03/05 Morning Minute: Snowstorms and Shortstops
Written By: Scott | Category: Cleveland Indians, Minutes | Comments: 2Why do I have a feeling that the Ohio Primary and awful, awful weather in the Cleveland area will make a wonderful filler for the lack of sports news to discuss today? And why do I have the feeling that this weather will be the exact same setting for the Tribe’s opening day on March 31st?
It will be quite the shellshock for the Indians as they get to galavant around Florida’s Chain of Lakes complex, where it will be 72 degrees, only to come back here where one can barely see 20 feet in front of them thanks to a wonderful combination of snow and fog.
While we may have a quarterback controversy brewing, how long will it be before we start hearing of a shortstop controversy? Asdrubal Cabrera got the start at short yesterday, with Jhonny Peralta getting the day off. There is no denying the fact that Peralta is one of the more powerful middle infielders in the game, clubbing 21 home runs last season. But his fielding is right up there with Joe Borowski’s pitching when it comes to making fans cover their eyes in fear.
Though Cabrera had an erroneous throw in yesterday’s game, the way he may remind fans of Omar Vizquel will not make life easy for Jhonny P. Remember, short is Cabrera’s natural position – and remember how quick he caught on at the end of last season. But don’t think that isn’t a concern as much as it was a blessing.
Defense isn’t an issue with Cabrera. If there’s a concern, it’s how quickly success came to him.
“We want to make sure he keeps his feet on the ground,” said Wedge. “I don’t want him getting ahead of himself.”

Drive safe today. It’s a messy one.

Hindsight is 20/20, but we should’ve kept Omar & played Peralta at 3rd base.
I couldn’t agree more Mark. Letting Omar walk out the door is one of the few moves I have disagreed with Shapiro about.
