Wastes of Jersey

Written By:  Craig   |  Category:  Cleveland Browns   |  Comments:   62

No, this is not a post about a state near New York City.  This, my friends, is a title that could easily summarize a large portion of the souvenire shop at Cleveland Browns Stadium.  It describes the scary things that we all have hanging in our closets next to the skeletons and Tom Cruise (allegedly, or something.) I am talking about Cleveland Browns player jerseys that we have seen, worn, paid for, and ultimately regretted.

Now, there are some rules to this little game.  First of all, to be included on this list, the jersey had to be sold in a sanctioned fashion by the Cleveland Browns.  Custom jerseys don’t count.  My friend Dan wanted to buy Marc Edwards’ jersey back in 1999, but that wouldn’t count.  My brother ordered Gary Baxter’s jersey custom.  Doesn’t count toward the list.  We all love using Spergon Wynn as a punchline to whatever kinds of Browns jokes we are making, but the fact remains that the team shops never sold his shirt.  The player doesn’t have to be awful, but their tenure with the Browns probably was.  Either that or it was cut too short as they made a mad dash out of town leaving us holding the bag and another wasted jersey in our closets.

Got it?  Good.  Here are the names that the WFNY staff, my brother and I were able to come up with.

In no particular order…
Chris Speilman
Tim Couch
Kevin Johnson
Gary Baxter
LeChuck Bentley
Kelly Holcomb
Tim Couch
Terry Kirby
Charlie Frye
Reuben Droughns
William Green
Lee Suggs
Jamir Miller
Antonio Bryant
Willie McGinest
Quincy Morgan
Dennis Northcutt
Jeff Faine
Courtney Brown
Gerard Warren
Trent Dilfer
Jeff Garcia
Ross Verba
James Jackson
Dwayne Rudd
Help me out people.  Add to the list.  Keep in mind the rules, though.  You can’t give me guys who never had jerseys in a real rotation in the stores.  Also, if I included someone in the list who shouldn’t be there, let me know that too.

    Chris Speilman

    Soon to add- Braylon Edwards

  • 2. December 18, 2008

How did Braylon not make the list? That was the inspiration for the list…

Also, is this just after the team returned to the league? There are a whole other set of jerseys to add if not…

  • 3. December 18, 2008

    Baxter’s on the list.

My buddy has a Josh Booty #12, but I’m pretty sure he had that made as well…

What about Andre “Bad Moon” Rison? I think they sold his jersey.

  • 5. December 18, 2008

    Mike Junkin?

    6. December 18, 2008

I know someone who had a Wohlabaugh 64 jersey (which he later changed to a Joe DeLamielleure jersey). No word on if the original DW jersey was custom-made or store-bought.

Craig Powell, just going back to #1 picks… But this begs the “new Browns only” or “all time Browns” question.

  • Chad
    8. December 18, 2008

Errict Rhett #23, and Rison was #80.

  • 9. December 18, 2008

oh, we’re doing 99-current Browns only?

c’mon Craig, set some ground rules or this could get ugly.

  • 10. December 18, 2008

Well, the idea was just since 1999 originally, but I failed to mention that in the post. My bad.

  • 11. December 18, 2008

Yeah, I’ll pull out the Paul McDonald jersey…and it won’t be pretty!!

i heart my tim couch fleece.

on a (kind of) different subject: i love how excited people got 2 seasons ago when they could break out their lofton jersey’s again. you saw people who have obviously..er..gained a lil heft, since his original tenure, trying to squeeze into the 5 year old jersey

I pulled out Rhett in the discussion yesterday, and Craig veto-ed me! Boooo, Craig!

Tim Couch is so bad that he’s listed twice.

  • 15. December 18, 2008

    way to drop the ball.

    Daylon McCutcheon?
    Darrin Chiaverini?
    Orpheus Roye?

    16. December 18, 2008

For the record, I once owned a Tim Couch jersey, sold at a garage sale for $4.

Also, as I’ve told many people, I sold my “C. Brown” 92 jersey to a drunk guy in a bar for $40, literally 10 minutes AFTER he had suffered his season-ending injury in 2004.

  • 17. December 18, 2008

    Wali Rainer?

    18. December 18, 2008

I can’t hate on Roye, km. He was solid for many years in a Browns uni.

  • 19. December 18, 2008

    Anthony Henry?

this is all I can think about now. so much for productivity

  • 20. December 18, 2008

    Frisman Jackson?
    Ross Verba?

i’ve never bought a Browns jersey in my life (never will either) so i’m not sure what they sell in the team shop.

  • Chad
    21. December 18, 2008

Why did Rhett get vetoed? I was just going to say Anthony Henry too. Logo Athletic sold both of their jerseys.

Verba’s already on the list, km. :-)

I have seen the worst of all time this year: #86 Leslie Shepard. Not kiiding. Also saw Chiavarini as well and several Courtney Brown’s. Anyone who owns a Gerard Warren jersey should off themselves.

  • 24. December 18, 2008

Did they sell Donte Stallworth jerseys?

  • 25. December 18, 2008

    Chaun Thompson?
    Terrelle Smith?

    i think i’m done now.

@DP – he may have been medicore while wearing the orange and poo, but I will forever remember his altercation with the official after the eye-flag incident.

  • 26. December 18, 2008

wait — that wasn’t Orpheus Roye that got hit in the eye was it.

    #25 [redacted]

  • 27. December 18, 2008

#22 DP – so he is. maybe if the author had put the list in some semblance of order i could’ve quickly located Mr. Verba.

    0-2 Craig… 0-2.

I own a #85 Kevin Johnson jersey, and I think it was sold in stores because I got it for Christmas and my parents aren’t smart enough to do custom jerseys. He had a 1000 yard season, which back in 2000 when I was 13 was enough for make me to make him my favorite, but I think it was by the next season he was put on the inactive list and then cut because Butch Davis didn’t like him, and we never heard from him again

  • S-Dub
    29. December 18, 2008

Daylon was a good corner for us so I don’t think he belongs on the list. Fact is that it’s sad that we even have a list. Could we add Andra Davis to that list? Well we certaintly would have to add Andre Davis too.

I don’t think even Stallworth himself has a “Stallworth” Browns jersey. Dude hasn’t hardly played!

  • 39. December 18, 2008

McCutcheon didn’t qualify in my book because he was good until he got hurt. Same with Anthony Henry. He was a good player and the Browns just didn’t resign him.

Errict Rhett would qualify, but I couldn’t remember if he had a jersey in stores.

Curtis Enis is a possible one, but I don’t remember if he had a jersey.

Travis Prentice is one that Scott just brought up in Google chat.

The first jersey I bought was a Jamir Miller jersey that was purchased after he was already out of football, but it was cheap and at the time, he was the only guy the Browns had who had made the Pro Bowl.

When I decided I was going to spring the cash to retire the Miller jersey a couple years back the volatility and sheer suckitude of the Browns forced me to do the only thing I could – go old school and buy a Jim Brown jersey.

I fear that jersey hasn’t had really good karma though (maybe it was the domestic abuse) so I may spring for a new one and the obvious choice is one B. Kosar #19.

What a great post, just about sums up my Browns jerseys:
    Couch
    C. Brown
    Suggs
    Detmer
    Frye

I will never buy another jersey. Ever.

Might tape my Frye one up to look like Scott Player on Sunday, but I’m not sure.

McCutcheon was servicable as a 2nd CB in his prime. Injuries shortened his career, but he wasn’t good at any point. Probably not bad enough to make this list.

for some reason, i just hated that guy. i’m over it now. Terry Cousin is my new Daylon McCutcheon.

    man i hate that guy.

I bought a Joe Jurevicious #84 a couple of years ago as well. I figure he’s a hometown player who will be finishing his careers w/ the Browns. I won’t be ashamed of it years after he retires.

For sure add Braylon. When we go to the game on Sunday, I’ll proudly wear my Braylon jersey with the tape over the name. I’m debating on ‘Crybaby’, ‘Butterfingers’, or ‘Trade Me’.

True Story. I was living in Hoboken, NJ when the Browns first came back. I owned a Tim Couch jersey and wore it to the bars to watch the games. After one game when it was clear that Tim Couch was not the answer, I was walking home from the bar in a state of utter disgust. I took off my Couch jersey and just threw it on the ground somewhere.

A few weeks later I was walking around town and I see a local bum wearing the Tim Couch jersey passed out against a building!!!

I can neither confirm or deny if it was actually Tim Couch

I came damn close to getting Big Money Warren’s jersey, and im very glad i didn’t. Then almost got L’Chuck’s Bentleys, then he almost died. Glad I have a Kosar jersey to keep me from getting any of these losers’ jerseys. Was on the fence about Big Joe Thomas, still waiting on that, has not impressed this year.
Midseason really felt like I really needed a brown jersey to compliment my white #19, but in the store, ready to buy one, literally thought. . . love how Lewis plays but he’s still half Raven and killed the Browns way too many times, Braylon sucks, DA is overrated and will be out of the league in a couple years, BQ hasn’t even played yet, Thomas looks like he’s already loosing it, McGunist is a Pat at heart and can’t play, Davis and DQwell stink, . . .

How about Madre Hill or Travis Prentice? Percy “Ball Hawk” Ellsworth? Was there ever an Earl Little jersey made?

A couple more: how about Ricky Dudley? Lomas Brown? There was definitely a JOHN JURKOVICH #67 jersey in circulation in 1999. Did Jim Pyne get an honorary first Brown jersey? Got those names are depressing, as is the fact that there are neural pathways in my brain that readily produce them
