After a brief Sunday respite, the 12 Days of a Cleveland Fan Christmas returns! Congratulations to Bridgecrosser who won Saturday’s contest! And for the love of Pete (whoever that is) can we please remember to follow instructions on the entries?
I’m even going to tell you what today’s prize is in advance. In honor of who is sure to be Cleveland’s leading scorer tonight…from the WFNY collection….we give you the Phil Dawson Captain Clutch shirt!!
Once again, the details for entering…
Each day of the contest, we will ask a question for you to answer. Respond to the giveaway post with a comment formatted like this- restate the question, then answer it in EXACTLY 64 words. (Last year of a major Cleveland championship.)
- You may only enter once each day. You are free to comment on each other’s answers, however.
- The winner will be chosen at random from the qualifying entries. Winners will be notified the following day by email (make sure the email address you registered to comment with is a real one!) You must be at least 18 years old to win, and only one winner per household during this giveaway please.
The prizes range from tickets to the Tribe home opener, to books, to jerseys, and even a few WFNY items thrown in there too. (Yes, shameless self-promotion!) No complaining about which prize you win, those have been randomly selected for specific days of the contest. Sound good? Hey it’s free stuff, how picky can you get?! All answers have to be submitted by midnight, Cleveland time. Don’t worry about having the same answer as someone else, just put it in your own words. It isn’t a contest to see who is a better writer. Remember though…EXACTLY 64 words!
With that said…Here’s today’s question to respond to:
What was the best trade in Cleveland Sports history?

As a huge fan of the Captain Clutch t-shirt, here is my entry:
What was the best trade in Cleveland Sports history?
The best trade in Cleveland sports history was Danny Ferry’s three team swap that brought in Wally, Delonte, Big Ben, and Joe Smith. The trade allowed the Cavaliers to dump Larry Hughes’ attitude and contract while bringing in actual basketball players and maintaining salary cap flexibility in 2010. The trade also signified the front office’s willingness to bring in players to surround LeBron James.
What was the best trade in Cleveland Sports history?
Colon for Grady Sizemore, Cy Young winner Cliff Lee, and Brandon Phillips was a great trade. Although in hindsight trading Phillips may not have been a great move, we really did not have room for Phillips at the time. Nonetheless, Shapiro turned Colon into 2 of my favorite players. Hopefully the Sabaithia trade brings some of the same magic with LaPorta in the future.
What was the best trade in Cleveland Sports history?
Not only is this the best trade in Cleveland sports history, it is the best trade in the history of man kind. Two words – Bartolo Colon. Shapiro turned one player who wasn’t going to be on our team anymore into 2 all-stars and 1 soon to be all-star, albeit for a different team (thank you, Eric Wedge). Now that’s what I call a steal
Didn’t have room for Phillips? They kept a 30-year old Ramon Vazquez instead of him…
What was the best trade in Cleveland Sports history?
Shapiro dealing Colon for Grady Sizemore, Cliff Lee, Brandon Phillips, and Lee Stevens. This deal is so good because Colon was past his peak (see what he has done since) and Cliff and Grady I believe just got a lot of hardware for their seasons. Phillips is also good, and would make our infield one of the best if he was still a Cleveland Indian.
What Was The Best Trade In Cleveland History?
We could talk about Colon baseball or basketball but to me the best trade in Cleveland history just happened and we are now just seeing the fruit of it. Trading draft picks to move to number 22 and select Brady Quinn will in the end being Cleveland’s best. Finally our first real quarterback since Bernie.

Since the Colon trade has been mentioned several times already, I’ll say the best trade is one of the most recent. The Cavs acquired their starting point guard and second banana to LeBron, Mo Williams. All they had to give up was a 33-year-old Joe Smith and the cocky benchwarmer, Damon Jones. This trade has us off to a franchise-record start.
What was the best trade in Cleveland Sports history?
The best trade in Cleveland sports history was Willie Blair and Eddie Taubensee for Kenny Lofton. Lofton went onto anchor the Tribe’s leadoff spot for three years (and eventually returning for another three) causing havoc on the base paths and leading the Indians to their first World Series since 1954, while Taubensee proved to be a mediocre catcher and Blair a journeyman bullpen tool.
What was the best trade in Cleveland sports history?
Though I absolutely loved both of Danny Ferry’s last big trades (Mo, Ben, Delonte, Wally, and Joe), I will have to go with embattled Brown’s GM Phil Savage’s last BIG trade. That’s right, I’m talking about Shaun Rogers for Bodden and a pick. Any trade that brings us a Pro Bowl caliber D-lineman is a plus, and an anchor like Rogers gets an A++.
What was the best trade in Cleveland Sports history?
Harry Chiti was traded by the Indians to the Mets for a player to be named later. Said player to be named later was Harry Chiti who returned to the Indians organization two months later. There is no trade in Cleveland sports history that more epitomizes the nature of Cleveland sports then this one. He never played in the majors again after the trade.
What was the best trade in Cleveland sports history?
The Browns trading for Dallas’ 2007 22nd pick was the greatest trade in Cleveland history. While we haven’t seen the benefits yet (I’m confident we will), it immediately put the Browns back in the spotlight and gave the entire city hope. Thomas and Quinn in the same draft – it looked like we had most of our offensive problems solved in less than four hours.
What was the best trade in Cleveland Sports history?
I hate to repeat what has been said so many times already, but it has to be the Colon trade. If I remember right didn’t Milton Bradley come along in the trade too, or was that a separate trade with the expos? Either way, anytime you can get franchise building talent in a trade it’s a plus. Danny Ferry’s moves are up there too.
For anyone wondering on how Leigh Bodden was doing this year….1 INT, 10 PD. Hard to argue with TBrown
What was the best trade in Cleveland Sports history?
The best trade in Cleveland history has to be the trade that sent CC packing for a package of at least 2 top tier prospects. When our super stars leave we NEVER get anything for them. This time Shapiro actually admitted that he wouldn’t be able to sign a guy and wanted to get something in return. Matt LaPorta, your time is now sir.
What was the best trade in Cleveland Sports history?
The best trade in Cleveland history was the trade that sent Rocky Colavito to the Tigers! Why would you want to burden your fans with the ups and downs of winning championships, only to eventually become average again. No! If you just keep losing, people will appreciate an average record just as much as a title! A curse on all of your franchises, Cleveland!
What was the best trade in Cleveland Sports history?
Hands down it has to be Andre Miller for Darius Miles. Not only did this trade bless Cleveland sports fans with Darius “I only speak Jive” Miles presence and lack of game, but also allowed us to be soooo bad that David Stern had no choice but to rig the draft so that Lebron James ended up a Cavalier. Darius made Lebron James possible!
Oh yea- best darius miles youtube clip ever- too bad it doesn’t have subtitles cause it needs it.

What was the best trade in Cleveland Sports history?
The trade of Félix Fermín and Reggie Jefferson to the Seattle Mariners for Omar Vizquel. Omar would wear the number 13 at the corner of Ontario and Carnegie for the 11 years, winning eight gold gloves; making three all-star appearances. He was the heart of the great 90’s teams that brought baseball back in Cleveland, and star of the Mesa feud and Tri-C commercials.
I cant believe no one has mentioned the Rockers trading Michelle Edwards to Seattle for Nina Bjedov…
What was the best trade in Cleveland Sports history?
Tom Mastny to Japan for cash. Shapiro sent a message to the team that even players with no actual trade value, can still be traded. Where was this policy when Borowski was throwing 78 mph meatballs to David Ortiz? This trade can only be topped, if Shapiro follows the WFNY fan suggestion and sends Delucci to Cuba for a goat and bag of rice.
What was the best trade in Cleveland Sports history?
The blockbuster trade last year with the cavs was clearly the greatest for one simple reason: Delonte West. Redz is the hardest Cavalier, and he is pretty much the smoothest dude I have ever known to exist (aside from bugs bunny of course). His addition made the cavaliers instant contenders in the eastern conference. Knick knack patty whack give a dog a bone, DING!
@ Scott… if my memory serves me right, I think the string of no hitting for a few games, AAA, injury, then around .200 hitting when he came back maybe have limited the “room” to keep him around. Obviously hindsight is 20/20, and I’ve always said I would have loved to have had him in a Tribe uniform (obviously).
Besides don’t take it so literal, I was working with 64 words
“What was the best trade in Cleveland Sports history?”
My favorite trade in Cleveland History is the trade the Indians made for the Twins Dave Winfield in 1994. Having traded for him and then two weeks later the strike ending the season that year, the Indians instead took the Twins Executives out to a dinner instead and paid the bill to settle the trade. I, like many others, also enjoy a good dinner.
wow I should have reread that before I posted it…oh well it’s 64 words i’m over it
“What was the best trade in Cleveland Sports history?”
I think Danny Ferry’s last batch of trades have been outstanding.
First, we have:
Crap = Delonte + Wally + Joe Smith + Ben Wallace.
Then: Joe Smith + Bling = Mo Williams (question: do the plus and equal signs count as words… hmm.. I don’t think so…)
And then you have to (maybe) figure that Wally + his lovely expiring contract = something big, tall, and meaty.
Not bad, not bad.
