    Wait…Browns Wildcat?

  • 16. October 13, 2008

Okay I am still at work and am not watching it yet, but it seems from the Gamecast that DA is accurate so far. Is that right? I can’t believe seeing all these completions so far.

  • 17. October 13, 2008

so…let me get this straight. if the WR is on the line of scrimmage, the DB can blast him while the ball is in the air?

Also…another illegal motion. third pre-snap penalty in the quarter.

  • ClemJax
    18. October 13, 2008

Can we nominate “Browns pre-snap penalties” for honorary TK NK? Or is that going to be a little much for our livers tonight?

  • 19. October 13, 2008

    ClemJax, sounds good to me!

Missed FG isn’t great, but we’re looking decent so far. Decent is a goal, right?

  • ClemJax
    20. October 13, 2008

If by decent you mean “not embarrassed on national TV,” then I think that might be considered at least a moral victory, no?

  • SambofromOH
    21. October 13, 2008

1 FG made and 1 missed. I thought we werent supposed to get settled ’til the 3rd drive?

  • 22. October 13, 2008

Jacobs just carried Andra Davis four yards into the end zone…

I wonder whether manning trusts his wide receivers or not.

  • 24. October 13, 2008

Drinking Magic Hat #9 here. That is my go-to elixir. Giants appear to have woken up. Let’s see if the Browns can respond. Anyone betting?

  • ClemJax
    25. October 13, 2008

OK, microcosm of this entire team this season…they have a great play, put the Giants on their heels…and they can’t get organized and have to call a timeout.

  • 26. October 13, 2008

OK… I should post negative things more often. 70 yard pass play and the Browns can’t get lined up to follow that play and call time out.

  • whipjacka
    27. October 13, 2008

I predict that the Browns will gain more yards tonight than the first four combined

Does anyone think that was a good call by the refs? It looked pretty dumb to me in the fuzzy replay they showed.

Aim gun. Shoot self in foot.

  • 36. October 13, 2008

It looked ticky tack… on top of that, it is a bang bang play between the illegal contact and the tip of the ball away from Eli.

  • Regis
    37. October 13, 2008

I just came back from eating and I saw the score 17-14 in favor of the Browns. I’m so happy right now, lets hope they can keep the lead until the game ends.

  • ClemJax
    48. October 13, 2008

Gorsh Dang It…I know we’re doing well tonight, but we’ve been screaming about coaching all season. What the &(*)#&$)*( is up with all these penalties? If we weren’t consistently getting huge plays, we’d be destroying ourselves right now.

  • 49. October 13, 2008

This has to be the least disciplined Browns team I’ve ever seen….I’m getting a D. Rudd helmet toss type of feel to this one…

  • 65. October 13, 2008

Sorry 35-14….but was it worth calling a time out to come up with that 2 point play? You couldn’t just send the offense out there and run that??? My guess is the Giants would have been just as disorganized….maybe they would have been forced to call time out

  • SambofromOH
    66. October 13, 2008

A guy called into All Bets Are Off and said the Browns would win by three touchdowns. Silly me, I thought the guy was crazy.

  • 67. October 13, 2008

I need that elf cut out for my sports room!!!

  • 68. October 13, 2008

Holy crap I cannot believe this game. Maybe we should have had our bye in Week 1. It seems people got healthy, got some practice time together, and suddenly we have a team again.

I don’t even know what to say. I almost feel bad saying something negative, but maybe they need to practice holding still before the hike this week. That is the only bad thing I can say. They have been awesome, creating turnovers by the defense and Anderson hasn’t thrown to the wrong team yet. Amazing1

  • Tapin
    79. October 13, 2008

Rick #73: Yep, easily the most impressive stat of the game IMO: Zastudil: 0 punts for 0 yards.

How the heck does *this* team do *that*? How can we make sure it happens another eleven times or so?

There is no way you can spin it, the Browns squarely won this game with great defense and offense.

I thought for a second Stuart Scott was going to ask Braylon “You’re standing 15 yards from the quarterback, how do you jump offsides?”

    87. October 14, 2008

Notice espn never told defense player of the game and showed a couple quick press interviews then left the game at that. Guess it was to shocking for them. After they degraded the browns in the press box all night.

  • Jon
    88. October 14, 2008

There are two types of Cleveland fans…

Those who enjoy our winning and our always optimistic about our continuing success.

And those that, even when we play our hearts out and win a big game, still find themselves pessimistic. (see above) Some might argue that this is because they’ve got there hopes up only too many times to be let down.

Hopefully this is a >true< turnaround game for us. So how much of a reprieve does Anderson get… since 5 hours ago everyone I know wanted Quinn to start; Anderson even got boo’d on his way on the field.

  • 89. October 14, 2008

Jon, I think this gives DA a huge leash now. I was one of the people hoping to see Quinn tonight, but Anderson was awesome. I needed a QB for my fantasy team next week as my two other QBs will be on bye. I had picked up Quinn earlier this week thinking he would be coming into the game and then starting next time. I waived him for DA tonight.

It was an amazing performance tonight. I don’t agree with DCBucks that this is a one time thing. Look at the Giants last year. Their season was going down the toliet, the coach was on the hot seat, and then one game; actually one goal line stance against the Redskins changed everything. One game, one moment can make a difference.

The Skins lost to the pathetic Rams Sunday. You don’t think we can play better than the Rams? I think our Defense played aggressive and put pressure on the Eli. We can do the same to Campbell. Bring on the Skins and a 3-3 record!!!!

  • whipjacka
    90. October 14, 2008

Considering that we stole one that everyone thought we would win, I think it is possible (not necessarily probable) for the browns to go 9-7. I think that will be good enough to go to the playoffs

  • B-bo
    91. October 14, 2008

Not to be all Winston Wolfe here, but let’s slow down a second. Amazing performances all around, but don’t pretend this was some Earth-shifting win. No punts, DA over 300 yards, opportunistic secondary? All very nice. But this team MUST clean up the ridiculous penalties–everyone wants to overlook them because of the final result, but 9 times out of ten those silly mistakes will get you beat–we’ve seen that before. And there were still far too many drops for my liking. And getting only 3 points off those first two turnovers isn’t going to get it done most days. And don’t forget, the giants O was shredding through the D in the fourth quarter until Eazy-E makes what was an excellent play. Yes, it was a 21-point win in a game 99% of those who follow football thought we would lose, but it doesn’t mean we should put the blinders on.

Also, keep in mind that, even with the big win, the record is still 2-3. Lose in D.C. this coming week and this win suddenly means a lot less. Yes, the Skins lost to the Rams–at home. You don’t think they will be fired up by that? Or that Dallas falling apart and the Giants losing won’t give Washington some added incentive? Add to that the very serious (likely?) letdown factor for the Browns after a week of feeling good about this one and reading their own press clippings, plus the short prep week, and this next game is FAR from a gimme. And is anyone truly convinced that DA is suddenly “back”? And for how long? Was last night enough to make him the guy we want back there (suddenly there’s NO talk of BQ), or is it sell high time on this last day of trading? I bet the Vikes, Chiefs, or even Cowboys would give up a nice draft pick for him after last night.

Again, HUGE thrilling win–loved it, enjoyed it, celebrated it like a rock star–but it’s one win. Are we now supposed to forget all the problems this team has had for the past 10 weeks?

  • 92. October 14, 2008

    TK NK!!!!!

  • DCBucks
    93. October 14, 2008

B-bo you said it very well. The Browns’ defense played better last night, but take away the 3 INTs and you find that the Giants’ offense moved the ball at will. I love how everyone forgets that the Browns were the worst offensive team in football until last night. It’s one game people. They have too many injuries, and a very real lack of talent on the defensive side of the ball to keep this up. Throw in a head coach with the demeanor of a bored slug, and you get 8 false start penalties. I’ve predicted a 4-10 season since day one, and I stick by it. I hope I’m wrong. I really do, but I’m a realist.

I thoroughly enjoyed watching last nights victory, I’d forgotten how good it feels.

I think the return of Ryan Tucker really help stabilize the offensive line last night. They deserve the game ball. Any NFL QB has a chance of making plays when he has time to throw. I’m glad DA didn’t waste the opportunity.

  • P@
    94. October 14, 2008

It’s tough to go 4-10 in the National Football League, where 16 games are played during the regular season. DCBucks, let’s not forget that this team we saw last night was the Browns team that analysts and fans were expecting from the very beginning of the season. A team that is mediocre on defense and stellar on offense. The offensive performance, minus the penalties, was pretty incredible especially considering the absence of Winslow. The defense got reamed for most of the game, and were definitely a little bit lucky. The team is finally getting healthy though, so I think we’re going to see a very different Browns team from here on out than what we saw in the first four weeks. I don’t know that they’ll be able to stop Clinton Portis next week, but I think it will be a close game and certainly not an easy win for the Skins.

  • SambofromOH
    95. October 14, 2008

Keep in mind that most teams build up injuries over the course of the season. We on the other hand started out injured and working towards getting healthy. We are almost there.

Last night was a perfect example of Mel Tucker’s defensive scheme. Let them get the yards as long as you get a turnover. I have been nervous since he took over because you wont always get those interceptions/ fumble recoveries but it did work last night.

The team has come together some but I just hope they can keep it together on a short week like this.

  • DCBucks
    96. October 14, 2008

Yeah thanks for catching that P@, I meant 4-12. A team that went 10-6 against a weak schedule. They failed to make the playoffs because they choked against take your pick pitiful teams (Arizona, Cincinnati, Oakland). All of a sudden the “analysts”/”experts” pick the Browns to go to the Super Bowl. Did the same analysts look at our schedule this year? Did they see the team play a game with the new defensive personnel and coordinator? Did they watch DA play like ass when it mattered most? Have they beat Pittsburgh?

All the chest thumping and crowing from Browns fans is ludicrous. Face it. This team has done little on the field to show they’re a contender. 4-12. I stand by it, and will hope for it after the Washington loss.

It will help with the draft, and drive a nail in Crennel’s piano sized coffin.

“Let them get the yards as long as you get a turnover” is not a defensive scheme. It’s a hope and prayer. Baltimore has a defensive scheme. “No yards. No points. Make them cry to mommy.”

    Thoughts:
*Nice to see we’re actually blitzing – but can we blitz up the middle once?
    *Jerome Harrison used – finally
    *Back to solid playcalling
*Romeo still looks bad – what’s with the penalties
*How come we didnt go for 2 at the 26-14 touchdown?… I think that was a goof.

  • SambofromOH
    98. October 14, 2008

    @bridgecrosser

I noticed where the blitzes were coming from too. I wasnt a surprise that thier running backs were getting good yards per carry because we were sending corners, safeties and linebackers around the edges while they ran between the tackles.
