Report: Romeo Crennel Fired
And there’s the next shoe. WKYC reports that the Browns have in fact fired head coach Romeo Crennel.
We all saw this coming. No word on who (if anyone) will hold the press conference at 12 PM today in place of Crennel. The players are available to the media at 11:15 AM today, so expect a few thoughts on the recently departed GM and head coach.
Now, on to finding ample replacements…
(Update: WKNR reports that Savage was in fact fired on Saturday. And that Randy Lerner has already spoken with Bill Cowher, who in fact has also turned us down. On to “Plan B.” Wonderful.)

I don’t understand why it took this long. 0-8 vs. the Steelers, 5-19 in the division. Do the math, Randy.
December 29th, 2008 at 10:22 am
And all we’re left with is speculation on who the replacements are. This is going to be a long off-season.
Lerner is flying Cowher in this week to meet. I’m not even sold on that idea. Within all of this Cowher hysteria, did it somehow get lost that even Cowher was on the hot seat before the ref’s handed him and Bettis their first Super Bowl? Wasn’t there knocks on Cowher not being able to win the big game in his 14yrs there?
I don’t know anymore. I do know that those players would at least respect him or they would have to get out. That would be a nice change of pace…
December 29th, 2008 at 10:23 am
At least the Steelers were playing in big games…
December 29th, 2008 at 10:29 am
Touché.
Sarge – put one of those little dashes over my “E”.
(Edit: Consider yourself dashed)

I love that Google’s adsense attached “Adopt Orphan Needing Love” to this post… Those guys and their sense of humor…
December 29th, 2008 at 10:32 am
Any bets on which player will make the most controversial statement today (when they think that no management authority is in place to shush them)? My money is with Braylon, the guy who Never Met a Mic He Didn’t Like.
December 29th, 2008 at 10:36 am
Mangini was also fired this morning. I do find it rather funny that Pennington went to Miami, then beat the Jets the next season for the division title. I’m really not sure why Mangini took the fall for this, wouldn’t cutting Pennington fall on the GM?
Also, does anyone else think that if they do hire Pioli (sic?), That he would probably want to talk to Mangini about the job?
December 29th, 2008 at 10:40 am
drennen said yesterday on all bets are off that he heard reports that cowher is off the table for the 09 season, but will possibly throw his hat in the ring for 2010. if thats the case then it almost sounds to me like he doesn’t want to be available when the browns are searching… he probably thinks it would simply be easier this way

POP! (opening champaign)
December 29th, 2008 at 11:09 am
I am here at work on Monday in lovley Phoenix, AZ and I am not sure how to feel about all this. I was born and raised in Ohio and have loved the browns my whole life. On one hand I am very happy to see this loser go. Yet, I cant help but feel sorry for him and I am not sure why. We all know he was a “turd with a headset on” and that he sucked beyond belief. So then, why does my heart ache a little bit? Either way, better days are coming…. at least I hope.
December 29th, 2008 at 11:26 am
Pioli and Mangini anyone? would we be happy with that?
for a minute it looked like the Eagles might Fire Andy Reid…if that happened, i would have loved to see him in Cleveland. Now, that seems out of the question.
December 29th, 2008 at 11:42 am
All we need now is a new owner, and maybe we’ll have a chance.
No Mangini, please. And I’m glad Cowher is off the table–while I like the attitude he’d bring to the organization, I’m among those that think he’s overrated.
Here’s to hoping Randolph will make the first good decision of his ownership.

New poll, folks… Figured it could be the potatoes to this steak.
December 29th, 2008 at 11:48 am
2009!!!??? There’s a poll for 2009??? Are u kidding me…2009??? I just hope we can find a coach.

You do know the URL, right?

Well, I’m sitting here at work in DC listening to the talking heads on WTAM and wondering what the future holds. I’m happy that Cowher is out of the picture, and in some part of my delusional mind, I have a feeling that Lerner will right this ship.
The grounds for my delusion is that in just over one season in the English Premiership (yes, I also play and follow the “other football”), his team now sits third in the table and is a title contender this year with hopes of making a major European soccer tournament. This is a team that had its best years 25-30 years ago.
We can only hope for a similar turnaround.

Something interesting I got from Randy.
Did Savage breach his contract with the FU email allowing you not to pay him a chunk of money?
No comment. Asked again. Not going to answer that question.
December 29th, 2008 at 1:05 pm
JJ – you going to be out for the Cavs/Wizards game next week? I’m thinking about going to RFD or Fado and watching the game.
Got tickets for the April game.
December 29th, 2008 at 1:10 pm
Can we fire Braylon Edwards too?
December 29th, 2008 at 1:34 pm
KOOL AID MAN says “OH NO!”
December 29th, 2008 at 1:44 pm
IRB – sadly I have a prior commitment, otherwise I’d be at the game…had the chance to get 2 tix off a coworker.
December 29th, 2008 at 1:48 pm
Too many JJ’s on this board. Since i’m the JJ in Alaska, maybe i should add that to my name. Anyway, plan B. How about we call it plan Billick? For some reason i just don’t see Lerner swinging for the fences anymore. Expect someone like Billick, Fassel, someone who was fired last year still looking for work. I just pray to god Lerner doesn’t talk to anyone in the college ranks! If he does i must admit i could possibly learn to love Brian Kelly from Cinci. Guy managed to put together a winner while using 5 different quarterbacks i think it was. Maybe if we gave him the 5 qbs the Browns currently have, he’d win with them too.
December 29th, 2008 at 1:54 pm
There, i shall be known as JJ from AK
December 29th, 2008 at 2:37 pm
Please Mr. Lerner, do not bring in a guy without prior NFL head coaching experience. This means that Josh McDaniels is not the answer nor is Bob Stoops. And, after living in NYC for the past three years, I can tell you that Mangini can do nothing to help raise the Titanic either.
This team needs a discipline tempered by personality. This team needs a guy who will not have a problem telling Braylon to Shut the F Up and who displays enthusiasm on the sidelines.
I think that Billick fits the bill . . .Thoughts?
December 29th, 2008 at 2:57 pm
If the Browns don’t get a proven Coach (NOT MARTY), I may just have to give up on them all together. Christ knows I won’t become a Steeler fan, but I may start rooting for another team, probably NFC, maybe Detroit…lol.
But seriously, I can’t do “rebuilding” anymore. I can’t keep waiting for next year.
December 29th, 2008 at 3:09 pm
I don’t want any coach who wants GM powers as well. And with news about Parcell’s contract having an opt out clause, and with the rumor he would be interested in coming to Cleveland, I think we need to hold the phone. The sale of the Dolphins should happen in the next two weeks. Lets wait and see if we can get him to be President of football operations first. I wouldn’t mind Pioli either, but plan A HAS to be Parcells. Then let him bring in a coach and coordinators. Look at the amazing turn around of the Fins. Lets just wait and let this play out.
December 29th, 2008 at 3:40 pm
Theres rumor that Parcells will come to cleveland? I would love that, but i thought it was just way wishful thinking on my part. I dont know about Pioli, but if we can get him and Bill, then I think we might have the start of a solid front office…. then we can trust parcells to find a coach.
December 29th, 2008 at 5:03 pm
I wonder if guys like Floyd Reese, Rich McKay, Charlie Casserly, etc. are on the short list for GM as well… these were guys rumored to be in the running back when they hired Savage.
As for a coach, I’m not sad that Cowher is supposedly off the table, honestly. I just want someone who has been a head coach SOMEWHERE before, though I’d prefer someone in the NFL as opposed to a Bob Stoops-type. I’m NOT on the Josh McDaniel wagon (umm, if I had Tom Brady, Welker, and Moss, I think I could be a good OC, too), though I would take a long look at Pioli. I’d be shocked if the Pats let him go, though.
December 29th, 2008 at 5:12 pm
Well Reese has been whoring himself out to any team with a GM position available (profootballtalk.com has been keeping tabs on his begging). Personally I would prefer Pioli (track record)–ideal scenario would have the Wizard of Oz leaving B-more and coming home where he belongs.
As for HC, talk about a kick to the junk: ESPN’s bottom line had the following updates on the situation:

I’m not a Billick fan, unlike some have advocated. I’m also not crazy about Rex Ryan, who has been mentioned a time or two lately. That said, I do want someone with experience, and those two qualify. Just as long as it’s not Herm “We can build on this” Edwards. And no college guys!!
December 29th, 2008 at 5:14 pm
well, let’s try filling in the blanks:
1. “Browns owner Randy Lerner says Bill Cowher not interested in position with the team”
2. “Cowher is willing to listen to offers from other teams”
December 29th, 2008 at 5:15 pm
Look at the amazing turn around of the Fins
They had basically the schedule the Browns did last year with a weaker division. I know they only won one game last year but something to think about.
December 29th, 2008 at 5:17 pm
Grossi said no on Billick. Not sure what he is basing that one, but he said “no chance”.
December 29th, 2008 at 10:26 pm
Oh vey!
