Report: Chris “Beanie” Wells to NFL
January 8, 2009Hey, You! Want to be our General Manager?
January 9, 2009While We’re Waiting aims to be the round-up of the recent WFNY-esque information for your morning viewing. Have something you think we should see? Send it to our tips email in the sidebar.
Can’t say I disagree: “I do not know if [Thom Brennaman] is secretly a gigantic Florida Gators fan. I do not know if Brennaman believes Tebow is the second coming. What I do know is this: Brennaman was so far over the top in his pro-Tebow hyperbole on Thursday that the game became darn-near unwatchable unless the volume was off.” [Chris Burke/FanHouse]
An update on NBA All-Star Voting. Yep, Zydrunas Ilgauskas is still not in the top five. Even with a walking boot, he’s better than Samuel Dalembert. [SLAMOnline]
Remember when I asked if Matt Williams deserves to be in the Hall of Fame and most (if not all) of you said “No.” Well, this guy actually gets to vote, and Williams gets the nod. “He was the inspirational leader of the 2001 World Series champion D’backs.” [Corky Simpson/GVSN via Bugs and Cranks]
“Texas’ win over Ohio State drew a 10.4/21 final rating and 17.1 million viewers on FOX Monday, up 35% and 40% from a 7.7 with 12.2 million for last year’s Fiesta Bowl between West Virginia and Oklahoma. There was no BCS bowl on the comparable date last year. […] The 10.4 rating is the third-highest for a BCS bowl on FOX, behind the last two National Championship games.” [Sports Media Watch]
“Guess what. LeBron is good.” [Hardwood Paroxysm]

Worst HOF argument ever by that guy on Matt Williams. If we’re basing it on his criteria, we need to start deciding which hat David Eckstein’s going to wear when he gets inducted.
In fairness, I was in the car during the Gators’ second TD drive in the third quarter, and Brent Musberger wasn’t much better. “Tebow is just WILLING the Gators to victory!” in the middle of the third quarter. “In the offensive huddle, he just gets that look in his eyes and the whole team turns to him to make a play.” Whatever.
The name on the door is… “Third Round Pick”
I love the Tebow man-crush article! My girlfriend (who could care less about football and wasn’t even watching the game) came in and asked me if the announcer was in love with “that Tebow guy” because all she could hear in the other room was non stop Tebow this and Tebow that. Fox really needs to hire a professional crew to announce these games, it’s getting out of control how crappy they are.
You mean to tell me when an announcer says “When Major Wright hits you, you feel it in a major wrong way” that’s not an AMAZING line? I bet every sports writer and announcer in the country was kicking themselves for not coming up with that line.
At least we have almost a whole year until we have to watch NCAA football on FOX again. Now if only football and baseball weren’t covered by Joe Buck…
Also, Lozo posted a letter to Tim Tebow from Superman this morning. Good stuff, strong language.

I’ve actually jumped on the Tebow bandwagon and don’t mind his coverage – Heisman & TWO titles… He deserves it… and a good guy. I don’t get the dislike of him.
How come when a Oklahoma QB has absurd numbers they are a Heisman candidate, while if a player from someplace else does it – they are often a “system quarterback”.
SAM BRADFORD is a FRAUD. He and his weasily eyebrows can go away.
****** Also – biggest January game in CAVS hisotry TONIGHT? *******
The announcers for all Fox bowl games were atrocious. The Buckeyes game was better when the mute button was pushed.
Just awful.
Also awful, showing the previous play for the 5th time as the current play is starting.
When does Fox’s BCS contract run out? I hope soon.
Every time Joe Buck is mentioned I will ask the question to see if I can find one person.
Is there ANYBODY (and I mean ANYBODY AT ALL) out there who actually likes Joe Buck?
enginerd – Fox only has one more year. The BCS moves to ESPN in 2011.

Seemed so far away when they announced the story, only one more season with FOX, which isn’t too bad.
I don’t like Joe Buck.
thank you. the tebow love-fest was ridiculous.
Tebow is a great college player. I don’t want to hear about how spending 5 minutes with him would change my life. I can bet you it wouldn’t
It would if you were one of DP’s Indonesian friends.
I heard Tebow farted and Angels came out. They proceeded to heal the sick and resurrect the dead. Then they carried Tebow straight to heaven. He decided not stay because he needed a few more days to convince al queda to surrender, and accept the right(Tebow’s) religion.
Fox sucks.
Joe Buck sucks.
Go Cavs.
I really hate the Gators and Tebow. It’s all I hear down here.
OK I usually agree with a lot of things said on here, but many of you hating on Tebow are hating on him for the wrong reason. I know my opinion will be biased, as I currently live in Gainesville, Florida, but I contribute here often and check this site every day as I am a diehard Cavaliers and Browns fan. But hating on Tebow for what Brennaman said about him is ridiculous. Tebow is not going out there ASKING these commentators to praise him like the second coming, he goes out there every day and practices and lives like every other football players. Yes, he is exceptionally good and a magnificent college football player, but hating on him for hard work and dedication and living his life religiously due to his upbringing is ridiculous and pretty uncalled for. I understand that the majority of everyone here is a Buckeyes fan, as this is a Ohio based website and the Buckeyes are huge in Ohio for obvious reasons. But lets respect college football players, and not have their names tarnished due to the overpraise given to them by lovestruck commentators. Tebow is the most down to Earth guy I have ever met and he shrugs off any praise given to him, and this guy completely casts the wrong impression of him. Thom Brennaman was very very very excessive in his comments and I do think that he made Gator fans seem MORE pompous and arrogant. But don’t let his comments tarnish the hard work Tebow has done for himself. I know that I do not speak for the whole population of Gator fans, but we don’t think that Tebow is the best college football player ever. We aren’t idiots, we recognize that there were and are better players out there, more NFL ready players, more talented players out there. So all I’m asking is that there really is no point in criticizing Tebow for comments made by an arrogant commentator on Fox.
Sincerely,
Graham Hall
P.S. GO CAVS KILL THE CELTICS TONIGHT
@Graham,
It really has nothing to do with Tebow himself. It was the slobber job every time Tebow DID HIS JOB. Yes, Tebow executes the game plan to near perfection. Yes, Tebow has a valid claim to the Heisman for his efforts. Yes, I got chills from the press conference following the Ole Miss loss (I wish one player in the NFL, just one, would get up and say something like that AND BACK IT UP ON THE FIELD).
But it was like Brennaman had a contractual obligation to mention how unimaginably awesome Tebow was every eight seconds. The hyperbole after the game was beyond anything I have heard in a very very long time.
No one hates Tebow himself. We hate the media lovefest for him. It’s absolutely ridiculous.
Tebow is definitely one of the best college football players ever. Don’t short change him there.
I can still bet that 5 minutes with him wouldn’t change my life though. I hate announcers that over-glorify everything
Amen, Mac. I don’t know “Superman”, and I don’t know anyone who does know him (though I wish I did, so I could ask if 5 minutes with him really DOES change one’s life for the better–I’m guessing not), but I do know this: I can’t stand hearing talking head after talking head do nothing but praise the s.o.b. for every little thing he does at all times–it’s nauseating. And living here in the Tampa area, as Brett noted earlier, it is significantly worse. Gator fans have always been obnoxious front-runners, but winning has made the insufferable. Personally I thought Tebow’s little “gator chomp” taunt near game’s end was classless–a punk move by a team that showed itself to be full of punk kids last night (they were doing cheap garbage like that all night, with nary a flag to be seen). But he gets a pass because of his “second coming” image. The worst part is the overexposure makes what may well be genuine humility come off as calculated and superficial. The end result is I root against him any and every chance I get, and I hope he washes out of the NFL like nearly every other gator QB before him.
@ Graham – I get what you’re saying. I’m a Buckeyes fan through and through, and I love Tebow. Beside being an outstanding talent to watch, I love what he stands for and the fact that he is so careful with using his public image to advance interests he believes in.
But I agree with draftnik and MacNip… the media love-fest is rather sickening to behold (Tebow might agree.) Don’t mistake the disgust you see here as being directed at Tebow, I think most do in fact respect his talent and his character.
That said, I was *so* rooting for Oklahoma last night…
I have talked with Tebow for 5 minutes, and honestly my life was not changed. I told you I disagreed with the majority of Brennamans statements, and this “Superman” thing is again the MEDIA, and not Tebows expression/
Ok @ B-bo. Your generalization of Gator fans is pretty obnoxious. Sure, they are happy to be winning, and I’m sure that they may rub it in people’s faces once in awhile that we won 2 of the last 3 championships. “obnoxious front-runners, but winning has made the insufferable. Personally I thought Tebow’s little “gator chomp” taunt near game’s end was classless–a punk move by a team that showed itself to be full of punk kids last night (they were doing cheap garbage like that all night, with nary a flag to be seen).”
front runners? we weren’t rated number 1 all season, so I don’t know where you get that from. we came into the game as a #2 seed in the BCS, with the numbers favoring OU. Yes, I know that the Vegas line favored UF and 68% of the country or something like that thought Florida would win bu that doesn’t make them front runners. Classless gator chomp? I’ll show you classless. Remember the play where #5 Chris Harris deliberately attempted to hurt Harvin’s already injured ankle AFTER the whistle. Harvin was lying on the ground and Harris yanked his feet up in the air after Harvins run. Now doing a Gator chomp was in true an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty, attempting to deliberately re-injure a player is just IMMORAL. We could argue back and forth all day about what was wrong with the game, but emotions rage and Tebow made the wrong choice in getting a 15 yard penalty.
Another problem I have is with your “punk” statement. You pretend like you know all the Gator players. All you see is there image on the football field, not what they are doing off it. You see a hard hitting athletic team and you think punks? I’m sorry but I dont see that at all. If playing physically in a game deems you the term “punks” then I feel bad for all the other “punks” who work hard in the game. I understand that OSU and UF have a mini rivalry after the national championships in 2006, but when you start attacking the players with false claims then it becomes more then a rivalry. It’s just a slugfest then.
Graham Hall
meant Nic Harris, not Chris Harris
I really am no that into college football so I am pretty indifferent about the Gators OSU whatever crap but it definately seemed to me like last night after nearly every play gator players were doing the run and jump shoulder bump you see LeBron and Mo doing after something like a clutch 3 or some other game changing moment, it seems a little excessive after a tackle in which the RB gained only 2 or 3. Not that it’s just Florida, like draftnik said, it’s their JOB. The over celebration is getting crazy in football in general. That or I need to start doing some more chest bumps and victory dances after I complete a meeting, send an email, or make an unbelievable copy on the xerox machine.
I thought Shaq Diesel was superman.
@Tron – I reserve chest bumps for good powerpoints and the breakthrough. Sent emails, meetings, etc. get three low fives followed by the cross armed-pose, held for five seconds.
@ Craig regarding the Joe Buck thing:
I may have already told this story, but…I was taking a piss in CANADA at a rest-stop. Looking up at the wall I notice some graffiti just about eye level. Examining it closer, what does it say?
JOE BUCK SUCKS
True story.
Wow, Graham, where to begin….
I have lived in the Tampa area for five years. When I first got here, the only time you heard from gator fans was during football season, and only when they were about to play FSU. Suddenly they experience success, and everyone and their brother is a fan, an alum, went there for a semester, whatever. So, yes, frontrunner seems an appropriate label–I wasn’t simply speaking about THIS season.
The gator chomp thing by “Superman” (yeah, that’s all announcer-driven, right) WAS classless, regardless of who you might root for. Would I classify Harris’ action the same way? Absolutely. But, as Tron points out well in his post, the gator team–even the scrubs on the sidelines when the action reached that area–spent the night standing over guys they tackled and celebrating routine tackles like Shawn Merriman on speed. I’m all for energy and competitive fire, but not when you show up your opponent. In particular, I was disgusted by the display of gator “sportsmanship” on what should have been flagged as an illegal hit by Major Wright in the first quarter. He launches his helmet into the chest/chin of a defenseless receiver, then proceeds to (along with numerous teammates on the sideline) stand over the player he hit (who was clearly shaken up, and with good reason) and start “jawing”. In the NFL, Wright is sending a check for 50-75 large to the commish’s office for something that bush league. Was Harris’ move wrong? Absolutely. But after seeing garbage like that all game, a person is bound to reach their limit. Doesn’t mean he was right to do it, but I understand why he might have. So do I know all the players? No, and frankly I never claimed I did, and I’d bet you don’t either. All I can judge on is what I see of them on the field, and what I’ve saw last night is what I saw throughout much of the season: punks.
You are right about one thing: this is a debate we could have endlessly, because we just plain don’t agree. I’m sure I’m not going to convince you, as an obvious gator fan, that they can do any wrong–so I won’t try. My point is made, and I’m done.
those all star numbers are rediculous…. cmon fans!! AI over devin harris? tmac over cp3? dalembert? yi?
awful
Alright B-Bo, i will address your last thing only, as this is going nowhere. “I’m sure I’m not going to convince you, as an obvious gator fan, that they can do any wrong–so I won’t try”. this quote. I already said that Tebow should not have done the Gator chomp at the end, and i have called Brennamans comments very very very excessive, so what more do you want me to say? I know that the Gators did things wrong, but the emotions displayed in one national championship game do not reflect our portrayal of the whole season.
Fox coverage sucked the whole BCS. The sound was awful as well. How about Brennaman just before half when OK had first and goal at the 10 and he kept saying the wrong down. When stopped on third down he made the big call that they turned the ball over….Pay attention to the game!
I didn’t read a word of this article Sarge but you are so going to hell for putting Tebow and Erin Andrews next to each other.
Fortunately I was in Mexico for the OSU and Florida games, so all I heard was spanish. Even though the outcomes weren’t what I wanted, those games beat watching them w/ the terrible announcers we get in the states. I could just imagine what they were saying about Tebow.
